I think you have no option but to look at the original entry of the 1851 census (see the film at your nearest LDS family history centre) and discover where all five were born. 3. Good morning, A Mystery that we've been trying to solve for the past 20 years. My gggrandfather was a Thomas Stuart - his family Bible says that he was born 12 Jan 1827. His death cert. says Rothesay, Bute. Parents unknown. He was in Australia by Oct 1855, when he married. Obit says that he was in the 'Navy' as a young man. Somehow he is connected to the Peacock family from the previous message. With a name like Stuart, it makes our search very hard. Couldn't find him on the 1841 Census, but I'm redoing this when the film comes in as last looked 15 yrs ago. Our only clues: 1. He was in the Navy sometime between 1837-1855 Merchant or Royal ? ? ? 2. His birth date being 12 Jan 1827 3. Rothesay, Bute - born there or spent time as a child ? We have exhausted the Oz records & reles. Any suggestions? Bonnie Bean QLD - Australia yvonneb@bit.net.au

Ooooppppss :( My mistake it is 1853 ! By searching on the website, your # refers to a set of 36 Films, whereas the other number refers to a single film and refers to post 1855 events. The changeover point is 1855. The website allows one to view all the sets or records in the set of films and find the appropriate film numbers. So i have narrowed it down to Film # 1042941 Baptisms for 1846-1854 Church of Scotland, Glasgow. > >For 1834 births the books gives 1830-34 as 102919 and 1834 - 40 102920 Interestingly, both of these numbers bring me back to the same set of 36 films and then by clicking "View Film Notes" one can peruse the contents of all the rolls in the set and select the appropriate one. > >I don't understand why you need a batch number. Only if you are trying to search the index on the website. >Here in UK we order the film >and then sit and look through it for the entry. Yes that's what I intend to do... Well this gets more interesting by the minute !! Using Annes method comes up with film #6035516, which apparently has a date range of 1855-1871 or thereabouts and my birth is in 1834 !! There are quite a few other FARMERS in this batch however. The film # that Irene gave me from the Book is 102923, this is apparently is Old parochial registers, 1612-1854 Church of Scotland (Glasgow). I can't search on this film number without a batch number, so I don't know if any FARMERS are on it, but I suspect that they are. So there is a date difference between the LDS & the GRO by the look of it. The other interesting thing is that I cannot find this 1834 birth on the IGI at all. Thanks for all your help... 3. Dear Steve There are a lot of discrepancies between the IGI and GRO - less than half my direct line ancestors show up on IGI. Often just one of a generation is there while the rest for some reason aren't , although they are clearly listed in the OPRs. The time to worry, perhaps, is if your ancestors show up on IGI and don't in the OPRs.... Jennie Macfie

    1. Scots GRO, OPR numbers to LDS Films
    2. Steve Farmer
    3. Hi All, I have had difficulty getting an answer to this question so I have posted this to 3 lists ! I have found some entires on the Scots GRO which are OPR entries. They have "FR" references which are described by the GRO FAQ page as ... "These are references to the microfilm created by the LDS Church from the original OPR registers, and appear in the top right corner of the microfilm frames." In addition the Code on the GRO index are supposed to point one to the appropriate LDS film... to quote the GRO FAQ again.... "OPR Codes Code 1: = parish code This is equivalent to the Parish Name shown in the index record Code 2: = parish suffix Not always present. An additional index term for locating the relevant register. Code 3: = film number The identifier of the microfilm roll containing the relevant register images. " I have a few entries for which I would like to get the LDS film, for example... OPR, Birth, Male, 21 Oct 1853, FARMER William, Father = William FARMER, Mother =Christina DUNN, District = GLASGOW, OPR County =, Misc = FR6455, GRO_CODE_1 = 644, GRO_CODE_2 = 1, GRO_CODE_3 = 39* (Their asterisk, I don't know what it means), GRO_CODE_4 = 18" Can anyone help me with how to find what LDS film i need to order to see these OPR entries? I'm stuck I must admit !! Hi Steve I think there is a website somewhere to check films numbers. The FR frame number is not relevant until you actually have the film...... it is brilliant when you have a film of an old OPR with illegible handwriting ..... then you only have to decipher one frame. But you shouldn't have that problem in 1853. 644/1 is the GRO reference number for Glasgow. Perhaps the other numbers are on the film and help you to find the right part. I have a book called 'Key to the Parochial Registers of Scotland' by V Ben Bloxham which says under Glasgow (644-1) Lanarkshire Births 1850-54 102923 I think this last number is the number of the LDS film you should order but you should be able to check when you go to your nearest LDS centre.
