    1. [BUT] Murchie Vs Murphy
    2. Peter Cook
    3. The "Book of Arran" (Vol 2) is almost unhelpful on this topic ... "Some at least of the Murchies were Murphys in original; on a Kilmorie tombstone the erector is afterwards recorded as being buried, and his name is in one case Murphy, in the other Murchie, the latter after he was dead." The seven Murchie/Murphy entries for Kilmorie in "Pre - 1855 Gravestone Inscriptions in Bute and Arran" throw no more light on the date. Murphie 1819 (changed from Murchie to Murphie) Murphy 1829 Murchie 1829, 1844, 1864, 1866 Murphy 1873 (This one is changed from Murchy to Murphy) One possible explanation for the change, is the proximity to Ireland where "Murphy" is prevalent; the other more likely explanation is related to the educational background of whoever was recording the names in the registers. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SeC.2ACI/554 Message Board Post: I am searching for information on Colonel Stuart (first name not known) who was born about 1690, had two sons and went to England. He was supposed to have been a cadet of the Stuart of Bute family and later in his career may have been Governor of Hurst Castle in Hantshire, England. One of his sons, Robert Stuart (my ancestor) became a shipwright at the Royal Dockyard in Woolwich, Kent, England. The other son married into a family in Shropshire, England. Any information on Colonel Stuart or his son who went to Shropshire would be greatly appreciated.

    3. No new members this week. Your list hosts noticed a 'blanket' single surname request posted earlier this week. This type of post is often counter productive, and we DO NOT encourage subscribers to resort to this method. If one has not had any luck with a detailed request to this list, please remember that this is only a small geographical area list with an equally small (but loyal) group of subscribers, so a better response may be obtained from the specific surname list (but NOT if the same 'blanket' approach is used). As always, if you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon - the notes below may help ... ****** ****** ****** Apart from requests for the odd look up, or to see if anyone else is researching the same family, there are numerous topics - directly related to family history and the islands which make up pre 1974 Buteshire - which are open to List discussion. Topics such as civil registration & parish registers (or lack of - either/both registers and registration), non conformist churches (and their records), apprenticeships, how census were conducted, why some Buteshire towns/villages/farms prospered (or not), modes of travel , militia/ naval service, activities around the Islands i.e on the water, naming conventions, etc, etc, etc.- the possibilities are almost endless. These topics will be of interest to many Listers, as they help to add meat to the bare bones of names & dates. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 3. Welcome to Phil Young who has joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** OK, the question last week was "What relation to me is my grand daughter's mother's mother-in-law" Solution 1 if the question is posed by a male and the grand daughter's mother is not his daughter, then the answer is "wife" 2 if the question is posed by a female and the grand daughter's mother is not her daughter, then the answer is "self" 3 irrespective of gender of questioner, if the grand daughter's mother is their daughter, then "no relation" FWIW the quiz answer was given as #3 So while we can sure of true blood relationships that go back to a common ancestor, then forward in time, we must be a lot more careful with any that jump forward to a common descendent then back in time. Nieces and nephews are another example of this need for caution - as they are often found as the informant in death entries, or as being resident during a census - but if the surname differs, which side are/were they on ? Can you give any interesting relationships from among your Bute ancestors? ****** ****** ****** NB - I haven't had time to visit this site, but there may be something there for you ... 3. Hello Edward, In the Preface to the book: While the impressions of the Great War are still fresh in the memories of those who have lived through the eventful time, it seems fitting that some permanent record should be made of these impressions. It is also due to the memory of the men who have gone through the great ordeal, to preserve a record of their services, particularly of those who have made the supreme sacrifice--"They went forth to the battle and never came back." Knowing the greater number of the lads personally, this compilation has been a work of pleasure; but I regret that in all cases I did not succeed in obtaining as many particulars as I would have liked, so that where details are somewhat meagre, it is not due to lack of effort., THE AUTHOR [James C. Inglis] Invbercloy, Brodick, 29th March 1919 The Introduction to the books tells about the Island (Arran) during the war, then goes on to list the servicemen and women.....some with more detail than others. I have just done a search of Abebooks http://www.abebooks.co.uk/ and found that it was reprinted in 2002 and available from bookshops in Sussex and Surrey :-) There is also a better description of it. Cheers, Ruth Adelaide, South Australia ----- Original Message ----- Would it be possible to explian a little more on the background and title of the book please? It seems very interesting and thank you for posting it. edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton SystemWorks

    3. Welcome back to Judy Finley, and a Happy New Year to all. ****** ****** ****** At this time of the year quizzes, puzzles etc appear in the media to keep us entertained. A recent genealogy quiz on relationships posed five questions, each starting with the phrase "What relation to me is ..." The first four were reasonably easy, however the fifth one continued: "... my grand-daughter's mother's mother-in-law" The given single solution generated some immediate "but what about ..." responses, so can you identify all the possibilities? No prizes, however I will give the full solution next week. ****** ****** ****** Here's the index for these postings for the last 6 months of 2003 ... #204 Index to first 6 months of 2003 #205 FreeCEN availability - Photography in RO's #206 'Audrey' warning - topics for discussion #207 Virus reminder | Archive CD Books Copyright #208 Interpretation of records - Indexer and Enumerator errors #209 19th century reading material #210 19th century clothing #211 19th century clothing - a response #212 Virus warnings - a cautionary tale #213 UK Schools History website update #214 Latest Scotland release from Archive CD Books #215 IGI - still need to consult original for dubious entries #216 Happy 5th Birthday (posted 29 Sept) #217 ' Census mini-essays by the "Dividers" ' #218 More on the above 'mini-essays' #219 RootsWeb problems - Archive address for catchup #220 Buteshire ED descriptions update #221 Scottish repositories - update #222 A response on Scottish Repositories #223 Pre festive season Anti-virus reminder #224 AncestorStuff - book site #225 Research in the UK / List Admin - AV problem some ISP's #226 Census Ages / List Admin - Spam Blocking #227 Census Dates #228 Happy Christmas #229 Buried Treasures at RootsWeb: Mining the Mailing Lists Archives ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 3. Oops, running a little late today, never-the-less, welcome back to Jean Reynolds, and to Stewart Gillies who have rejoined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** If you're thinking of having a truly merry time this Hogmanay, then don't drive, we'd like to have you back next year; and may your new year's resolutions be the kind that either come to fruition or don't matter if they are broken. ****** ****** ****** With Christmas over, and New Year fast approaching, this short article (previously published in RootsWeb Review, 9 Oct 2002) "Buried Treasures at RootsWeb: Mining the Mailing Lists Archives" - will, I hope, provide some holiday reading ... ------------------------------------------------------------ "The RootsWeb Mailing Lists archives contain the content of years of discussion that have been carried on among researchers of the subject matter of these various Mailing Lists. Thus buried in these archives could be some treasures that might benefit you in your quest to learn more about your ancestors. Someone at another time -- perhaps years ago -- might have posted just the information you seek today. Because the Mailing Lists archives' content is not included in the metasearch results when you type in a surname on the main RootsWeb page, a specialized search to find the treasures in the Mailing Lists archives must be conducted. Such searches may result in finding some sparkling gems pertaining to your genealogy that you will not discover elsewhere. The archives of the individual Mailing Lists are both browseable and searchable from two separate RootsWeb archives. Most Mailing Lists at RootsWeb are archived. The Threaded (browseable) Archives is at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and the Interactive Search (searchable archives) is located here: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Both of these links -- Interactive Search and Threaded Archives can also be found under the Mailing List section on RootsWeb's Home Page: http://www.rootsweb.com/ In the Threaded Archives, responses to an original message are displayed attached to the message to which they are replying in an outline format with responses indented from the original message. Thus you can follow an entire subject of discussion by tracing through a thread of messages in the archives. Browsing the Threaded Archives also benefits new Mailing List subscribers who may want to get a feel for the list before posting to it or wish to check out whether their ancestors have previously been discussed. It also aids current Mailing List members by enabling them to check messages they might have missed while on vacation, during e-mail delivery problems, or because of a computer crash. Starting at the Threaded Archives http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ type in the Mailing List name of your choice to access an index page showing each month and year included in that particular list's archives. View an outline of the subjects of all messages posted to the Mailing List within a given month (including the poster's name and date posted, if desired) in either threaded (the default) or chronological order. Click on a subject of interest to view the full text of the message. The Interactive Search located here: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl allows you to search a single Mailing List one year at a time by marking the appropriate radio button. (Radio buttons are round circles which represent choices within an list of options on a form.) Select a keyword, name, or phrase to obtain results matching your search criteria. The Interactive Search supports some Boolean operators (AND, OR, ANDNOT) to help you establish the most effective searches to suit your needs. Boolean expressions are used extensively by Internet search engines. By default, your searches will include every field in a message, but you may narrow down your results by specifying that you want your search to apply only to matches in a specific field. In the following examples all Boolean operators are shown in capital letters while all search criteria are shown lowercase. This is for explanatory purposes only -- as both are case insensitive. You may search for john OR smith by using the OR operator. You will obtain all messages containing either the word John or Smith. However, if you search on "john smith" or john+smith the results will only yield instances where the words John and Smith appear in that exact sequence. The use of quotes or a plus sign creates a complete phrase. Searching for john AND smith (using the AND operator), or john smith (with a single space separating John and Smith) will yield results where John and Smith appear somewhere in the message, but not necessarily side-by-side. The ANDNOT operator may also be used as follows: john ANDNOT smith which would yield all messages where the word John was found unless the message also included the word Smith. Grouping search criteria and the applicable operators within parentheses will permit more complex searches. For example, (sarah AND jones) OR (john AND smith) will yield results where Sarah AND Jones OR John AND Smith appear somewhere in a message but the words are not necessarily side-by-side. Searching on a specific message field, such as searching for all messages posted to a list by a specific poster during a year, is accomplished by typing in the search criteria: from/johndoe@anyisp.net Only the "from" field will be searched. If you are looking for a specific thread and you know the subject or partial subject you wish to locate, you may opt to search the "subject" field only, as follows: subject/"john smith in ohio" -- note that double quotation marks are used to tie the entire phrase together when you are searching for more than a single word. The phrase in quotation marks must match the subject, or a portion of the subject, exactly to return a hit. You may search for all messages posted on a given day without specifying a field but you must use quotation marks to tie the phrase together. For example: "02 may 2002" will get all messages posted on May 2, 2002 and "22 may 2002" will get all messages posted on May 22, 2002. Searching on "may 2002" will yield all messages posted within the month of May 2002, and searching on 2001 will result in getting all messages posted to the list for the entire year. Interactive list searches support trailing wildcards only (wildcards coming at the end of a word). Use an asterisk * to represent zero or more unknown or variable letters at the end of a word after you have specified a minimum of at least the first letter. Interactive list searches work on whole words and not strings of letters. In other words, if you search for john and a message includes johnson it won't come up in your results -- but if you search on john* it will. One benefit of the searches applying to words rather than strings of letters is that a search on sy will pick up the given name or surname Sy but will not yield words which include the string "sy" such as the word "easy". Exploring the Mailing Lists Threaded Archives and using the Interactive Search capabilities in creative ways may reward you with some previously buried genealogical treasures." ------------------------------------------------------------ See Musings #219 for ButeshireGenWeb-L direct access addresses to the Archives ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items.
