Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SeC.2ACI/79.213.1.1 Message Board Post: My history tells me that, apparently, the McCaw family were kicked out of Scotland for sheep stealing, so the story goes! This may have referred to a refusal to tithe to the church the required money - sheep. Apparently, the name MacCaw (Scottish version) became McCaw when they moved to Ireland and changed from the Catholic religion to Protestant religion. Im told of people insisting that two small lines be written under the small "c". The earlies recorded McCaw in my history is a Alexander McCaw of Craig Townland, Ireland. (1669) The next is John McCaw , the younger, (1776) and then Duncan McCaw b. May 1780. Duncan was a Church warden and is buried in the Ballintoy Churchyard. He died around 1857.

I have this written from "The Surnames of Scotland" Black, Pgs 466, 467 at Peterborough Public Library, Ontario. In 1696, Gildow MacCaw was Commissioner of Supply for Bute, James Brown McCaw, 1772 - 1846 of Scots parentage and educated in Edinburgh, ranked as a leading surgeon of Eastern Virginia. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the name of the Bute family had become Mackay. "Mac" has been also dropped in Caw, is a present day surname. 3. No new subscribers this week, however as always, if you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** There have been problems at RootsWeb over the past few weeks, including some with the query boards, however there have been no gatewayed posts lost from the Bute board - it's just a slow time of the year. One minor advantage of being a small list is that we seem to have missed out on the List problems that have been occurring ... a) mail for late 9th early 10th was not posted until late 11th early 12th, and b) there have been a number of multiple copies of single posts appearing on lists since that 9th/10th delay (duplicated by RootsWeb not the poster). ****** ****** ****** Regarding my post last week on "census mini-essays', Pat Jeffs wrote ... "There weren't any comments on the 1841 census but I have hopes that there may be some on the 1851. I am not transcribing it, but I have asked Bill McKinlay to keep a watch for them. My gg grandfather, John Palmer, was enumerating somewhere in Rothesay and he liked to add his personal bit. He enumerated in KKD in 1841 and I found the notice there--elementary statistical theorising--must run in the family! <smile> Once he became Burgh Registrar in 1855 John Palmer always had a note in The Buteman just after the new year summarising the b-m-d for the year past." ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 1. [BUT] Census notes
    2. Bill McKinlay
    3. Last week Peter raised the question of comments on census films. >From what I can see, they were absent from the county in 1841. In the 1851 census there was, at the start of each enumeration district, a space for remarks of the Minister of the Parish. While the majority of these, that I have seen so far, are nothing more than a declaration that it's an accurate record, the Minister for Cumbray had a bit more to say for himself. He did have handwriting however that is even worse than mine so this is the best I can. do. "ED 1 As this is the largest district, I here remark in regard to the parish generally, that by the present census the population is 138 less than in 1841. To account for this it is remarked that the pop. In '41 was taken in June when in summer this place is ... to by visitors and others for the benefit of their health, hence the decrease. At the same time the Native population is about 1000 an I have several times observed in the course of my official visitations; and the [increase?] from 1000 to 1275 to be accounted for, from the circumstance of there being at present - as for about 2 years past, a vast importation of masons, joiners, labourers etc employed in the erection of new building, while, when complete - they will again be obliged to leave the parish. At the same time a few visitors and strangers were in the village when the census was taken. ED 2. As this No 2 forms part of the village of Millport, the remarks made on No 1 apply to this district. P.S. In No 3 I have remarked that there is an increase of the population in the country, which perhaps ought to have been entried in No 1 & which will afill farther account for the increase of the population generally for these three or four years ED 3. The Little Cumbray, the population of which has been taken, is not part of the parish of Cumbray but of West Kilbride, Ayrshire and yet it is in the County of Bute and so, for that reason I conclude it has been included with the parish. It will be observed that in the county there are 15 houses and 127 persons, the rest of the population being confined to the village of Millport. The population has increased in the country district in consequence of a greater number of agricultural labourers being required for improvements and the reclaiming of waste land. I approve of the manner in which the enumerator has discharged his duties." There are also, occasionally, some interesting descriptions of the individual enumeration districts within the county. Following are a couple from Arran (Again 1851) ED # 8 Kilbride The district combines the village of Lamlash and a few detached farm houses upon both sides of the said village. There are no public works going on in the village. It is a great watering place. Steam boats run twixt Glasgow and Lamlash every day during the steamer season and crowds of people come from Glasgow, Paisley and all the neighbouring towns upon the opposite coast of the mainland. Lamlash district is bounded upon the east and nor-east by the Brodick road , on the north and nor-west by the heathery hills that stand about 1 quarter of a mile above Lamlash, on the west and south-west by Penlester Burn, a small water that runs from the hills and upon the south east by the far famed harbour of Lamlash so acceptable by the poor fatigued sailor. ED # 1 Kilmory So much of the parish of Kilmory as lies between the march separating Dipping from Kilbride Parish and Levencorrach Water (comprehending five farms vis:- Dipping, Kildonian, Drumlabarra, Ballymenoch and Auchenhew also the island of Pladda.) The district is entirely agricultural, each farm divided into lots of different sizes varying from 16 acres to 50 acres each. These lots increase in size as to their distance to the shore, their rent varying form 15/- per Scotch acre to 35/- according to the quality of the land and the nearness to the shore for seaweed for manure. The Island of Pladda is separated from Arran by a channel about a mile in breadth If anything else turns up I will let you know. Cheers, Bill

    1. [BUT] Braeside Cottage or Burnside Cottage, Ascog Rothesay
    2. Liz Larsen
    3. Hi listers, I have found that my gg grandfather William Wright (born Rothesay 1827) later grew up in a cottage built by his father Robert about 1851 (a Coal Merchant & Ship Owner in Rothesay at the time). It was in Ascog and they named it "Braeside Cottage" although in another birth certificate of later family it was noted as "Burnside Cottage". I am pretty sure that it was Braeside as they named their new home in New Zealand Braeside. Can anyone tell me if this place still exists or anything that can help me with the above family. Many thanks, Liz in Australia

    1. [BUT] Girls on IGI but no boys
    2. The following is forwarded to the list with permission, and is something to be aware of when doing IGI searches: ""I have had some private messages re my post on this topic (i.e. no males appearing in the online IGI in some batches extracted from the OPR - specifically Straiton) but thought that I would reply on list. MY QUERY TO THE LDS I have written to the Familysearch people asking them (a) why only one sex appears to have been extracted from certain OPRs into the online IGI, (b) whether the full records are in the films of the parishes involved (I assume - and hope - that they must be),(c) what the situation is with the old microfiche, (d) how one can find out which OPRs have had only one sex extracted into the online IGI, and (e) why there is no mention of this anywhere on their site.  I will let the List know when I get a reply. LANARK LIST However, I have also done some further searching and find that this matter has been raised on the Lanark list.  A Lanark lister who had found the same problem (i.e. males missing in certain LKS birth/christening batches) queried the LDS and quoted the following as the reply she received "Under certain circumstances, we perform extractions that meet particular criteria. The situation you mentioned is one of these, and we extracted only one gender.  There is no need to make corrections to this information." HUGH WALLIS'S SITE I have also found that Hugh Wallis, on his magnificent site, writes as follows at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumberFAQs.htm#O nlyFemales: 'The following is an explanation from the director of the LDS library that was forwarded to me by an interested user of this site: "Thank you for your note. Your observations are correct and at least to some degree explainable. More females attend LDS temples than males creating an imbalance in the inventory system. To solve that issue, the batches were split into male and female (J and K batches). The females were sent to the temples, and in some cases the male portion of the batch has not yet been sent, but is waiting in the inventory." I'm not personally convinced this totally explains it but that is the official explanation anyway. That same user also forwarded me this observation; "Incidentally, I have since discovered that some of the missing males are in the Vital Records Index - for example for Dauntsey, Wiltshire, 1653-1885, females only are in the IGI, both males and females are in the VRI." ' One can't complain - after all, where would we all be without the LDS work. But it does seem puzzling. Judy Philip Adelaide, South Australia edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton Anti-Virus 2003
