    1. [BUT] Re: Place Name of McCurdy ancestor
    2. Bill McKinlay
    3. Hi Sue, Nowadays it is a farm about a 1/2 mile south of Kingarth township on the road to Garroch Head, the southern end of the island. The current spelling is Largizean but it was spelt 7 different ways in the OPRs - I don't think it mattered to them greatly. In the 1750s it was likely to have been a farm settlement of several cottages clustered together as was common on the island. There were 19 births/baptisms recorded there between 1731 and 1770 to 11 different families - tenants, cottars and weavers - with birth dates overlapping so there were several families living there together over that period. Bill McK It is in the OPR of Kingarth, 1754. The entry says James son of Robert McCurdy, tennant of Lergyain. Can anyone tell me what Lergyain is? Thanks, Sue Marcus --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software.

    1. [BUT] Admin update - please read

    3. 1 Registration only mandatory for List admins/owners Further to my original message when RootsWeb mailing lists were re-activated under Mailman V3 ... Registration is optional for most subscribers - what registration does is allow the subscriber to manage all their list memberships in the one place. It also allows the subscriber to combine the list of memberships if they use (or have used) more than one email address. Also please note that the appearance of Green Advert Boxes on some of the RootsWeb pages is Ancestry related - RootsWeb lists and Query Boards remain free to use. Be aware that fees may be charged for some if not all of those services outside of RootsWeb. 2 List Archives Restoration of the old Archives for the lists has started, and those for this list were back to January 2012 at my last check. 3 Delays in Messages appearing in Lists At present the part of the system that bans attachments is broken, therefore until it is fixed, admins/owners need to approve all posts sent to the list. Being global, at some points of the 24 hour cycle the admins/owners will be sleeping, so the delay in approval may be hours rather than minutes. Thank you for your understanding. 4 Message footers Please remember to delete the now quite sizeable footer when replying to a message. Ancestry staff advise that all this information needs to be there so that list mail doesn’t get blacklisted. Regards Peter ButeshireGenWeb Admin/Owner

    3. It appears that certain settings in Mailman V3 have been locked, and not as yet freed up for admins to adjust. One of these is whether legitimate subscriber's posts are held or sent straight to the list - under V2.17 for our list, the latter applied. Currently however the former applies, consequently there may be a delay in releasing your posts to the list. If you don’t see your post within 24 hours, please send a ‘prod’ message to the admin address first, rather than repeating your post, thank you. Regards Peter ButeshireGenWeb Admin

    1. [BUT] McLeas of Rothesay and Bute
    2. Kyle MacLea
    3. Hi Buteshire Researchers Reposting my brickwall. I descend from John McLea b 1790 in Rothesay. I have some names (not in front of me) of likely ancestors of John and his wife Janet McKay son of Peter/Patrick McKay of Rothesay but the evidence I have for them is almost exclusively from the Rothesay OPRs which show McLeas going back to the earliest records in the 1690s. If anyone is researching the McLeas/MacLeas of Bute and/or has additional info on John or his family or the (somewhat famous/infamous) Rev Archibald MacLea of Rothesay, please contact me or post to the list! 1. [BUT] Admin message : Rootsweb Mailman Software update
    2. P & C Cook
    3. Welcome to the “ButeshireGenWeb" mailing list now running under Mailman V3 Posting to the list is unchanged - send your email to: As it may be a while before the old Archives are uploaded and available for searching, you may wish to repost your current Bute ‘brickwall’. ————————————————— If you haven’t done so already, under the updated Mailman system, in order to subscribe/unsubscribe, etc - all subscribers will need to use the link below and follow the guide to create an account - it requires a new password. This should be a once only step, no matter how many list subscriptions you have … This guide page includes a link to the "Sign Up" page. Please note the ‘exclusion’ statements in the guide, relating to what is available. I found it best to do the update with two browser windows open, so I could refer back to the guide/instructions. Note also that depending on the time of day, the email from Rootsweb for the confirmation process may come in immediately, or it may take quite a few minutes. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you have used more than one email address, then it appears you may be able to combine them under the one account … Go to "Account" under the dropdown list at your member name, then click on the "E-mail Addresses" tab. There is an “Add” option towards bottom of page. Caveat - this won’t work if you create separate accounts for individual e-mail addresses. ————————————————— To change your email address, to do a “Holiday turn off/turn back on" or to switch between Regular & Digest modes, click on the specific list name shown under “Mailman settings” from the drop-down, then the blue hyperlink “here” in the "Subscription / Unsubscription” section. ————————————————— To manage your account in future after logging out, go to … and use the "‘Login" option You will need your password to change your options for any of the lists to which you subscribe. If you have forgotten your password you will need to click on the 'Forgot Password?' link on the login page. ————————————————— Finally, as Admin I can still, where necessary, assist with changes for the ButeshireGenWeb list.
