    2. Daphne Kilbourn-Jacob
    3. Dear Listmembers, Searching for information and parents of William BALLANTINE: I have hit the 'brick wall' with my immigrant ancestor, 6xGgrandfather, William BALLANTINE. He showed up in Boston ca. 1648-50, claimed to have been born in Ayr, Scotland,1627. He was a cooper, a respectable artisan. He then married the daughter of a prominant citizen, Hannah Hollard (Father was Angell Hollard, a shoemaker) after being in the area only 1-2 years. Tongues wagged and contemporaries could not trace his Ayr origins (neither can I) but they speculated that he may have really come from Glasgow and been a Jacobite sympathizer who needed to leave the Country quickly, as a civil war had recently been lost for that party's cause. Several parts of this story make it a bit creditable: 1) The Bannatyne family were a Sept of the Campbell's, rabid Covenenters 2) Bannatyne's were a one time Stewart sept, could William still hold Roman Catholic leanings? 3) Wouldn't a Cooper be more likely to be sent to a shipping town such as Glasgow, for his apprenticeship and practice of his trade? 4)Lack of evidence for birth in Ayr, slim, but people in the colonies did write frequently back and for across the pond. 5)The use of the name Ballantine at a time when most of this family used Bannatyne. Could this be a deliberate disguise? In short, It's possible that Wm.B. was born in Bute, sent to Glasgow and was provided with a means to escape by the Jacobites. If there is any record of his birth in Ayr, I would be grateful for that. I do know the family comes from Bute originally. Daphne Kilbourn-Jacob [email protected]

I believe she came from Lamlash on Arran, possibly born around 1870. She married John Skelly McGowan around 1890-2 and lived in Belfast, N Ireland. I think her father might be John Cameron who died at Lamlash 26 Oct 1910 aged 79. His parents were Alan and Margaret Cameron of Ballachulish, Argyllshire. I have a few more details if any of this is of interest to anyone.

As far as I know the spelling with a single "m" rather than a double is correct. 3. Errol I can't help you directly with your family, except to say that John Coombe Maddever MINEHAN would undoubtedly have been named after Dr John Coombe MADDEVER, for many years a well known Rothesay doctor whose name appears on many death certicates there (including some in my family). Don't expect therefore to find the name Maddever in earlier generations of your family - unless you know something that I do not. 3. Welcome to Faye and Brian Heany who have joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** This is a reworked response to a subscriber to a neighbouring list who wrote in part ... >could you tell me if the following postcode is correct >....Glasgow 633-ZBZ. In the examples below ( L = letter and n = number ) I have also had a number of recent messages (off list) on various UK postcode problems, due to confusion with either of the US "LL nnnnn", "LL nnnnn-nnnn" State plus Zip formats, or the Canadian "LnL nLn" postcode format, and the various UK ones. An Arran example which, as submitted looked like the first US format, was "KA 27800" Historically the first UK postcode were introduced for London. Examples include E1, SW6, etc. Next came single letter postcodes for the major cities - the obvious Scottish example is G for Glasgow. The nationwide introduction of postcodes to the UK saw "LLn nLL" chosen as the standard two group format, but for the historic reasons given above, and operational neccessity there are a number of variations. Note that the separator is always a space NOT a dash as used in the 9 digit US zip codes, and is always followed by nLL (this group does not AFAIK use the letters I or O) - the variations are all in the first group. So here are the possible UK formats that I know of : Ln nLL Lnn nLL (see solution to problem 1 below) LLn nLL (the most common form) LLnn nLL (see solution to problem 2 below) LLnL nLL Again AFAIK this last format is only used in London, as an extension of the first postcodes referred to above. Thus a fairly reasonable solution for the first problem code is G33 2BZ , and the second translates to : KA27 8DD Knowing the format will in many cases save you from having to search on line at www.royalmail.co.uk/paf/ or http://www.royalmail.com/paf/home.htm however, it's always an option if you still want to check your guess, and of course it's the place to go if you need to look up a full postcode. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items.
