Greetings from Toronto Canada I am searching for evidence of a Peter McElman? born about 1844, later adopted into the DOW family of Glasgow, and in 1873 emigrated to Montreal in Canada and known as Peter DOW. Peter is reputed to have been born on/around Loch Awe (NW Glasgow) Can someone identify the parish in that area, would it be Argyl & Bute? Thanks for any clues Fred Dimond

If you are a Hunter or have Hunter relatives who lived in any of these islands I would be extremely grateful if you would give me an outline of their residence in Buteshire. As you may know, the Hunters are traditionally considered to be a sept of the Stuarts of Bute but the reasons why are rarely mentioned in 'Clan' Books. I would like to find out the extent of Hunter residence in these Stuart territories and about their connection with the Stuarts. Any information you may have on these subjects would be fantastic. Thanks, Calum.

I have not found any Irvings there in my searches so far. He would have been born about 1820-1830. Has anyone run across Irvings in their research on Arran. I'm wondering if that could be a misspelling or misinterpratation of Annan in Dumfries where ther do seem to be Irvings but not mine so far. Thanks Sandie
My great great grandmother Jeanie (Jean) Ralston was born in Glasgow. Her father William was a merchant.....maybe from Tollcross? Jeanie married William Wright in 1850 in Rothesay, Bute. They both spent time between Ulster and Scotland. He was a cattle dealer and she owned land in Strabane, Co. Tyrone, N. Ireland. William's father Robert was a grocer/wine merchant in Rothesay 1800+ William and Jeanie had a son William Ralston Wright b 1834 who married Katherine Dougherty in Glasgow 1880. In 1881 Census they were at 4 Argyle Street, Rothesay listed with infant daughter Jeanie Moira. Looking for other siblings/family/info from Rothesay. Liz Australia

I am trying to determine if they came from Doune in Perth to Rothesay. I have: William N. Buchanan, b.4/11/1861 Rothesay, d.11/28/1924 Boston. His parents were Charles Buchanan b.2/17/1829 Rothesay d.1/5/1869 and Janet Sharp b.1829 d.1911 Rothesay. His parents were Colin Buchanan d.9/7/1860 Rothesay and Catherine Downie d.5/17/1864. I believe Colin may have been born in Doune, but I'm not sure and I am trying to trace back further towards the clan around Loch Lomond. I believe Colin's parents were Andrew Buchanan and Florence Henderson [not the Brady Bunch!] but I have no dates for them, nor locations, although they may have been married in Kilmadock, Perth 4/3/1779. If you have any connections or information about this line, please let me know. Karen Clickner

Hello everyone Just re-listing my Bute interests in case anyone has any knowledge of them or possible connections. Christina H. McALLISTER was born on Bute about 1811. In 1840 she emigrated to Sydney, Australia with her husband, James WILSON, and their son James aboard the ship "Joseph Cunard". The family may have been living in Greenoch before they left. The IGI has a Christina McALISTER being born at Cumun (Parish?), Bute in 1811. Relative: Mary Florence BRIGHT STOCKS. Does anyone have a connection with this family? Can anyone throw any light on the location Cumun? Is it a parish? -- Ian Jones Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
