Hi Listers, I just came on board and I would like to find out about a guest house that was once run by Martha and Tom Dick in Whiting Bay around the time of 1940-50. Would anyone know of this place and what the name of if was and is the house still standing and is it still a guest house or private? Thanks Lorraine Bomphray Ontario, Canada
Hi Everyone, Many thanks to Peter Cook for his welcome. As Peter has requested I shall you all a little a bit about myself. I'm Heather Thomas from Surrey, England. I work from home as a full time Carer to my two disabled, teenage sons and as a voluntary worker with the charity, the M.E. Association where I work as the Parent's Contact for England and Wales. Both of my sons and myself suffer from this debilitating disease. Fortunately my husband is healthy. I started researching my family tree earlier this year, with varying degrees of success. I have Scottish connections on both sides of the family. The line that I am interested in, in the Bute area, are the HENDRYs. All the family know that they came from Scotland originally but from where? I have asked all the older members of the family and nobody is completely sure but from the various places suggested, the Isle of Bute has tied with Glasgow as being the most likely, so here I am. I'm afraid that at the moment all the information I have is very vague. I have traced back to my Great, Great Grandfather JOHN HENDRY. He married MARGARET BROWN and in 1856 they had my Great Grandfather, ARCHIBALD JOHN HENDRY. I don't know if John and Margaret had any other children. By the time Archibald was born, they were living in Paddington, London. John Hendry is believed to be Scottish but I haven't actually been able to prove it yet and I do not know whether he married Margaret in Scot! land or England. I haven't been able to trace them on the 1881 Census. The only other thing I know about John is that he was a railway engine fitter, an occupation that Archibald went into once he left the army and Archibald's son also went into. There is also the possibility that they may have been called MacHendry or McHendry at some stage in the past as several of my older relations have a faint recollection of their father's telling them this. I am very sorry that it is all so vague but at the moment I am having to try every angle that I can think of to progress with this line. If by some remote chance, any of this sounds familiar to anyone, I would really love to hear from you or if anyone has any advice as to what I can do next, I would much appreciate hearing from you too. Many thanks. Irene, You are just so knowledgeable about everything in Scotland and I thankyou so much for your assistance. Today I will write to The court of the Lord Lyon and it will be interesting to see what they can find out for me. As you said, maybe my Francis TOWNLEY was just called the Baron of Brodick as some sort of nickname. Anyway I'll let you know of my findings. Regards Anne in Auckland
Dot Not likely to be in Battye (State Archive), but possibly in main Alexander Library in the genealogy section (first floor). There definitely is a copy at WAGS in Bayswater, which is where I picked up the details. You should be able to use the on-line catalog in your local library, to check whether there is a copy in the Alexander Library - may even be able to order it on inter-library loan. While these comments are obviously specific to Western Australia, the availability of books via any inter-library loan service should always be a first step when a new reference is given. It's surprising what books are held by some quite small library systems. Beyond that, the best source for second hand books on the Internet is probably Advanced Book Exchange http://www.abebooks.com/ followed by Biblio find http://www.bibliofind.com/ . For a wider list of bookshops try http://www.staffs.ac.uk/services/library_and_info/bookshop.html regards Peter -----Original Message----- From: Dot Wells <wells@wanet.com.au> To: ButeshireGenWeb-L@rootsweb.com <ButeshireGenWeb-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, 2 September 2001 11:12 Subject: Re: MI's for Isle of Arran >Hello Peter, > >Do you know if these MIs are available at the Battye Library in Perth, >Western Australia? >Cheers, >- >Dot Wells (nee Maclean) >Perth, Western Australia.
Hello Peter, Do you know if these MIs are available at the Battye Library in Perth, Western Australia? Dear Peter I have found another good site on the web which lives up to its slogan - "the books you never thought you'd find". Should have thought of sharing this before. It's called Alibris. Have bought several books from them, no complaints at all. Jennie PS Link is http://www.alibris.com
The MI's for Bute & Arran are covered by the one publication : "Pre - 1855 Gravestone Inscriptions on BUTE and ARRAN" An Index Edited by Alison Mitchell for the Scottish Genealogical Society. 1987 ISBN 0 901061 31 X. Covers: Bute (5) made up of ... Rothesay (3), Kingarth (2), Cumbrae (1) Arran (8) made up of Kilbride (2) Kilmory (6) There was also a "Manpower Commission" full MI survey conducted in the early ? 1990's , copies of this are in the local libraries on Arrran and Bute, as well as in the Strathclyde Archives office. Maybe someone else can improve of my hazy recollections of this project ? regards Peter -----Original Message----- From: Kathy Tolman <kltolman@home.com> To: ButeshireGenWeb-L@rootsweb.com <ButeshireGenWeb-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, 2 September 2001 01:39 Subject: MI's for Isle of Arran >Hi, > >Can anyone tell me if the MI's for Isle of Arran have been transcribed, >and if so, where I can purchase a copy. > >Thank you. > >Kathy Tolman > > >==== ButeshireGenWeb Mailing List ==== >********************************************************************* ** >For Websites or WebPages of Buteshire GenWeb subscribers see >http://www.rootsweb.com/~sctbutes/homepage.htm > >============================== >Join the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project: >Linking the world, one GEDCOM at a time. >http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com >
Welcome to Harold Young, "CaledonC", Heather Thomas and Marla Fair who have joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** What swings around comes around - this ButeshireGenWeb list was created by Chester H Cowen three years ago this week, so happy birthday to the loyal subscribers who have been here since day one, and to the rest of the 160+ current subscribers. Last week was by far the busiest for this list in quite a while, with over 50 posts. When the mail volumes goes up like this, there is one unfortunate side effect, as List Maintainer I get more bounces. Please, if you are on a low cost / small mail box plan, remember to clear your mailbox regularly. On slow weeks if you don't get this weekly post, then check your subscription. If you want to check any of the rest of the nearly 1500 messages (including most BUT not all of the 400+ Board posts [some pre-date the gateway system]) go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl , enter the list name ButeshireGenWeb - then select a year, and enter your search parameters. {As Irene has already pointed out, this is the archive referred to by Daphne earlier this week} Bill pointed the way to the Caledonian McBrayne site for current inter-island travel. Don't forget that the full text of McPhun's 1835 "Scottish Tourists Steam Boat Pocket Guide" is also on line at http://cookfmly.rootsweb.com/mcphun1835/index.html for descriptions and travel routes at that time. Thanks also to Martyn for sharing his little bit of "serendipity". ****** ****** ****** When responding to a subject raised in this weekly posting, please apply the same rules as apply to responding to Digest messages - that is, change the subject to suit the content of your response, TIA. ****** ****** ****** One more general note re Message Board Posts: Rootsweb policy is that any Surnames listed in the "Subject" field and/or the "Surname" field MUST also be referred to in the body of the message. Board Admins are required to remove any Surnames which have no relevance to the content of the post. This is to ensure that the search engine works to maximum efficiency. Please note that Board Admin's cannot change the content of the body of the post. This does not mean that lists of names can be placed there - doing that will, in most cases, simply lead to the removal of the whole post. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. Hi Wendy, Sorry to take so long to reply and then to do so in the negative. At this stage I have to say that I cannot find any connections that look remotely likely. To date I don't have one single David Stewart in any of the generations I have so far studied. On the McKay side, to date we effectively only have 2 generations as, of John McKay's children, there were only two lines of issue and they were via daughters. Thus the name does not continue very far.(yet) I'll store the details in the "review" file and let you know if anything turns up. Cheers Bill Bill
Hello Leanna and Irene, I've misplaced my chart of Archibald and Jean. Now I will have to do a paper search to find the chart and see if I have the source of my information listed, I do know it was not a confirmed piece, but it came from my Dad. I have too many Thomson/Crawford relatives. I am presently viewing the West Kilbride film looking for my Gilkison ancestors, just found John and his wife Elizabeth Tyre. Their parents were named, another generation finally confirmed. Will now look add Thomson to my list of names to watch out for on this film. Ann
Hi all I don't think I have any more about Jean Thomson. However I am going up to Millport at lunchtime today (84 year old mother is not coping) and will be there till Tuesday. I'll take the Cumbrae file with me and have a look at it. I'll also have my laptop so I'll be able to keep in touch. Irene
Hi Irene and Ann, After a closer reading Irene's 1851 Census info for Archibald Crawford. I noticed that his wife, Jean (Jane) Thomson's, birthplace was Kilbride Ayr. I had her born 1774 on Cumbrae but there are 2 Jean Thomsons in the IGI, born in West Kilbride, Ayr. One b 8 May 1774 in West Kilbride, Ayr daughter of Thomas and Jean Thomson. The other b. 8 Aug 1779, daughter of John Thomson and Mary Bruce. Definitely worth a little more investigation. That is unless you have more goodies up your sleeve, Irene:) Leanna
