Hi all, Apologies to those who this does not affect, but I have seen a quite a few messages about emails to Australia lately. The problem is that bigpond.com (or BIGPONG as it is commonly known) has been going up and down like a yo yo lately, with no end to the problems in sight. Since about 80% of Aussie traffic goes through telstra (read bigpond) this is causing all sort of problems. So if your are sending to a bigpond address or any aussie address for that matter, which you are sure is valid, you may experience problems. Keep trying and the email will eventually get through !! This must be a nightmare for all of the list administrators. We have a Thos. THOMSON (without the P) married Sophia Mcnicoll born 20 Aug 1846,Glenisla Angus Scot. Father John Mcnicoll & Elisabeth Stewart (both names spelled differently.) Sophia is sister to Clemintina Stewart Mcn.who married Joseph Hogg in Edinburgh and was present at birth of Margaret Clementina Hogg, my husband's grandmother. Margaret married a Ritchie and came to the states in early 1900's. We have been trying to trace the Ritchies, Hoggs and Mcnicolls and why I have this info on Sophia. I,m not sure this is any connection to your Thompson with the "P" but do know spellings change.
Lynn, Many thanks for posting the 1861 census extracts. There are a couple of people I recognise, including Gilbert CURRIE and his wife Effie at Gatehouse. In case it helps someone else, the place in Argyllshire that you had difficulty in reading is Skipness, in the Kintyre peninsula. I have the entry for Gilbert and his family in the 1851 census, but not this one, so I'm very grateful. Gilbert might be related to my great-great-grandmother Flora CURRIE (married Archibald HILL), Regards Madeleine

Hi everyone, My name is Cath and I am here in Australia trying to find my scottish relatives. My mum was orphaned young so I don't have too much to go on. My Grandmother Agnes SMITH married Andrew NICOLSON in 1919 and they lived at Rothesay. I think she worked at a hotel called the BellTrees for a Miss Campbell. Agnes died in about 1944 and my mum, Margaret went to an orphanage in Glasgow. There was a brother named David NICOLSON who may have been adopted by Miss Campbell and a sister named Isabell (not sure what happened to her). Andrew Nicolson went back to Glasgow after Agnes died and we think he died soon after. I am trying to obtain certificates but I think Agnes may have changed her name at some stage or met someone else and used their name. Any help would be appreciated and I would love to hear from anyone with any connections. Cath Shelton
I came across your message re Bannatynes and wonder if you could perhaps help me. My ancestor was Ninian Stewart, Fisheries Officer who servied in Orkney and Shetland, living in Grobsness, Shetland from about 1828 until his death in 1837/38. He married Elisabeth Scott Adie of Delting, Shetland and had a son Robert born in 1832. Previously he had a child to a Betsey Morrison (I think this child was called Ninian and reared by a family James Nicholson also of Grobsness). He also had a son George born to (just forgotten at the moment) in St.margaret's Hope Sth. Ronaldsay Orkney. One of the godfathers (?) was James Bannatyne. I researched all of the Ninian Stewarts in Scotland and found most of them born in Bute. The one I think to be the most suitable is Ninian Stewart born 27.3.1795 to Robert Stewart and Elizabeth Bannantyne. at Rothesay in 'Bute. They were married at Bute on 5.6.1794. The only way I can prove whether or not he is my ancestor is to eliminate him w! hen others claim him. Have you come across him. All the best, Doris.
I have always been told that my great great Grandfather was a close friend of the Duke of Hamilton. In the 1840's my Francis TOWNLEY lost his wife (Sophia, daughter of Sir William Knightly) and 2 children through disease in England. Apparently he was asked by his friend the Duke to join him in Scotland. Francis apparently then went to live in Scotland with his only remaining child, William TOWNLEY. We have a photo of William wearing a kilt, also a signed document giving William his commission into the army in 1857 by the Duke of Hamilton. He became ensign in the second regiment of the Royal Lanarkshire Militia. Anyway eventually William married and went to live in Australia from which his life was very well documented. Luckily for me. I now have a death certificate for Francis TOWNLEY in 1859. It says died in Brodick and was buried in Kilbride church yard. Does anybody know if there is an index or somebody I could write to about finding his grave. I'm hoping that he has a headstone which is still readable. Even though I'm pretty sure this man is my ancestor I still have no actual proof as his death cert. doesn't tell me that much. His occupation states that he was a land steward when he died as the age of 66. Also where does one write to enquiring about the possibiltiy of a will? Any ideas greatly appreciated. As previously advised, gatewayed posts still do not carry the old GenConnect style information, which clearly identified posts from the board, and gave a direct link for posting a reply. Until this facility is again available (don't hold your breath) clues to identify gatewayed messages are:- 1 currently all board posts appear with an e-mail address x@y not a name. 2 where the board post is a response to an earlier message, there will be no trace of the earlier message (the recent messages "Re: McDougall, McKechnie" are examples). 3 if you have access to the message header - the presence of 'gc-gateway' about two thirds of the way down, confirms the message is from the board. ****** ****** ****** Useful site originally posted to the Lanark list ... What a shame, but thanks for replying so promptly. There was a James McDougall--son of John, tenant farmer in 'Craigmore' (a farming area in Rothesay)--who married Mary Lamont. I am trying to find if he is my Alexander Snr's brother, as he too was noted as son of John, tenant farmer in 'Craigmore'. Also Alexander Snr's daughter, Joan Macpherson McDougall, married Duncan McDougall, from North Bute. Does any of this ring a bell?? Regards Jeanette.
Hi - Sorry to say that none of these names are familiar at all. I think it must be a different McDougall family. Good luck in your search.
Hi!! My great great grandparents were Alexander McDougall & Catherine McCallum, who were married in Rothesay, Bute, on 6th January, 1831. They had children Catherine 1(1831), Susanna (1833), John (1836), Joan McPherson (1837-my g gran), Mary (1839), Catherine 2 (1841) & Alexander JNR (1845). Joan, Catherine 2, & Alexander migrated to Australia in the late 1800s. Does any of this sound familiar to you?? Would love to hear from any folk also researching this family. Regards Jeanette.

How do I find out about the Argyll and Bute District Asylum. I am interested in someone who was an inmate and recorded in the 1881 census. Jennie
Hello everyone Just re-listing my Bute interests in case anyone has any knowledge of them or possible connections. Christina H. McALLISTER was born on Bute about 1809. In 1840 she emigrated to Sydney, Australia with her husband, James WILSON, and their son James aboard the ship "Joseph Cunard". The family may have been living in Greenoch before they left. The IGI has a Christina McALISTER being born at Cumun (?), Bute in 1811. Relative: Mary Florence BRIGHT STOCKS. This may not be my Christina of course, but I need to check it out. Does anyone know of a place called Cumun as I can't find it on any maps? Are there any BRIGHT STOCKS out there who have McALISTERs in their tree? Regards -- Ian Jones Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Here's the introduction to that site, which shows that it contains more than just the page images of the individual parishes:- "Welcome to the online version of 'The Statistical Accounts of Scotland' The page images and text of the first and second Statistical Accounts are held in a database which has five main areas each of which is represented on screen by a 'tab'. To switch between the areas simply click on the tab of choice on the tab control above. Table of contents A list of general articles which refer to all or part of Scotland. Subjects include canals, education, population and rents. General Index Indexes reproduced from the original volumes. County Level A list of material which refers to individual counties of Scotland. In the first Account there are only two maps while the second has indexes, maps and reports for almost every county. Parish List Detailed reports by ministers of the Kirk on the 938 parishes of Scotland arranged alphabetically by County and Parish. Search A tool developed to improve searching of the complete text for keywords or groups of words. The lists of "hits" is usually much longer than after searching the original county or General Index.
