    3. Hello Andrew, Mount Stuart (The Marquess of Bute's Estate) has opened to the public. You might try to find it on the Internet or you can email them at: contactus@mountstuart.com. One of the past Marquess' was a botanist who traveled the world collecting specimens, transporting them to Bute and planting them on his grounds. Their gardens are quite something (as is the house itself). 1. Re: [BUT] Sunday morning musings #234 + Beggars' badges
    2. Hello everyone, Peter's mention of the lack of opportunity for door-to-door con merchants in Bute made me think of one measure taken to thwart them - badges issued to worthy beggars. Even these badges, it seems, sometimes passed into "unauthorised hands". An article in the Buteshire Natural History Society Transactions for 1945 explains how Kirk Sessions were in the habit of giving badges or tokens to deserving poor persons to entitle them to eke out their living by begging. "The law was very severe in its punishment of able-bodied beggars and vagabonds, but when badges or licences were granted to poor people by competent authorities these badge-bearers or licence-holders were allowed to beg with impunity." The article deals with beggars' badges issued by the Kirk Session of Rothesay. The first reference is found in a minute of 1827 (although badges or tokens of some sort must have been issued long before that date). "The Session taking into consideration the extent to which begging is carried, and imposition on the respectable inhabitants by strangers from other quarters, did and hereby do unanimously resolve that each of the begging poor of the parish shall be furnished at the expense of the Parish Session with a badge regularly numbered and the words "Rothesay Parish" to be inscribed on the same. Such badges to be produced when required and to be returned to the session on the death of the wearer." In 1827, 100 badges were struck, of which 60 were issued. They were round discs of a base metal alloy, 21/2ins in diameter and 1/2 ins thick. "The badge was a valuable privilege: it represented a considerable yearly income. We are not surprised to learn that although they were 'not transferable' they sometime passed by various means into unauthorised hands." The article includes a tribute to the badge wearers. "...these licensed beggars were, many of them, great worthies. They did exceedingly well for themselves, and often lived much better that some of those from whom they extracted sympathetic contributions. As might be imagined, their trade gave them a ready tongue; they were masters of repartee, talkative and facetious. When they toured the landward part of the parish, they were expected to give something more than an exposition of their distress. They had to bring news and entertain by their conversation, and indeed had many of the attributes and privileges of the jester of ancient days ...... "Of course, there were sad stories too - stories of dire distress and need, of poverty bitterly and reluctantly submitted to, and the unwilling donning of this last symbol of Christian charity. Many a weary and heavy heart would beat beneath the beggar's badge." No names given for beggars - just the mention of Widow A "originally belonging to the county of Ross"; Grace M "widow of a deceased seaman", Widow C etc. However, the names of parish worthies involved in issuing the badges, mentioned in passing, include James MUIR, Robert STEWART, senior, Robert FISHER, John GILLIES, Bailie McINDOE, William McKIRDY, Archibald McKIRDY and Dugald MUNN. All info from The Rothesay Beggars Badges by the Rev James Hay Hamilton, Buteshire Natural History Society Transactions 1945, Madeleine Wales In a message dated 01/02/2004 04:28:34 GMT Standard Time, cookfmly@bigpond.com writes: > I doubt if our Bute ancestors were much > troubled in their time by the equivalent - door to door Con merchants, > as being comprised of islands Bute provided some security against > quick departure from the area ! > Or can someone show this is an incorrect assumption on my part ? 2. Peter Cook
    3. No new subscribers this week, although a number of AOL members have switched to other ISP accounts ! (see below). If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** As Ian pointed out in his OT (off topic) post, do be wary of scams by phone; and I'll add - also be wary of those oh so plausible scams on the Internet. To bring it on topic <G>, I doubt if our Bute ancestors were much troubled in their time by the equivalent - door to door Con merchants, as being comprised of islands Bute provided some security against quick departure from the area ! Or can someone show this is an incorrect assumption on my part ? To half answer myself - possibly in Rothesay town? Has anything on this topic been seen by researchers scanning old copies of "The Buteman" ? ****** ****** ****** Next a necessary batch of List Admin items to cope with recent events: With the recent splurge of Viruses and Worms, again a reminder - DO NOT open unsolicited attachments. DO invest in anti-virus software, and keep it up to date. DO make sure the subject is meaningful to the recipient. ------ ------ ------ List mail problems 1: Specifically re AOL problems: RootsWeb did change the internet address of one of its Server's last week - this caused the problems for AOL subscribers where all RootsWeb mail to AOL was bounced. RootsWeb staff did request that the new server ID be placed on AOL's "whitelist". The status of that request is covered in more detail at the RootsWeb Helpdesk. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ Please note that the bulk of the alleged RootsWeb mail which is causing AOL subscribers to press their "report spam" button and thus get the RootsWeb mail "banned", is Virus generated spam with false Senders Addresses and/or Subjects. This part of the problem is linked to AOL placing of RootsWeb on their "whitelist", and has, at my last check, NOT yet been resolved. {Consequently those affected, who are not using an alternative account, will have to catch this via the archives} ------ ------ ------ List mail Problems 2: Generic - the 3 possible causes: 1) Your mail box is full, or your ISP has a system fault of some sort of a couple of days duration. Either way, incoming mail is bounced, so RootsWeb's mail robot in turn unsubscribes you. List Admin's do receive copies of bounced mail, but for the obvious reason, can't advise the subscriber. One easy check for the status of your ButeshireGenWeb subscription is non receipt of this regular Sunday post. {There is one other possibility here, and that is that the subscriber has changed their ISP and forgotten to change the subscription address! } If you think you have been bounced off, try resubscribing. If you are still subscribed, you will be told so and no further action is taken by the RootsWeb mail robot, otherwise you will be resubscribed and the default welcome message sent out. In this case you can catch up with missed items via the archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ButeshireGenWeb-L/ 2) If the resubscribe attempt says you are OK, perhaps your ISP has minor problems such that it's holding list mail back, rather than bouncing it. In that case you'll get it in a day or two. If you haven't had a message from your ISP, check their Service Status web-page. 3) If its not a problem at your ISP, then possibly the mail isn't getting out from RootsWeb due to system issues, or they know particular ISPs are not accepting RootsWeb mail. Refer to RootsWeb's Help Desk for updates - see the AOL notes above, for the link. Finally, you can always contact your list admin - for any list (replace LISTNAME as appropriate) at LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com . ****** ****** ****** Finally, let's see who reads right to the bottom - in an attempt to get some more regular contributions - the theme for February is "Unusual stories from old newspapers about Bute or about my Buteshire Ancestors"; and to give you time to think about it, for March try coming up with "Who, out of all your Buteshire ancestors, would you invite to dinner today ?" Suggestions for future monthly themes welcomed, and as usual, feel free to join in and present your own items. 2. Ian Murray
    3. I don't usually write this sort of thing, but this sounds worth repeating. Currently UK only and telephone based. You get a phone call from Access/Mastercard or Visa Fraud dept. telling you that they have found someone is using your card fraudulently. After some speel they ask you to tell them the 3 security digits on the back of the card, the new extra ones put on for internet transactions. This is to prove that you currently have the card and it hasn't been stolen. Guess what the correct Fraud dept. don't ask you for anything like numbers from your card - it's a scam, put phone down. No website or telephone caller needs to know. 1. [BUT] New Member interests - HAMILTON & GALBRAITH, Kilmore, Arran
    2. Sarah Galbraith
    3. I'm a new member of this list, and thought I would just post here my current interests in Bute. Most of my connections are in Kintyre, Argyll, and there was much 19th century travel between the two areas. However, my current research is concentrated on the family of an Elizabeth HAMILTON (about 1811 - ?) from Arran who married a seaman and coastguard named Neil GALBRAITH (1812 - before 1859) from Campbeltown. By 1835, Neil and Elizabeth were in the coastguard station near Sandwich, Kent, England, where they had a daughter named Flora. Neil was later dismissed from the service, and in 1841 we find his wife and children back in Arran as follows: Piece: SCT1841/553 Place: Kilbride & Lochranza-Bute Enumeration District: 5 Civil Parish: Kilbride Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -Folio: 5 Page: 15 Address: Lamlash Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks GALBRAITH Elizabeth F 30 Housekeeper Bute GALBRAITH John M 7 (Son) Bute GALBRAITH Flora F 5 (Daughter) Bute [actually Kent, England] HAMILTON Margt F 25 (Sister) Bute There was no trace of Neil GALBRAITH - and indeed I have found no trace of him after 1835. My questions are as follows: Does anyone know who this Elizabeth HAMILTON might be? I have no knowledge of her parents, but perhaps the listing here of a sister Margaret who is about five years younger might help to separate her from the many other people of this name. Does anyone have access to the 1851 and/or 1861 census who could check if the family are still in the same location. (I would not expect anyone to check through the whole census!) Does anyone have access to post 1855-graveyard listings where I might find anything more about Elizabeth? She died some time after her daughter's marriage in Dunoon, Argyll in 1858. Thanks in advance for any help. If a member of this list should be relate to Elizabeth, I can exchange information about her many descendants. Regards Sarah Galbraith Cheshire
