Genealogy begins as an interest becomes a hobby continues as a vocation takes over as an obsession and in its last stages is an incurable disease. ****** ****** ****** To each and everyone of you and your families, have a peaceful and enjoyable time during the forthcoming festive season. Welcome back to Patsy Desilets who has successfully rejoined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** Following my post last week with a date calculated from the 1871 Census date, I have been asked off list about all the available census dates - for the benefit of those who don't have them down pat, here's the list again:- 1841 overnight Sunday 6 June / Monday 7 June 1851 overnight Sunday 30 March / Monday 31 March 1861 overnight Sunday 7 April / Monday 8 April 1871 overnight Sunday 2 April / Monday 3 April 1881 overnight Sunday 3 April / Monday 4 April 1891 overnight Sunday 5 April / Monday 6 April 1901 overnight Sunday 31 March / Monday 1 April *** 1911 overnight Sunday 2 April / Monday 3 April >From the above, it becomes clear why some people quote one date and others another. However, dates (as per my example last week) are generally computed from the relevant Monday. *** NB 1911 will not be available for general access until 2 Jan 2012 except by personal application - you have to be able to show you are a direct descendant, and have to give just one name and the address - if either is incorrect, that's all you get told - no refund. One would hope that the early 2002 debacle over the availability of 1901 is NOT repeated in 2012 ?!? ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. I had hoped to say welcome back to Patsy Desilets, however mail to her new address is already bouncing :-( As always, if you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** While not based on my Bute research lines, the following anecdote reaffirms the need to find all available documents for our ancestors ... While inputting data from one of my mother's lines into my Reunion database a while back, I came across an 1871 census entry with the age of a child given as 11 days - indicating a birth date of 23 March 1871. Later in her records, I found a photocopy of the birth certificate for a child of the same name dated 18th May 1870 with the hand written comment "should the 1871 entry read 11 months ?" and in a different colour "maybe an earlier child of the same name?" but this was in turn crossed out with a further comment "dates too close !?!". With the benefit of a fully searchable CD set, I then found the 1881 entry for this child - away at boarding school with her elder sister in another county - this gave her age as 10 yrs - matching the birth certificate. So why "11 days" in 1871 - was my mother correct in her assumption of an error ? I now have the answer as the baptism date for this child was, as some may already have guessed, 23 March 1871. So while incorrect in one sense, the 1871 age did connect to a real event. Moral: if an age at census does not match known facts (especially with children), do not be too quick to dismiss it as an error - equally make sure that such queries are marked so later researchers can follow up on them. ****** ****** ****** List Admin: SPAM Blocking If you are switching to a spam blocking program that requires the sender to reply before their e-mail is allowed through; please change your ButeshireGenWeb subscription to Digest mode then add ButeshireGenWeb-D-request@rootsweb.com to your "safe" address list. I know that Alexander immigrated to American as did, I think, one or two other children All children were born in Lurgan and or Newton. The source for the children is Parochial Register, County of Bute Kilmory, Lochranza — Baptisms I have a great many American sources for Alexander and his wife, Sybil Cannon, but practically nothing on John and Catherine and other children. Apologies to those who receive this on more than one list. I'm looking for everyone who can claim a family connection to McKERRELLs on the Isle of Islay, Argyllshire, Scotland. They are widely scattered and are known to have settled at least in Canada, South Africa, East Africa, USA and Australia. The reason for the search is to invite them to the very first family reunion called "The McKerrells Return to Islay" http://clanmckerrell.50free.net/return.htm, to be held on Islay from 11 to 13 June 2004. The event is designed to be high on fun and low on formality, a chance to meet new relatives and old friends, and to find their place in the family tree. The Chieftain of the McKerrells, Charles McKerrell of Hillhouse, has expressed an interest in attending. The date was chosen to complement "Tilleadh Chlann Ile" (http://www.islayreturn.com) a family history event for subscribers to the SCT-ISLAY list that is being held on Islay from 6 to 10 June 2004. I know there are lots of Islay McKerrell descendants out there, whatever their present surname and however it is spelled. If you know of any, I'd be grateful if you can pass on to them the text of this message, or simply let me have their e-mail address.. I can be contacted at clanmckerrell@hotmail.com, or via the Islay McKerrells website at http://clanmckerrell.50free.net/return.htm. My grateful thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. Welcome to a rep from Clan McKerrell who has joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** Spent an enjoyable evening recently swapping stories with a fellow Os family historian on the trials and tribulations of 'on the ground' research in England - I am going to get across the border to visit Arran and adjacent parts eventually. Topics included the varying size & cost of B&B breakfasts, best time of day to travel, etc. One thing we were both in agreement on, is not to attempt to squeeze too much into a day, especially in terms of distance travelled. One of the hardest things to get over to new travellers to the UK in general is that for road travel once off the motorways, any comparison with travel times back home over similar distances should be at least doubled if not multiplied by 2.5; while for public transport the smaller the quantity of luggage the better, as the distance from the bus/train station to the eventual destination is almost always longer in fact than it appears on the map By far the best results also seem to come from a relaxed itinerary - not matter how keen one is to resolve all those brick-walls, trying to do too much usually leads to frustration, and more importantly can lead to the wrong choice when one gets behind. Anyway I hope we are not going to have to wait too long for Linda's tale of her Arran visit - hinted at not long ago. ****** ****** ****** Admin: With the impact of the "sven" virus still in effect with large quantities of spam circulating, to combat the problem many ISP's are at last offering both Anti Spam and Anti Virus products to their users. Unfortunately at least one subscriber's ISP: gem.co.za is using an AV scan product with a bug in it. This causes the email to loop around about five of that ISP's servers, and then repeat until the "too many hops" trigger is activated. The resultant bounced message headers are 70+ Kb in size. I am advised that the problem is being worked on, so if you have been having problems contacting 'hillbilly', this may be the reason. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. Hi Peter and listers Thanks for the warm welcome to your site. I'm researching any (Mac)GILCHRIST'S in the Bute area. The earliest one I know of was JOHN GILCHRIST who had 4 sons I think (I don't know of any daughters): William, Donald, Robert and Patrick. William's son Donald purchased or built the House of Northbarr near Glasgow in 1676. The earlier Donald was a sheriff depute, notary and chief clerk of Buteshire. He married Elizabeth Boyd and had 2 sons that I know of: Donald and John. Donald was a Notary Public and Town Clerk at Rothsay in the mid 1600's. He married Phinguel Stewart. John was a sheriff clerk of Bute in the 1630's and Town Clerk of Rothsay in 1649. He was also a Notary. I don't have any information about Robert or Patrick. I'd love to learn any more about this family or any other Gilchrist's from Bute. Are there any on-lines sites that would give me more info? Regards Lori Australia
