Barbara I don't have much to help you, but I have a Jennie FYFE in Bute who married Archie MALCOM, a joiner and ship's carpenter. Archie was born on 13 April 1890 in Port Bannatyne, North Bute, a few miles up the road from Rothesay and I think he went on to own a boatyard. Based on Archie's age, Jennie was probably born in the early 1890s. Do you think there may be a connection with your FYFEs here? Hi All The Buteshire Strays in Lanarkshire will start tomorrow, there are eleven parts. The number of strays on the Highland Scotland CD, has been cut by two thirds, the 2000+ households in Rothesay ED 558 were accidentally included in my original estimate. The revised number of households with Buteshire Strays for the region is around the 1000 mark. With a bit of luck, that is subject to next paragraph, these should be processed in time to follow on from the Lanarkshire ones. Please note that due to my work commitments over the next two or three weeks, replies to requests will be processed when I can. The current backlog has been cleared this morning (GMT +8). There's a hoax virus warning going about, which may have repercussions if you use Windows, but only if you follow the instructions contained in the message. It starts: "Received the following from a friend. Please follow the directions to find and delete the file. I did find this virus on my hard drive. I have received this e-mail and have found the virus on three computers! Virus software can not detect it. It will not become active until {{gives a date in the near future}}, at that point it will become active and will be too late. It wipes out all files and folders on the hard drive. This virus travels through e-mail and migrates to the C:\windows\command folder. My grandfather John Fyfe emigrated to Niagara-on-the Lake,Ontario, Canada in 1906. His father was John Fyfe born in 1831. He had a business called the Red Shed in Rothesay with his brothers James and Thomas. When the Red Shed was torn down John and James went to Ardmaleish and established a boatyard. The Fyfe's were of the Baptist faith. This would be 1850's to 1900's. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Barbara

Welcome back to Bob Baxter who has rejoined after loosing contact due to his ISP being taken over. I hope you have caught up via the list archives. ****** ****** ****** Mention was made during the week of the Cotton Mills on Bute. While doing the 1881 Strays extractions, I noted and am still noting that a fairly high percentage of the Rothesay strays entries are for one or more children in the middle of a family born to Cotton Mill workers who had first moved to Rothesay from either Ireland or Argyll, and then moved on again by 1881. +++++ +++++ +++++ I have been asked what is a 'Bute Stray' ? The generic answer is that a stray in genealogy / family history is anyone who is found living somewhere that is not their place of birth. The specific area of birth is defined by the title of the strays list, thus a 'Buteshire Stray' is someone who is identified as being born in the shire of Bute, but shown in a document to be living elsewhere. The main source for 19C strays is the ten yearly census as in the case of my postings, but there are other sources - Marriage and Death certificates will sometimes accurately show place of birth, Wills occasionally, Settlement Bonds, family letters, newspaper reports and/or notices, etc. I am sure other list members can come up with more sources for strays. +++++ +++++ +++++ I have also been asked what is 'in' and what is 'out' as far as the 'strays' lists go ... Basically I have assumed that the place of birth is more likely to be correct than the county of birth, so for example, birthplaces of Rothesay Argyll or Millport Ayr will lead to the person being listed as a Bute stray, while birthplaces of Tighnabrunaich Bute or Cowal Bute will not. Where I have found a place I can't identify either in or outside Buteshire, but it includes Bute in the birth place, then I have erred on the side of caution and left it in. There are exceptions (aren't there always) : Kyles of Bute was a hard one, and has currently been left out as the bulk of the settlements shown on the old 19c maps are on the north side of the water. Could be extracted and listed separately if there are sufficient requests. Entries showing a birthplace of Kilmorie (or any of it many variants) alone are not included, as they could be either Bute (Arran) or Argyll. Again could be extracted separately if sufficient requests. +++++ +++++ +++++ Update: the Lanark part of the extraction is up to 1900+ entries, and counting. However, I have a tight schedule next week which may include some shift work, so the Lanark A's may not follow directly on from the Lowlands Z's section.
