    1. New to list
    2. Hello listers, I am new to this list and would like to introduce myself and my ancestral family. My name is Dawn, and I live in sunny California, USA. My maiden name was PARK, and it is my great-great-grandfather Magnus PARK who lived in Rothsay, Bute. He was not born there, but was born in the Shetland Islands, away up at the tippy top! Magnus PARK age 68, his third wife Elizabeth Calder, and his step son Samuel lived at 9 Argyll Street, Rothsay according to the 1881 census records. By then he was a retired "river pilot", as well as a retired sea captain for several years. I have no idea how long he'd lived there, as I know he was living in Glasgow on the1861 census. He sure must have loved being on the water, and/or living beside it, for I know his home in Glasgow was on Clyde Place, Govan, right on the River Clyde, and in 1881, again, right by the water on Argyll Street in Rothesay. Can anyone give me an idea of what type of homes were on Argyll St and what life there was like in 1875? A cousin once told me that "old" Magnus, (as I like to call him) had built himself a big fancy home on the river. Can someone give me the names of any cemeteries there, and are there any indexes to look at? I feel sure that he must have died there. Any websites which will give me a picture of life there? Thanks for any insights to life in Rothesay you can give me! Dawn.

    3. Ian Sorry for the delayed reaction - I have been away from home for two days. Nice coincidence! My great great grandfather, Peter TAYLOR, was at 72 Montague Street at the time of the 1861 census, with three of his daughters, Ann, Joanna and Isabella. (His wife Julia (MS ORR) was NOT there on that day, though still alive.) The address is recorded twice more in my family in that year, first on 20 Jun 1861, when his daughter, Isabella, was married there to High HIGHGATE, and then when Peter himself died there on 16 July 1861. How long before then the family had been at that address I do not know - they were at a different address in Rothesay in 1851. A great grandchild of Peter's, Alexander FRASER, was born a few doors away, at no. 76, on 21 Jun 1871, presumably because relatives were living there - his parents lived in Glasgow. The family's last known connection with Montague Street was when Peter's daughter, Ann, died unmarried at no. 76 on 19 Feb 1873. Both of these events were rather nearer to your time. 3. Tom, How fantastic after all this time to find someone from Buteshire with a common ancestor. Like you I have John Bannatyne and Isobel Stewart as parents to Ann and likewise at this stage have no information on John McKays parents. I am currently awaiting 'Services of Heirs' information which might be helpful. Don't know whether you are aware of this but Ann, the daughter of Annabella's brother John was heir to brother James and subsequently Isobel and Annabellas son Archibald were co- heirs to Ann. This strongly suggests that these were the only two lines of this generation to continue. I will forward on copies when these arrive. How's the Latin? Other info I have on your line is pretty much restricted to Blain's account of the drowning deaths in a ferry boat mishap of Archibald Muir and the others. An elderly aunt of mine has a painting circa 1776 of the Revenue Cutter "Christie" which was we understand the vessel at one time captained by John McKay. The vast majority of what I have relates to the descendants of Isobel McKay and John Stewart and the ancestors of the latter. I am more than happy to share any information you want and likewise to receive anything you are happy to send. Cheers Bill

    3. Hi Steve, The McKirdy index misses: Date & hour of death, residence & cause of death. If the informant has a different surname, it can be hard to find them, also. The LDS film has the exact same certificate that you will get from the Scot GRO - but, much cheaper. 1. Re: Montague Street
    2. Hello everyone, My great-great-great-grandfather also lived in Montague Street - coincidentally at no 55, but a few years before your Patrick SHIELDS, Joanne. John HILL died at 55 Montague Street in 1862, agred 90. The 1861 census has him living there with his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Hill and her sons aged two and four. Elizabeth's husband Neil, a shipmaster(?), was away. They had the use of two rooms with windows. There were six families living at the same address. For the sake of accuracy, I should say that I am only 99 per cent sure that John, a retired hand loom weaver from Skipness, Kintyre, was my relative, Madeleine

    2. Steve Farmer
    3. Hi All, I have two deaths, one in 1860 and one in 1869, for which I woudl like more info. Apparently I can get an LDS film with these deaths on it or I can get the certs from Scots GRO. My question is, would the LDS films provide the same detail as the GRO certs? From the info gleaned from the McKirdy index it seems that the LDS film may well contain all the info. Anyone had any experience with this?
