    3. I seem to remember a recent posting to either the Argyll or the Bute list with suggested wording that family historians might include in their wills about the preservation after their deaths of their family history material. Can anyone remind me when and where this appeared, please? Apologies to those on whichever list this enquiry does not apply to, and to those like me who are on both lists and will get it twice. 3. I hate to see Peter disappointed (!?), so, even though I haven't been to Bute since 2002, we leave on the 25th of May for 3 1/2 weeks in Scotland, the first week of which will be on Bute. Plans are in the works to exhibit my grandfather's photos of early Bute and the Bute (Mountain) Battery from World War One in the Bute Discovery Centre and/or the Bute Museum. Hopefully, The Buteman will help us out with a little public notice. Their publication of 2 of the photos with a little supporting text and the assistance of some fine local folks has enabled us to locate several descendants of the men of this uniquely Highland Artillery unit. Some good stories and further identifications of the people in these photos have ensued and I hope to add to them. I have plans to see a good many friends I met on my last trip and since. I'll report when we return in mid June. Does anybody out there have ancestors who served in either The Argyll & Bute Volunteer Artillery (pre-1908) or one of the batteries of the 4th Highland (Mountain) Brigade (The Argyll, The Bute or The Ross & Cromarty (Mountain) Batteries) from 1908 through The Great War and into the 1920's? Please let me know. Mike Morrison

    3. Thanks Yvonne, Unfortunately I have no further information on any children apart from those I mentioned originally. John b. app 1819, Margaret b. 1820 and 'unnamed' b 1849. Oddly enough I have followed Margaret's downward spiral through various odd sources, including a poor law application and the receipt for her burial in the family plot. That's why suspected that the 'late arrival' was possibly hers. She had another one about 1850. Looking at the addresses she lived in in the 18870-1880 period - they are still some of the most awful places in our fair city. Ross

    3. Hi Ross, There are a couple of possibilities on the OPR index. What may assist are the names of Archibald & Margaret's children ... in order of appearance. Bonnie B. Subject: McKIRDY Having read the list entries for a few months I felt it was time to get involved. My Bute connection is a bit tenuous. Family tradition always stated " they came from Bute orginally" but by the time I started on family history, I was 62 and there was nobody left to ask. However, I finally located [almost] our Buteman. My GGGgrandfather Archibald McKirdy born about 1790-1795 on Bute, and married to Margaret McDougall in Glasgow on 15/12/1815. A few snippets show him living in 1. Grahamstown, the legendary village under Glasgow's Central Station, when daughter Margaret was born c1820. 2. North Woodside Road, Glasgow, when he purchased 2 plots in the Southern Necropolis, in June 1845 - I still have the deeds. 3. Oakbank, Glasgow, in the burial record on 'unnamed McKirdy' b.and d. on 29/03/1849. Although he and Margaret are shown as parents, 'I hae ma doots' He does not appear in the 1851 Census index as far as I can see, and as some of the Southern Necropolis records from around that time are in poor condition he may already be in there. My mother's family are descended via his son John, who was born in Glasgow on 30/03/1819, and married an Ann Vance of Maybole in Gorbals on 16/07/1841. I have identified 12 children so far, but only 2 reaching adulthood and the repetition of given names suggests a worse than average infant mortality rate. Robert McKirdy [1852-1908], the known surviving son married a Margaret Miller in 1876. Their luck with offspring continued, 3 died young, John [1885-1917] died at Ieper, but my grandfather Archibald made it to 87,however both produced daughters and the male line fizzled out. An Australian contact last year suggested that he might have been the son of a Robert McKirdy schoolmaster at Birgiedale Crieff but added that he had just sold his house and would be 'a nomad for a year' - honest !! Independently I found the same names at Quochag Muir about the same time so it's possible -- Over to your listers. Ross Holmes [ Glasgow ] ______________________________

    1. visit to Arran from Ontario Canada
    2. Heather
    3. My ancestors were cleared off Arran in 1829 and came to Inverness Quebec on the ship the Caledonia. My ggg grandfather was Neil Macmillan and my ggg grandmother was Catherine Kerr. They lived in South Sannox with there children. I have had the opportunity to visit Arran twice. I went to Arran in Sept 2000 with my mom. I planned ahead, researching as much as I could about Arran and wrote to the Banner newspaper about my ancestors and my upcoming visit. I received several replies and even set a date to meet with Grace Small from the Heritage Museum. We had a great time while on Arran, visiting the cemetery and Church in Sannox, the standing Stones , the monument in Lamlash and talking with as many residences as possible. Everyone was very friendly. We did not have a car, used local transit and sometimes received a ride from locals and the mail truck. On my second visit I returned with my husband in May 2003, met up with Grace again and was pleased to see that there was a special section in the Museum about the clearances. We had a car this time, and made a few trips around the entire island, visiting the monument in Lamlash and seeing the standing stones again. We also climbed up to see where my ancestors ruins were in south Sannox( High Corrie). The island is so beautiful, the scenery is amazing, and I hope to return again someday. Heather

    1. My Visit to Arran
    2. Hello List In May 2001 at the height of the Foot & Mouth epidemic we spent a week on the Isle of Arran. My maternal grandmother and her maternal ancestors came from Arran but it was 40 years since I had visited the island. The weather was glorious and we had a wonderful time despite the restrictions because of the Foot & Mouth epidemic. On the Wednesday I visited the Arran Heritage Museum and when I told them that I had ancestors from the island I was taken to the Family History Centre and introduced to the volunteers. Grace Small there gave me all kinds of advice and when I showed her my family tree she gave me the name, address and phone number of a local resident, who she said had researched his family tree way back and had the same surname as one of my ancestors, Watt. I told her that these Watts had come from Ireland and had married into the Hyndman family from Arran. I didn’t think that there were any Watts from my line left on the island as my grandmother’s father, Robert Watt had returned to lasgow, where the rest of his family lived, after my great grandmother’ s death. Anyway, I took a note of the details but did not contact the person. About 6 months later whilst doing some research at New Register House in Edinburgh I found the death certificate for my grandmother’s brother, who I thought had died young but he hadn’t died until 1949, and his death was registered by his son. The name seemed familiar and when I looked up the telephone directory for Arran to see if this person was listed the address also seemed familiar. I immediately looked for the notebook I had taken to Arran and when I checked the details that Grace Small had given me it was the same person that I had found in the telephone directory. I wrote a letter to the person and included my email address. If this was the correct person he would be my mother’s cousin. The next day I received a very friendly email from his daughter who had been visiting her father when my letter arrived. We’ve kept in touch by emil and have since met a few times and I’ve visited her father who did turn out to be my mother’s cousin. I haven’t discovered any more about my ancestors in Arran through this relationship but I have added more branches and leaves and met some very nice relatives that I didn’t know I had. My husband and I were invited to her daughter’s wedding and met other members of the family there. We’ve since spent another couple of holidays on the island and thoroughly enjoy it. I’m only sorry that I didn’t visit it in the 40 preceding years. The people at the Museum are very friendly and helpful so if you are going to Arran do get in touch with Grace Small as I’m sure she’ll help you all she can. Her email address and other information can be found at _http://www.arranmuseum.co.uk/_ (http://www.arranmuseum.co.uk/) . Also talk to the locals as they are very keen to pass on information about the island. The local bookshops and the museum also stock more books on the island than you’ll find anywhere else. The cemetery at Kilmory is also worth a visit. It’s in a beautiful location and it’s always very tranquil there.
