Hi All, Thought it was time to give a progress report on the 1851 census transcription for Bute. Transcribing is now 85% complete and 35% of the county is now available on-line at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ The parts done are the parishes of Kilmory, Lochranza and EDs 9-16 of Rothesay burgh. The description of the area covered by these pieces can be found at; http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~buteshire1841/index.htm Another 50% of the county is currently being checked or waiting to be done. This has all been done in about 8 months which is quite an achievement by a small team of volunteers. We are always looking for additional helpers so if you have access to a fiche reader and a bit of spare time, I'd be delighted to hear from you. It certainly would lighten the load, particularly if we are going to do further censuses. The county population was steadily growing through the 19th century and each one is bigger than the last. Happy hunting Bill McKinlay FreeCen coordinator for Bute and Ayr
Well done and thanks to Bill and the other volunteers - a marvellous result! edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton SystemWorks

Heather I had a quick look for this family, as I thought that Matthew SOMMERVILLE might have been a distant relative of mine, but this turns out to be a different Matthew SOMMERVILLE. Your Matthew SOMMERVILLE died at Vulcan Cottage, Millport, Cumbrae, Buteshire, on 24 Jan 1890 at the age of 61. His death certificate records his parents as Thomas SOMMERVILLE, a Farmer, and Christina McLARTY. His widow, Agnes BUNTAIN, died at the same address (with the addition of the words "Glasgow Street") on 29 Oct 1916 at the age of 83. Unfortunately (and unusually) her death certificate does not name her parents, except to confirm her father's surname. Hope this helps. Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at research@veale.com.au before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. Edward Thanks for this suggestion, which is similar to one sent to me by someone else off-list, and therefore I am replying similarly. You may be right, but it's strange that the "false memories" were so precise (and wrong) about the dates - five times. It's almost as if a second unrelated set of dates was written down correctly for a different purpose and then mixed up with the first one. Thanks for your interest. Martyn ----- Original Message ----- From: Epaxton@aol.com To: martyntaylor@msn.com ; ButeshireGenWeb-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, April 25, 2004 7:19 PM Subject: Re: [BUT] Erroneous MALCOM gravestone in North Bute I would suspect that the gravestone was erected by the children who died in the 1940/1960's who went on memory, or family lore, which was simply in error. The family may have been unable to afford a gravestone before this period. Many graves were simply marked by wooden crosses which rotted away.
I would appreciate thoughts on the following gravestone in the North Bute churchyard, concerning a single family, in which five (out of eight) of the dates of death are totally erroneous. The inscription (a very clear one) reads as follows (the asterisks have been added by me and are explained below): ~~~ Inscription begins ~~~ In memory of Archibald MALCOM died 18 June 1885* and his wife Jean Boyd MALCOM died 15 June 1919* Their family: Margaret died 6 April 1873* Jean died 14 October 1877* John died 17 January 1888* Mary died 14 March 1948 Gilbert died 6 February 1962 Annie died 24 April 1966 ~~~ Inscription ends ~~~ This family is well known to me, being well documented by birth certificates and census returns. The first two are the parents of the other six, the children being all unmarried (three married children and one other are omitted). My problem is that the dates marked with an asterisk are unsupported by the ScotlandsPeople site and proved after long investigation to be totally fictitious. The actual places and dates of death of these five were: Archibald, Lochgilphead, 31 Mar 1883; Jean (the mother), Port Bannatyne, 29 Jun 1920; Margaret, Port Bannatyne, 28 Jun 1881; Jean (the daughter), Port Bannatyne, 21 Mar 1882; John, Port Bannatyne, 13 Jun 1871. Archibald, a local boat hirer, died in the Argyll & Bute District Asylum, and I toyed with the thought that the earlier dates of death were supplied by him, at a time when he was mentally impaired. However, that does not seem very likely, as his own date of death is one of the erroneous ones, and two others postdate it. My questions are these: 1 Does anyone have a plausible explanation why five of these dates should be so completely wrong? - this is not just a matter of a few misread figures, the errors seem to be completely random. 2 Has anyone found similar mistakes elsewhere? 3 Is there any way of discovering when the gravestone was erected, and who paid for it? 4 Is there any authority that can or should be notified of this, to avoid misleading others?
I would suspect that the gravestone was erected by the children who died in the 1940/1960's who went on memory, or family lore, which was simply in error. I have just joined the group, but have been having some problems with receiving the digests. I'm hoping that has now been sorted. I have some notes written by my wife's great-great-grandfather, Peter Mayor CAMPBELL who was born in 1838 in Stevenston, Ayr. In these notes he says his mother was born on the Isle of Arran, though her brother and her father seem to come from Coatbridge way. So I would be interested if anyone has come across the MAYOR name (sometimes MEIR) around the 1800 period. I thin Mary MAYOR may have been the daughter of Peter MAYOR and Ann MUNN. John -- John Rouse
