Hi all, I have found the following Ministers comment at the start of the 1851 census for North Bute; (Writing extremely difficult to read but think this is accurate.) "The reason why the average number of individuals in each family in the rural districts of North Bute exceeds that which obtains in the village of Pt. Bannatyne, the district included within enumeration book is that, in the country sections, a considerable number of farm servants is imported annually thereto, chiefly from the county of Argyll. John McArthur Minister of North Bute" This comment seems to be supported somewhat a breakdown of the statistics of the parish - 10% of the North Bute population being classified as farm or general labourers/servants, their families etc. from Argyll. A breakdown of North Bute and Kingarth shows the percentage of those that were born within and outside the county. County_ _ _ _ _ _North Bute_ _ _ _ _ Kingarth Bute.....................54%.........................59% Argyll...................25%.........................19% Ayr.......................6%...........................6% Lanark..................3%...........................5% Renfrew................2%...........................2% Dunbarton.............1%...........................<1% Ireland...................1%...........................2% Perth......................<1%........................1% All other locations were less than 1%. One thing I found of interest was that in the whole rural area of the island of Bute, only 3 individuals are recorded as originating from Arran. I'm guessing here but I imagine that, as the census was in spring, the number of 'imports' would probably be lower than might be the case during the autumn harvest? Cheers, Bill
No new members this week, but as always, if you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** Co-host Barbara had this to say about my "Found while browsing:" item last week... "Funny - I just found that this week! And have had much unexpected success e.g. a guy who, on the census, is referred to as "skinner". (Boring, right? A small step up from ag lab right?) Well, no - a search of scan for the surname turns up that he and brother and sons had been exporters of leather to US in 1700s- and a netsearch for that surname with leather turned up the company, still in business, and a new correspondent ....a direct decendant of the family who still works at the company. On another note - a caution... I have also spent much time (and $) on the scottishdocuments.com site. So far - nothing has been a will - all have been probate papers, and most of them are of the boilerplate variety (e.g. attorneys swearing that they have indeed surveyed the holdings of so-and-so according to the laws of such-and-such). Little people information - other than those names which appear in the index (for free!). And -- be sure and click on "More info" before you order...sometimes there is an additional name or identifying remark in that popup. Also found some stuff on Historical Manuscripts Commission (not sure if these are included within SCAN)... http://www.hmc.gov.uk/nra/search_nra.htm " ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. There is an age discrepancy with everything about her as with her sister. On the death certificate her father's name is given as William but William was her brother in law, my gt grandfather who was a ploghman at Barone, Dullant, Kerrytonlia and Ambrisbeg. If this ais any use to you I will send the details of the death and anything else I can remember. My grandparents moved into the house at Meadowcap some years later. Hoping to hear from you Regards Marguerite
Hi Maria I'm copying this to the list as others might be interested. I've got a transcription of their marriage certificate and Margaret's death certificate. I also have a transcription of their son Peter's marriage and death certificates. I've also got a transcription of Margaret's sister Mary's death certificate as she was married to a Daniel Hyndman. I'm descended from Peter Hyndman and Margaret Currie from Arran. Some of the family moved to Renfrewshire and I've been trying to unravel them all. Let me know which of any of the transcriptions you'd like. Best Wishes, Margaret FreeCen Co-ordinator Glasgow and Barony http://members.aol.com/margsi/Glasgow1841.htm
