    2. Sue Lund
    3. I have been busy updating the SCT BDM Exchange site again. It now holds 7,820 records and growing. I am in the process of learning to use Active Server Pages, to allow easier updating for me and seach facilities for users. Once I've overcome this hurdle I will be adding a stack of births and marriages. To view the site, go to - http://www.sctbdm.com/ Cheers Sue Lund

    1. List Admin - Virus (Worm) warning
    2. Peter Cook
    3. As I said a couple of Sunday's ago, silly season is with us ... Here's an extract from the Symantec site: Due to the increased rate of submission and level of damage, Symantec Security Response is upgrading W32.Goner.A@mm from Category 3 to Category 4. W32.Goner.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that is written in Visual Basic. The worm has been compressed using a known Portable Executable (PE)* file compressor. The worm can spread its infection using the ICQ network as well as by email using Microsoft Outlook. If IRC is installed, this worm can also insert mIRC scripts that will enable the computer to be used in Denial of Service (DOS) attacks. Distribution: Subject of email: Hi Message text: How are you ? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you I am in a harry, I promise you will love it! Name of attachment: Gone.scr Size of attachment: 38,912 bytes To find out more about W32/Goner-A and download protection go to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.goner.a@mm.html or visit the website of your anti-virus software vendor. 3. Welcome to Heather Gallard and C. Miwa who have joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** I'm running late today, due to an essential anti-virus update taking precedence. NB also that with Badtrans-B DO NOT reply to the e-mail - this can activate the virus. Use the Properties option available when you right click on the message line in your inbox. Cut and paste the e-mail address from the details pane, and don't forget to remove the leading underscore if there is one. Please add John & Danielle Phillpott jppdsp@lm.net.au to the list of subscribers whose PC's have been struck down, thanks Ruth. Thanks also to those who responded off list with advice about this virus. I gather my early warning message saved at least one list subscriber from being caught out, but wasn't quite in time for another. It is timely to remind all newcomers, that there is no way that you can receive a virus file DIRECTLY from RootsWeb based mailing lists, as the mail program automatically strips any attachments from the message, and only forwards the message. If you receive a message with a virus attachment, then no matter how it is addressed, it has come direct from the infected PC, not via the list. At the time you receive the horrible nasty thing, the sender may not even be aware that their PC has become infected, so let them down gently. When corresponding directly with other list members, I suggest that you confirm that they are willing to receive an attachment before sending same. When you get the 'all clear', make sure that the covering note with the attachment has a description of the attachment - including the file name(s). For example "The attached family.zip file contains 'name'.ged which is the gedcom file for my 'name' family, and tree.rtf which contains extra details about my 'name' family." ****** ****** ****** New Releases from ARCHIVE CD BOOKS (http://www.archivecdbooks.com) for SCOTLAND ... ** The Social Life of Scotland in the 18th Century An excellent account of life in Scotland during the 1700s see Scotland page ** Curiosities of Glasgow Citizenship A fascinating book about Glasgow and its people see Lanarkshire page ****** ****** ****** Some updates and a reminder ... 3. With no reference, I have no idea what you're talking about here. (???). Also, beware as there is a virus being rotated through the email system and many of us have gotten no subject heading messages with attachments. If you open the attachment, you invited this virus into your system. If you're talking about something else, please remember that the whole board sees these messages and it would be nice to know who you are responding to or place a little of the previous message in the text body to let us know what the subject is about. Thanks. 2. Peter Cook
    3. Attention All Please note that I have received messages with virus attachments from the following list members - please treat any message from them that has an attachment with extreme caution. They will no doubt advise the list when they are again virus free. Sheryn Carruthers sheryn@carruthers50.freeserve.co.uk Jennie Hardie jenniehardie@xtra.co.nz Many of you will remember the "badtrans" virus last year. These two members have been struck by another strain of this virus called: W32.Badtrans.B@mm This one arrives as a blank message but has an attachment with a hiden auto-run code segment. Please delete these messages unopened immediately. It uses an actual Subject Heading of the person's posting so you think you are getting a reply to your query. One of the above was RE: ButeshireGenWeb-L !!!! On Sunday I mentioned the problem of the auto-run nature of this virus if you use a preview panel. For those running affected versions of IE 5, Microsoft has released a patch which addresses the vulnerability. It is available at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp. regards Peter List Maintainer PS to Martyn Taylor I think this response fits with your query re a message from a Mary MacIntyre maryamac@mcintyresuma.freeserve.co.uk who is NOT a list member.

    3. No new members this week, although I have had a couple of e-mail CoA's (including Elizabeth's via the list, which has been fixed). ****** ****** ****** The Clyde Passenger Steamers list of Owners / Masters now extends to 1866 - see http://cookfmly.rootsweb.com/cps_list/ Sorry, there was a missing / in both links in last weeks post, so I'll also repeat the McPhun link ... http://cookfmly.rootsweb.com/mcphun1835/ ****** ****** ****** Nathan (Nate) Zipfel, ScotlandGenWeb Project Coordinator, came across the following link which may be of interest to you. http://www.scotlandsclans.com/cemeteries.htm Some cemeteries in Scotland by counties. ****** ****** ****** As we approach the festive season (Christmas is just 30 days away), we also approach the high season for new (and repeat) computer viruses and hoaxes. As always 1) do not open unsolicited attachments no matter how enticing they look. 2) use a virus protection program 3) keep the virus definitions for that program up to date 4) to avoid the unnecessary mailings that hoaxes create, DO NOT send virus warnings direct to the list - forward any that are of concern to the admin address ButeshireGenWeb-admin@rootsweb.com After checking, I will if necessary, forward a warning to the list. Here are a couple of reminders ... Windows users please note that 1) if you are running IE 5.0 or earlier, that is your PC does not have the latest Microsoft IE patch installed, the latest version of Badtrans attachment may run from the preview pane via an autorun HTML code segment inserted in the covering e-mail. Two solutions: 1) dispense with the use of the preview pane, 2) upgrade. 2) The hoax message advising the recipient to delete "SULFNBK.EXE" is also doing the rounds again - do NOT delete this file - although oddly named, it IS an essential part of the Windows operating system. Check http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html for details. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 1. List Admin - lost mail
    2. Peter Cook
    3. I have been advised that RootsWeb's Mail system was down for about 12 hours from about 3:30am US Mountain Time (GMT-7) on Sunday 18 November 2001. Unlike previous outages, mail sent in this time has NOT been saved for later dispatch, but HAS been lost. If you sent anything during those hours and it has not appeared, then you will need to resend. Please note also a general comment that Mailing lists with the query board gateway set on, will not have received any gatewayed messages forwarded during that time. I have checked the Bute Query Board, there were no messages posted during that period - if you have other boards that you monitor via the complementary mailing list then you may need to check the board itself for posts. regards Peter List maintainer

    3. Welcome to Christine Mladen and Lee Babbitt who have joined this week, and welcome back to Martyn Taylor and Mary Hamilton. ****** ****** ****** Thanks to Bill and Colin for their postings on past elections in Rothesay. Thanks also to Madeleine, and Bill (again) for their items on the Bute Police. Quite an informative week. ****** ****** ****** Christine asked about ships and their owners - "Clyde Passenger Steamers from 1812 to 1901" by Captain James Williamson published by MacLehose in 1904, has an appendix listing all steamers put into coastal service in that period. For the 309 steamers, it lists the year they were put into service, then for most it also has the Shipbuilder, the Engine Maker, the original owner(s), master and route, as well as technical details on dimensions and machinery. I have put some of this up on a new web page at http:/cookfmly.rootsweb.com/cps_list/ There are 173 out of the 309 done so far which covers 1812 to 1851(part), BUT it only has the names - none of the technical details. Look up requests for specific vessels or people for the remaining period 1851 to 1901 with subject "Clyde Steamers" should be sent OFF list, thanks. Directories are another source for Shipping information - Archive CD Books "Directory of Scotland 1825" (reviewed in #123) has a section on shipping, at the end of the trades entries for each town that had a steamer or sailing boat service. Gives vessel name(s) and timetable. Finally for descriptions of the routes themselves in 1835, go to http:/cookfmly.rootsweb.com/mcphun1835/ ****** ****** ****** GATEWAYED POSTS I have had an off list request to turn off the Gateway. As the traffic on both the Bute query board and to this list is generally light, I have denied the request - the gateway will remain open (for the time being). ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items.
