Thanks again Debbie Martin

    3. Welcome to Heather, Jennie Macfie, Bill Covey, Kaye and Maureen who have joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** A possibly useful source for list subscribers are the published proceedings of the Buteshire Natural History Society. As an example, "Arran in the Eighteenth Century" by George Laidler. D.L. [Read 9th December 1930] was according to my source, published in 1935. It is slightly mis-titled, as the talk was restricted to the time covered by John Burrell's diary (1766 - 1782) when he was Commissioner to the Duke of Hamilton, however for Arran researchers, it expands on what is in Volume Two of the Book of Arran. Now for copyright reasons, I can't give the full text as I have done with other documents in the past, but I will in future issues pass on some relevant quotes (for the sake of those of you with Bute &/or Cumbrae roots, I'll try to select the generic examples). ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. They brought their 6 children and had 2 more in Inverness. I am interested in learning about there life and family in Scotland. Thanks, Heather

    2. Candace Cox
    3. I would like to echo Peter's remarks on the liklihood there will be mistakes on death certificates. From my experience, I am beginning to think there are few certificates that are entirely correct. This past week I received the certificate for my aunt for which my mother, her sister, was the informant. She gave an incorrect middle initial for their father and the incorrect city for their mother's place of birth. My mother was also the informant on her mother's death certificate. She gave an incorrect first name for her mother's mother (but, this time, correctly gave her mother's place of birth.) Lest you think it was just my mother who made mistakes, my father was the informant on his father's death certificate and gave an incorrect name for his father's father. I'm sure many of you have had similar experiences and realize the information on these documents should be regarded as clues until further substantiated.

    3. Welcome to Elizabeth Peacey and Loretta who have joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** Recently I noticed a contributor to another list complaining about the lack of consistency in the entries in the IGI from the parish registers. They cited examples of the information in adjacent parishes in the same time period, one giving both parents full names, the other omitting the maiden surname of the wife. As it was an English list I refrained from pointing out that in many Scottish Registers there are periods where the entry simply reads " John son of Donald _ _ _ _ and his wife, baptised {date}". Not even a forename for the wife ! Makes research on Arran pre 1800 very slow This lack of birth information on Arran is compensated in part by the inclusion of parents in the 1855 and later statutory death records. But once again caution has to be applied, as the person who could confirm the information is no longer around. In my own research I have found nephews and nieces to be reliable informants in about 45% to 50% of cases only. Then one has to assess how much weight to put on the information provided by totally independent informants - the doctors' information I guess might carry more weight than the policeman, particularly when he was reporting an Arran death, but himself came from Bute. Musing on, this hobby of ours begs the question, how many of you are the family expert when it comes to the normal picture jigsaw puzzle? Food for thought. Continuing the train of thought, have you posted your Bute genealogical puzzle yet ? ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 1. CURRIE
    2. Very sorry - put CURRIE in the header of my previous posting, then forgot to include details. My great-grandfather's sister Mary HILL (born N Bute 1846) married John CURRIE a mason. One of the Currie children - Alexander? - is said to have been a journalist for the Buteman. This is intriguing because there are several journalists in our family today. If anyone has come across a journalist Currie on Bute in the late 18th/early 19th century I'd be very grateful if you would let me know. The late Donald Currie, who was editor of the Buteman until a few years ago, is no relation. Do any Bute residents remember Jane Currie who ran the post office at Port Bannatyne in, I think, the 1950s/60s? She was a daughter of John and Mary Currie, above. If anyone remembers her, I'd be thrilled to hear from you, Madeleine

    1. Tighaghaoil, Kilwhinleck, North Bute
    2. Hello again, Does anyone else have a link to Tighaghaoil? My ggg-grandparents John HILL, cottar, and Mary TAYLOR were living at Tighaghaoil in 1808 when their son Archibald was born. Tighaghaoil (also spelt Tighnagoigh) was part of the wider farmlands of Kilwhinleck and Miltoun. At this time the tenants of these lands are recorded as being a Robert SHARP and son, which suggests John Hill was a sub tenant of the Sharps. I'd be very pleased to hear from anyone who might have an interest in Tighaghaoil or Kilwhinleck around this time. Does anyone have any thoughts on why a cottar might have come to North Bute from Kintyre? It is possible that John Hill was a hand loom weaver, Madeleine Wales

    1. Reposting HILL, McFIE, CURRIE, McKINLAY
    2. Hello everyone, I'm taking advantage of the lull to repost my interests. HILL: My ggg-grandparents John HILL, cottar, and Mary TAYLOR were living at Tighaghaoil, North Bute, in 1808 when their son Archibald was born. I am 99 per cent certain that John and Mary came from Skipness, Kintyre. There was a lot of movement between Bute and Skipness - I'd be very interested to hear of other families doing the same. McFIE: Archibald Hill, farm labourer born Skipness, son of the Archibald above, married Jeanie McFIE at Kingarth in 1870. Jeanie's parents were John McFie, a hedger born c 1804, and Janet McKINLAY. Kingarth teeming with McFies, of course - it's very hard to sort them out. I'd love to hear from other McFies. John McFie's sister Eliza, born 1802, married John STUART at Kingarth. John and Eliza's parents were John McFIE, carter, and Mary SPENCE. McKINLAY: Janet McKINLAY, born c 1809, Kingarth, wife of John McFie, above, was the "reputed" daughter of Daniel McKinlay and Janet McFie. When I was in Edinburgh last year the relevant bit of the kirk session minutes that might have elaborated on the reputed bit was away for repair. Madeleine Wales
