    3. Hello, Madeleine, I think homesick Scots just made a habit of naming the places they settled in after their places in Scotland. In South Island NZ you find Ben Lomond, Glenorchy, Kinloch etc all round Queenstown and lots of Scottish names right through Central Otago and Southland. We still do it today. My last home was called Badachro and present one is An Teallach. Best wishes, Mary H. in NZ

    1. Bute around the world
    2. Hello everyone, As someone whose ancestors tended to stay in Scotland (and who had their own struggles, successes and failures:-) I am nevertheless intrigued by the people who struck out and made a new life overseas. So I wonder about place names which were given the ring of home. I know, for example, that there is a Rothesay in New Brunswick, Canada, and a Rothesay Bay in New Zealand. Does anyone know the stories behind these? What are the other examples of Buteshire names around the world? Looking at early copies of The Buteman newspaper I came across an 1869 report (February 6) of natives of Bute in Australia gathering at Wombat Hill, Daleysford, to celebrate the coming of age of the Marquess of Bute. John Jamieson, of Mountstuart Farm, Franklingford, "late tenant of Scalpsie Farm, Bute" proposed the health of the Provost, magistrates and councillors of Rothesay. It was the end of the day and I didn't have time to make more notes, but I was struck by how emigrants named their farms after places at home (eg Mountstuart) and also by the fact that they still felt loyalty to the Bute family and Rothesay, Madeleine Wales

    3. Hello Bill, Thank you for the info. I will put it on file. I have been waiting to contact you until your "snail mail" arrived so I could say thank you, but it isn't here yet. I guess it is Easter! Or maybe they are just living up to their new name. Ninian Baxter is shown as born at Kilmachalmaig in 1764 but at his son's marriage in 1836 they are both shown as at Shalunt. Ninian was a weaver and Duncan a fisherman. If you happen to sight their records when in Scotland I would really appreciate it. Have a good trip. Rehards, Mary

    3. Hi Mary, In the extracts I have from the OPRs I came across the marriage of a Ninian Stewart, son of John Stewart, tenant in Kilmachalmaig. This was in April 1799. While I realise that this is not a relative, the date might be useful in delimiting the period that your family tenanted the property - either before or after. Cheers, Bill McK.

He lived in the Fishery Officers House in Grobsness in Shetland. Anyone ever heard of him? He called his only son Robert. >> You need to search more than the IGI ........ try the Scots Origins online site, or the LDS Scots Church records cd rom. Then if you still think Ninian son of Robert is yours, you need to research that record and make sure this Ninian did not grow up and marry someone else ..or, indeed, not grow up but die at the age of 6! Then trace the Bannatyne witness.......... would be significant if he/she turned out to be linked to the mother. Don't just assume, please, that the way you end up the wrong tree <g> Irene

Hope you enjoy it, and apologies to those who have seen it already. WARNING Genealogy Pox is VERY CONTAGIOUS SYMPTOMS: Continual complaint as to need for names, dates and places. Patient has a blank expression, sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind, except feverishly looking through records at libraries and courthouses. Has a compulsion to write letters. Swears at mailman when he/she doesn't leave mail. Frequents strange places such as cemeteries, ruins, and remote desolate country areas. Makes secret night calls and hides phone bills from spouse. Mumbles to self. Has strange, farway look in eyes. NO KNOWN CURE. TREATMENT: Medication is useless. This disease is not fatal, but gets progressively worse. Patient should attend genealogy workshops, subscribe to genealogical magazines and be given a quiet corner in the house where he or she can be alone.
