List owner, On all of my other mailing lists in Scotland, there is something in the subject line indicating that the message is from the mailing list. For example, the Ayrshire list shows [AYR] before the message subject. Is there some way to do this for the Buteshire list? Thank you. Kathy Tolman
Does anyone know what a yell beast is?
Many thanks to the people from various lists who answered this query. I gather the Mitchell Library may have these records and look forward to checking them when I come to Scotland again next year. The last reply I had was addressed to the Midlothian List and had an attachment. I never open these on principal and have advised the sender they may have a virus since the lists do not allow attachments. Looks like there is another lot doing the rounds. Mary

In New Zealand the census returns are destroyed after analysis, but the electoral rolls are often available for searching. What happens to these in U.K? They are a very useful source, if preserved. If anyone knows where the Scottish or English ones can be accessed, I would greatly appreciate the information. Mary Hamilton

Hi, I am new to this list and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Linda Phillips, I live in North Carolina, married, age 47 and I am a retired field botanist. I have been working on family history for about 3 years but do not consider myself a true genealogist because so much of what I have collected has come from others that have done the research or by dumb luck. This past summer I did spend some time in Michigan going through court house records and rambling through cemeterys. In researching my McKillop family from the Isle of Arran, I became involved with all of the families on that island with that name. Working with the OPR records as a puzzle trying to make connections has been rewarding in my own family search but also frustrating were data is lacking. I would like to find someone who has access to the 1801 census for the island and also find McKillops in the pre 1850 military records. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Irene, I visited Millport for a day on a recent trip to Scotland (my first) and much to my surprise, found Agnes buried in the old cemetery. I had assumed that she had died and been buried in Glasgow. I lost my hastily scribbled notes but I took a photograph of her headstone and I cannot decipher the date of her death. This is what I was able to make out: Erected by Archibald Crawford in loving memory of his wife Agnes Finnie ??????? June 1860 Aged 59 years She is buried next to Susanna Finnie, John Finnie and Mary Paterson and numerous other buried with them. Leanna

Welcome to Fred Dimond who has/have joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** As the item below includes references to Scottish records and comes from the host of this list, I have included this "commercial" extract from a recent RootsWeb Review... ----- ----- ----- UK/IRELAND DATA COLLECTION DEBUTS. To date, Ancestry.com's collection of genealogical databases has focused largely on U.S. records However, many users have requested genealogical records from around the globe. In response, Ancestry now offers a new data collection featuring high-quality and exclusive records from the United Kingdom and Ireland. With new records being added daily, the United Kingdom/Ireland subscription will grow constantly with birth, marriage, death, probate, immigration, and directory databases. WHAT UK/IRELAND DATA COLLECTION INCLUDES: --Parish and probate records with about 15 million names found in birth, marriage, death, probate, and burial records from historical parish registers in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland ranging in dates from 1538 to 1837. --Civil Registration Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes -- This collection of 14 million names includes an index that is searchable by name, record type, district and county. Eventually this index will include every registered birth, marriage, and death in England and Wales between 1837 and 1900. --Pallot Marriage and Baptism Index -- This exclusive 4-million name collection from England and Wales identifies the parish in which the marriage or baptism was celebrated, names of participants, and date of the event. The original image of the record is also available to UK/Ireland subscribers. --Irish Famine Index - An index of 600,000 names that catalogues the immigration of many Irish during the Potato Famine of 1846-51 compiled from passenger lists and other immigration documents. The UK/Ireland Collection is sold as a separate subscription for $69.95, billed annually for new customers. Subscriptions billed quarterly are $24.95.
