i am looking for the names of hugh w. mccurdy's parents. he is from lanarkshire, scotland. came to the usa at age 8. born 1827 and died in michigan in 19??.michigan library says he did not come with his parents. he lived in corunna, mich and they always thought his parents came with him. any help would be greatly appreciated. marie

I have a recollection that marriage by license was often by reason of haste. Or when the marriage might be considered to be within the forbidden degrees - which at some periods included marrying a first cousin. Jennie

Hi Mary. The definition I have on this subject is as follows. "A Service as Heir in Scotland carries a right to real property NOT disposed of by Settlement or Will in the Scotch form." It seems that the majority of our ancestors did not make wills and property etc. was simply passed down through the generations until the need arose to prove a right to property. I found one entry in 1847 (not in Buteshire) where a person was served as heir to his twelve times great great-grandfather. A service as heir consisted of a decree of a judge, who was either a Sheriff of Chancery or the Sheriff of the County as the result of a brieve, issued from Chancery, which gave instructions for assembling a jury to ascertain the truth of a claimants asserted rights as heir. As far as I can determine there were slightly different forms of the procedure pre 1700, between 1700 and 1847, and thereafter. I hasten to stress that my knowledge of Scottish Law is somewhat on a par with my knowledge of quantum physics but I strongly suspect that there were just about as many reasons for requiring "Services" as there were claimants. Their value to us of course as genealogists, if we are lucky, is to be able to establish a few more family relationships. Hope this helps more than it confuses. If any of you have been having difficulty with the 'Ellis Island' Internet site the following 'standard' reply may be of interest. For those of you who are not aware of the site, the message includes details of what is available, and what is not (or at least not yet) ... Grosse Ile was the quarantine station for vessels approaching Quebec City in the 19th century. Christina H. McALLISTER was born on Bute about 1809. In 1840 she emigrated to Sydney, Australia with her husband, James WILSON, and their son James aboard the ship "Joseph Cunard".
