Hi Madeleine, The John Prentice in the article appears in the 1851 census as an 17 year old apprentice joiner. The family resided in Columshill Place and would appear that they arrived in Rothesay between 1836 and 1838 judging on the birthplaces of his younger siblings. His older brother David went to Australia in 1852 with my g-grandfather Arch. McKinlay. They were mining together for some time. Bill

Hello everyone, When the Marquess of Bute celebrated his 21st birthday in 1868, the occasion was also marked by a group of Bute exiles in Wombat Hill, Daleysford, Australia. The event was reported in The Buteman of February 6 1869 and the account highlights the affection the exiles felt for the island and also their loyalty to the Marquess and his family. I wonder if there were similar events elsewhere? In the hope that it is of general interest, I'll try to summarise the Buteman report - headlined "Celebration of the coming of age of the Marquess of Bute by the natives of Bute in Australia". Square brackets are The Buteman's, obviously inserted to help identify the people mentioned. If anyone recognises any of these people, I'd be very grateful for any information. Anyway, here goes (first few pars verbatim to try to give flavour of The Buteman report): "A meeting of the natives of Bute was held on 12th September at the large store of Mr William SPELLACY, situated on Wombat Hill, Daleysford, to celebrate the coming of age of the Marquess of Bute. Mr FLEMING MILLER [late foreman with Messrs M'Neil and Lockie here] presided and was supported by a large company of Butemen. "The chairman, after the usual loyal and patriotic toasts, said, 'We have met here this evening to celebrate the one great event we have looked forward to before and ever since we left our island home - the coming of age of John Crichton Stuart, Marquess of Bute, Earl of Dumfries, Baron Cardiff etc etc' (great cheering). "'I am sure there is not one present who cannot look back with feelings of fond and dear remembrance of that "beautiful Isle of the Sea" justly named the Montpelier of Scotland. With regard to the Marquess of Bute, if he sustains the reputation which we hear he bears in the old country, he will be a worth successor to his illustrious father, who was a model landlord and philanthropist and a Christian and who abounded in deed of charity. I beg to propose the health of the most noble Marquess of Bute.' "The toast was drunk with great enthusiasm and with highland honours." The report continues "the oldest Brandane in Daleysford" Archibald McKIRDY sen [late builder Rothesay] responded in a brief but pithy speech." He praised the young marquess and his late father and mother, adding that he was "very proud to see that the natives had not forgotten the ancient House of Mountstuart, although sixteen thousand miles away and to see also the enthusiasm with which they had responded to the toast 'the Marquess of Bute' (loud applause)." John JAMIESON of Mountstuart Farm, Franklingford [late tenant of Scalpsie Farm, Bute] proposed the health of the Provost, Magistrates, and Councillors of the Royal Burgh of Rothesay. "In proposing this toast he specially referred to the Provost, Mr MACBETH, than whom no abler could preside over Rothesay (tremendous cheering)". Daniel CURRIE of Ardbeg Farm, Bullarook, described as late tenant of Craigberroch and brother of the present tenant of Ardbeg Farm, Bute, replied. He said he was sure he could say with safety that no city or town in Scotland could boast a more intelligent and upright body of rulers that Rothesay (Hear, hear and cheers). John ANGUS of Smeaton [eldest son of the late Mr Neil Angus, spinning master, Rothesay Cotton Works] proposed the next toast "The Prosperity of the Nation" and "in a humorous speech gave a few reminiscences of Rothesay in days gone by; how Victoria Street had been reclaimed from the sea, how little thatch houses had given way to large three-storeyed dwellings; how the herring trade had gone down and been replaced by large busy cotton factories. He also referred to the great change that had come over the people and the clergy of Rothesay since the days of the Rev Dr McLEA. He had been told that time was when if people walked the shore of a Sunday they had to 'staun the session' or of the Doctor heard of anyone being out after 11 o'clock they were sure to be hauled 'over the coals' and above all things the Doctor was said to be such an enemy of the Irish that he would not allow one of them to come to Rothesay if he could help it (laughter and cheers). All this had now changed and that for the better and he hoped the 'Nation' would continue to prosper." William SPELLACY proposed "The Old Folks at Home" . Archd McKIRDY jun [late tinsmith Rothesay] next proposed "Our old companions". Then there was singing of the old songs of Scotland and recitations by John PRENTICE [son of the late Mr Archd Prentice, manager cotton works, Rothesay, and late joiner here] James HUNTER [son of the late Mr Robert Hunter, heritor, Rothesay] Messrs R and A RANKIN and others. After votes of thanks were given to Mr Spellacy for the excellent manner in which they had been entertained and to Mr Fleming Miller for presiding, the proceedings were brought to a close by three tremendous cheers for the Marquess of Bute and the whole company singing with the utmost enthusiasm "Auld Langsyne". He sailed from Campbelltown, Argyll, on the ship Annabella in 1770, and settled on Prince Edward Island, Canada. He was married to Rachel Galbraith (1736 - 1838) some time before 1770 and they had at least eight children; Neil, Donald, Janet, Malcolm, Hugh, Lauchlin, Penelope, and Duncan. All of these except Neil grew up, married, and died in PEI or New Brunswick. I have no idea who Lauchlin's or Rachel's parents were, when or where they were born/ married, or even where they were living (Argyll? Bute? other?) before emigrating to PEI, but would love to find out. Any help would be much apprieciated.

There seems to have been a steady exodus from quite early on.Gt- gt -grandfather Archibald William MACFIE's occupation is listed as Cotton Spinner, address Rothesay, on his wedding certificate,1836. He and his family left Bute sometime between 1846 when his son Charles was born in Rothesay and 1849 when my gt grandfather Daniel was born in Hamilton, Lanark. On Daniel's wedding certificate (1875) his father's occupation is listed as "Clerk" (but this may well be Cotton Clerk, something not quite as secretarial, I believe). I don't think he was a trailblazer, as the Bute strays info in the censuses (censi?) indicates. Do you think it was the age old story of better wages on the mainland? Better housing might have been a draw(Archibald's address was given as Cotton Mill - and I believe whole families worked in the mills, even the children)? Maybe there were better schools on the mainland - Archibald's son became a headmaster in Govan. Or perhaps it was the aftermath of the religious troubles of the early 1840s, about which Madeleine is much better informed than I am... atb Jennie

Hello All, I wonder if anyone on the list might have data in their personal collections/books of Arran history that would make mention of any information regarding the careers and/or families/decendants of any of the following three men. Any help would be very much appreciated. Captain Neil McKELVIE, bc 9 Dec.1830 Kilmory/Shiskine, s/o William McKELVIE and Mary CURRIE. Neil McKELVIE died sometime aft.1866 and bef.1881, possibly in Calcutta, India during a voyage. I am given to understand that he "captained" for "City Line" owned by Smith and Sons of Glasgow whose ships traded between Glasgow and Calcutta. Donald McKELVIE, O.B.E., horticulturist, creator of the "Arran Potato" plant strain, b 24 Feb.1867 Lamlash, Arran, s/o the above Capt. Neil McKELVIE and his wife Mary Miller McNEISH. I understand that Donald McKELVIE d 1947 but I'm not sure exactly where nor whether he married and left children, grandchildren etc. James KAY, R.A.S., artist, a landscape donated by him hung at one time in the church/community centre in Lamlash, b 22 Oct.1852 Lamlash, Arran, s/o Thomas KAY (Royal Navy) and Violet McNEISH. James evidently d 1942 but I don't know where. I understand that James KAY married c1911, an Ada LAVAL, whose father was a doctor in Mauritius. (nothing more known by me about her) I am told by the kind gentleman who forwarded this information to me that James KAY and Ada LAVAL had a daughter Violet McNeish KAY b1914, dc 1971 who was evidently also an artist. Betty asked about ths fire a few weeks ago. It seems that four men and three women died in the fire in a barn in which they were sleeping at Ardnahoe. The Buteman of Saturday July 9 1887 carries a report "Terrible Disaster at Ardnahoe Farm. Seven Persons Burned to Death" They had come to the farm (where the tenant was Mrs MARTIN, helped by her grown-up son) for the potato harvest. The field of potatoes had been sold as it stood to Mr CHALMERS, a potato merchant in Greenock, who was to have them lifted at his own expense. For this purpose he sent down the four men and three women who had only arrived on the Thursday evening (the fire happened in the early hours of Friday). At the time of The Buteman report, no-one knew the names of the dead, as Mr Chalmers had not been contacted. Two other workers, who had been at the farm for six weeks, escaped the blaze. They were William DOCHERTY and John FRAILL - both from Rathamullin, Ireland. Other names mentioned in the report are Mrs YOUNG (wife of Captain Young of the 6th Lanark RV), who was residing at Ardnahoe with her family for the summer months, and her father-in-law Mr Young of Hannah and Young, cabinet makers, Glasgow as well as local insurance agent Mr A M BURNIE. It was said to be the first fatal accident from fire in Bute within living memory. I cannot give exact dates when cotton milling started in Rothesay except that it was after 1779 according to Blane (1778 according to the Statistical Accounts) when some of Arkwrights patents on some mill machinery expired however it certainly was not long after that. Around that date James Kenyon of Sheffield tried to establish a business on the Earl of Hometown's Annandale estate but could not establish long term leases. Robert Oliphant of Rossie, Postmaster general of Scotland who was concerned with the Earl of Bute's estate pointed them in the direction of Rothesay. An old Flax mill was converted initially until larger premises were built. It was the first cotton mill in Scotland and tradesmen went from there to Glasgow to extent the trade. A steam engine was installed in 1800 so presumably water power was used prior to that date. Again according to the Statistical Accounts for Rothesay in 1791 there were about 300 employed while in 1845 there were 355 in the spinning mill and a further 85 at the power loom factory. As regards the end of the cotton industry in Rothesay, The Island of Bute by Ian S Munro says: "The boom continued until well past the middle of the century, and although by 1860 the peak had been reached and the decline had set in, there was no sudden recession. As late as 1872 records show that over 200 people were employed in the weaving mill of A & J McKirdy, while the Broad Croft Spinning and Weaving Mills had over 400 employees, making a total of well over 600 still working in the industry. "Yet only ten years later the peak of the five mills had been reduced to one and it could be said that by 1882 the cotton industry in Bute was virtually extinguished." Reasons given for the decline include the fact that the introduction of steam power necessitated the use of heavy machinery unsuited to the Bute building. Geographical factors and changing patterns of transport and distribution were also blamed. Munro adds, "As the local cotton industry declined, there was a movement of workers away to other mills, mainly in Lanarkshire, a significant factor in the island's declining population." Hi all, I understand that the OPR's were handed over to the LDS and that the familysearch.org website allows one to search these indexes. I have a couple of questions. 1) Are these indexes exactly the same or were they indexed by different people? i.e. if there is a mistake in transcription will it be repeated on both indexes? 2) Is there a searchable index of the 1855 census available. My experience of searching LDS and GRO online is that LDS' records appear occasionally to have been transcribed by bored teenagers who couldn't care less about genealogy on a hot Friday afternoon. For example, Joe BLOGGS, Earl of EPPING might be entered as Joe EPPING. Lots of typos, too. GRO has more detail, and seems to more accurate. With copies of OPR entries from GRO in my hand, I have searched the LDS site and not found the relevant entries, though using all kinds of searching strategies. RH staff reckon that their index is complete. Their computer is very picky about spelling. Your question about mistakes in transcription being repeated has made me think. Somewhere I have a McMurdo birth/marriage where the wife's name is totally mistranscribed by the family search index. It started in 1841 and was taken every ten years. The 1851 is widely indexed .......usually held in local libraries...... some published. The only easily accessed census is 1881 which the LDS sells on a set of cd roms. 1891 index is available on line at Scots Origins Irene
