Good Morning, There is a 2nd child born to John & Isabella in 1849 in Rothesay. Was the Census an index or the full entry? If index, it could be a miss translation. Why not buy her marriage certificate which would give you the answer? This is your primary proof to finding her parents. Don't forget that the Wee Free was active & many of these entries are not on the OPR's nor the IGI. Usually John & James aren't interchangeable. Bonnie B. To help find your ancestors - go to: Archive CD Books : http://www.archivecdbooks.org British-Genealogy: http://www.british-genealogy.com Can anyone help me? I have a Ann Anderson, age 14, born Arran, Isle of Bute shown in the 1861 census for Glasgow, Tradeston. Adults are shown as James Anderson & Isabel (Strahan). From there I would presume that these were Ann's parents. BUT, now I have found on the IGI Ann b. Sept. 22, 1846, Kilbride, Bute, with parents John Anderson & Isabella Strachan. Could John & James be the same, OR?? Thanks in advance. ______________________________

Settled in Wilkinson County, Georgia circa 1805. I am also looking for a George McCook b. abt. 1752 who settled in Pennsylvania circa 1780. (this George McCook had sons who settled in Ohio). Some have these two linked as brothers but I have yet to find documentation for the sibling link. I found your message regarding John McCook and possible brothers James Daniel and George and thought perhaps you may have found further information. My George McCook b. abt. 1752 came to America from County Antrim, Ireland. I don't know for sure where he was born. He married Mary McCormick(McCormack). It is thought that Mary was from Glasgow Scotland. I do have a lot of info on both James Daniel McCook(1751) and George McCook(abt. 1752) and their families in America but have yet to find anything before 1780 in either Ireland or Scotland. So, if you have found any further info or think that perhaps these McCook men might link to your line, let me know. I am always hoping to find new contacts:) Thanks Linda McCook in Florida I am not subscribed to the mailing list so please respond to this message board or contact me directly. Thanks:)
Hi, Apologies if this is a stupid question but, just when was it that tenant farmers on Arran (or anyone else for that matter) were able to actually purchase land.? Does anyone know? Linda

Kilbride is a parish on the eastern side of the island of Arran, which is part of the county called Bute - also the name of the most northern island in the county. If Ann was born in 1846 this is before stat. registration so her birth entry is not a certificate just the baptism entry from the OPR ..I'm not sure whether Scotlandspeople have these images online yet. There is no Ann Anderson in the 1851 index for Buteshire and none with a mother called Isabella in the 1851 Glasgow index.

Arran is a larger island not far from Bute. You might want to look into that a bit further because she could not have been born on both islands. Also try www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to find out if there is an Ann Anderson born on the Isle of Arran about the time frame you are looking at. It will cost a little bit of money but worth trying. Welcome to Ian H. Grant, 'Lassience', & Margo who have joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** I started off this months topic "Indexes or other publications on Microfilm, Microfiche or CD-ROM, or Websites that you have found helpful to your Buteshire &/or Scottish research." with a couple of general Buteshire items. Linda then gave the Arran researchers amongst us the pointer to the Lamlash Registrars office - no doubt when Linda finds her notes, she will pass on the contact details :-) So now its time for Bute and Cumbrae researchers to redress the balance! Don't forget the website that goes with this list http://www.rootsweb.com/sctbutes/ - contributions or suggestions for its improvement are always welcome. ****** ****** ****** List Admin: This was posted on the RootsWeb HelpDesk (15 July): "Delivery of mail to fsnet.co.uk / freeserve.co.uk RootsWeb is having issues delivering email to the UK ISP, Freeserve, due to what looks like busy mail servers at Freeserve. As RootsWeb tries to deliver mail to that network, their mail servers defer delivery to a later time, which may not come, and then the mail will bounce after several days. Update: Problem still ongoing." Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SeC.2ACI/582 Message Board Post: Hello everyone, I’m sending this message again because there seems to have been a ‘glitch’ in communications on Friday. I am delighted to announce the start of the Scotland part of the FreeGEN project. This is part of the wider FreeGEN project, incorporating FreeBMD and FreeCEN. The FreeGEN part aims to transcribe the Old Parish Registers – those dating from the 1500/1600s before formal state registration began. At the moment I am primarily looking for people who would like to co-ordinate the transcriptions for a county. You would need a microfiche/film reader, lots of patience and a sense of humour. You would recruit volunteers and keep note of what is sent out and sent back. If you want to know more you can email me off list, or look at the Website for this at: http://freereg.rootsweb.com (got it right this time!) If you don’t want to look after a county, but would like to be put on the list of volunteers for a particular place, then I will be happy to take your details. It will be a few weeks before all of this gets going properly, so watch this space for more information. All the best, Anne Fish
I feel a bit of a fraud on this list because I have no ancestors from Bute. My interest lies in the fact that I moved to Arran as a toddler, then went to Cumbrae five years later and from there to school in Rothesay on Bute. A few years ago when my own research seemed to have got as far as it was going (after 25 years) I thought I'd do a one parish study of Cumbrae (yes I know ....an addiction not a hobby..my husband is of the same opinion) So I got a fiche index of the 1851 census, (from Australia) printed it out and then added the details from the film by hand to the paper copy. I also got print outs of the IGI fiche index and then took notes from the OPR film. The idea was to take the families from the 1851 and use them as a basis for a database. But what happened? A trip to the PRO in London suddenly demolished a 15 year old brick wall in my own family tree and Cumbrae got put on the back burner. There just aren't enough hours in the day :-( Irene
Concerning this month's topic of sources that have been helpful in research, I think many have been discussed but nothing has been said about the census records! If they were mentioned then blame it on my memory. I have found the census records a treat to explore. Often other's in the household with different surnames are related and it provides new clues for exploration. People listed as servants in the household should not be ignored. Without the census, I would not have found out the occupation of many of the individuals and this adds life to the records. Many, many thanks to those working on making the census records available online! Another wonderful source has been the death records found at the Lamlash Registrar's office on Arran. These records are like gold and provide information of the person's spouse(s), occupation, cause and place of death, age at death along with the names of parents, the parents occupation, and often the names of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles (and where they live) that have registered the death. The Lamlash office charges L10 per hour to research. This cost may go down for additional hours but I do not have those notes in front of me. It was from the death record of Catherine McKenzie who was the wife of Duncan McKillop that I learned that there was a son, Angus McKillop, living at Shiskine at the time of her death in 1891. Peter, in a past correspondence, your wife mentioned a fictional? book that would give me some incite into the daily life of a Scottish peasant. I have misplaced her recommendation and would love to see it listed again. This time I will find and purchase. I am wondering if the book mentions the large jet black slugs encountered as the maiden walks the pathway from her home to church (grin). I have one further question .... what was the job of "boatman"? Many thanks to all who have contributed to my McKillop research on Arran. Linda Phillips
Hi Linda In the so called "Argyll" entry, the Parish reference is "554" in both cases - this is the parish of Kilmory, Arran, so you ARE on the correct list, Tormore is an Arran place name - between the farms of Drumadoon and Machrie on the central west coast to be precise, and a stone's throw or two from Shiskine. The 7 in each refers to ED 7, and is the same as the ED7 listed way back in 1841: "so much of the parish as lies between Blackwater and Iorsa Water" Hope someone can help you with the 1891 info. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SeC.2ACI/580 Message Board Post: Hello Listers, I am pleased to announce that the Scottish part of FreeREG is about to start. This is a sister (or brother!) project to FreeBMD and FreeCEN. FreeREG aims to produce quality transcriptions of the Old Parish Registers so that they can be searched, free, on the Internet. I am the Scotland co-ordinator and I am looking for people who would like to co-ordinate the distribution of film within a particular county and give support to volunteer transcribers. Only Angus and Fife have co-ordinators at present. We have the requisite permissions from GROS for this, and the Genealogical Society of Utah is kindly lending us the film. You will find the FreeREG site at www.freereg.rootsweb.com if you wish to read more about the project in general. If you would like to be a county co-ordinator, please get in touch with me at annef1@tiscali.co.uk . If you would simply like to transcribe, then please also get in touch and I will hold your names until we have a co-ordinator for the county of your choice. All the best, Anne Fish
If anyone has access to the 1891 census for Arran, I could use some help with a look up. I would like to see if Angus McKillop, age 37, is living with anyone in the Kilmory District. The numbers following the entry in the Scots Origin entry are 2-554-0-7-0-6. This will probably be Shiskine. There is another record for this Angus in the 1881 Census for Toremore, Kilmory, Argyll. FN0203564 554-0-7-0-10. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Just a note to say that it sounds like Mike Morrison had a more than wonderful trip to Bute. I wish I was there now to escape the horrid summer heat we have here in North Carolina. His report may inspire me to go looking for discount airfares. Linda Phillips (yes Peter, I know, go to the Argyll list!!! but I thought I would try here first since this is an Arran individual!)

I am Jacqueline McCurdy Robinson. McCurdy is my maiden name. I am a native of San Diego, California. My father was Archibald Joseph McCurdy, born Sitka, Kansas, 1919, died San Diego 1999. His father was William Oliver McCurdy, born in Kansas (I think); His father was Elmer Edward McCurdy, born in Indiana, died in Battle Creek, MI 1936; (not related to the Elmer McCurdy-the Wild West Bandit); his father was named McCurdy-born in Indiana too and his family to Indiana from Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, I do not have my gggrandfathers first name nor any other information yet. It is almost as if this particular line of the McCurdy's did not exist after a certain date. My ggrandmother was Amanda Jane Bolte, born in Virginia (now West Virginia); children were Charles, Harley, Harvey, and my grandfather William Oliver. I missed the all McCurdy/McKirdy/McKurdy reunion about 10 years ago on Bute and now I understand that Paul McCartney owns the Stewart Castle, is that correct? If so, are some of the records still in the castle? Are they available to the public? I join this mail group to learn more...will sit back and read...thank you all for letting me observe. If there is anyone out there who knows the whereabouts of a Marilyn McCurdy (and I don't have her married name) whose father was Harvey McCurdy, she now lives on the east coast of the United States, please have her contact me. She is our first cousin...all of our aunts and uncles are gone now, and all of the first cousins have lost touch with her...this includes all of William O's childrens children. Thanks.
