Hi everyone, I am looking for information on the LYONS or McLEAN name: JOHN LYONS, born 17th. April 1870 at 14 Mill Street, Rothesay. His parents are ROBERT LYONS, a mason journeyman, and BARBARA McLEAN, who married in Glasgow in 1869. Were Robert LYONS or Barbara McLEAN from Bute, or did they settle here ? Is anyone interested in the surnames LYONS or McLEAN ?. John's grandson, Robert Lyons, in Australia, is looking for information. Thanks, Carole. <[email protected]>

Hi Listers I recently received the following information: "James Davie seaman Rothesay son of the late James Davie silversmith Greenock and Jessie Taylor Rothesay daughter of Daniel Taylor feuar Craigmore Rothesay booked 19 and married 25th Sept 1851" I am assuming that, said, Daniel TAYLOR, feuar, was either a Landowner OR had a Perpetual Lease (set rent) on 4 Craigmore, Rothesay. This, property I assume would NOT pass to his family after his death. He died at 4 Craigmore in 1867! Can someone tell me HOW, Captain Daniel TAYLOR would have become a "feuar" ..... was there some sort of "local board" that "awarded" these "leases" to certain identities? Thanks for your help Janelle Canberra, Australia [email protected] Researching Davie, Halliday, Barr, Taylor and Menzies
a feuar is the tenant of a feu, and a feu is the feudal tenure of land where the rent is paid in money or grain instead of by the performance of military service. Up until the recent past most land and houses in Scotland were held in feu ......... my parents although they owned their house also paid a feu ......... a token annual sum. So it does not follow that the land/property would not pass to Daniel's children. Since you know his date of death, it would certainly be worth finding out if he left a will. Irene

In May of 1945, Jane Craig Hunter (b. 1875 d/o Neil Craig Hunter and Eliza B. Crawford) died, and in her will are mentioned the following women. I have not found any familial connections with any of these families. Anyone recognize the names? Mrs Ellen McLean, and Miss Mary Mclean, 16 Windsor Place, Rothesay, Isle of Bute Miss Margaret Colquhoun 43 Drumby Gardens, Clarkston, Glasgow Miss Elizabeth Boyd, 295 Netherton Road, Netherlee, Glasgow Mrs Elizabeth Urquhart of 57 Coventry Drive, Dennistoun, Glasgow Miss Annie Sommerville 32 Lawn Avenue, Mount Vernon, Ohio Mrs Alice Watson 53 Van Reipen Ave, Jersey City, NJ I have quite a bit of information on Jane's ancestors; her uncle, Adam Hunter was a grocer in Rothesay. Most of the other Hunters were living in and around Glasgow (or in Rhode Island).

Hi everyone, Daphne asked for more information about incomers to Bute. The introduction of the cotton industry in the late 18th century was one factor which caused the population boom, I believe, and the coming of steam made the island more accessible. Ian S Munro in "The Island of Bute" tells how in 1764 the Earl of Bute began a campaign to improve and develop natural resources on the island. "In 1765 Rothesay became a Customs House Station, and later a licensed herring fishery. In the following quarter of a century the fishing industry was extended, the new cotton industry started, and many agricultural improvements introduced. Road repairs were undertaken and a regular ferry service established from Kilmichael. An indication of the general expansion was provided by the increase of population from 2,600 to 4,800 during this period." By the mid 19th century Rothesay was a thriving town. "The citizens, who had been disturbed in 1813 by the sight of Henry Bell's Comet steaming in Rothesay Bay, soon adaped themselves to the new means of communication, and the harbour became a scene of continuous activity. The older industries were now supplemented by an emerging tourist trade." Of course, many of the incomers may have been Gaelic speakers, displaced from the Highlands (my own HILL ancestors spoke Gaelic and came to Bute from Kintyre in the 1840s) but it is apparent from the censuses how many people were Lowlanders, English, Irish etc. Officialdom's attitude to Gaelic is apparent from the Statistical Accounts. In the First Statistical Account for the parish of Kingarth, written in the 1790s, the Rev James Thornton, says:"Most of the natives speak English very well; although in conversing with one another, they seem to be fond of the Gaelic, their mother tongue, which chiefly prevails among the old people and may have been a hindrance to the more easy and more ready introduction of new methods of improvements in the parish." In the next Statistical Account for the same parish, written in 1840, the Rev John Buchanan says: "The English language is that spoken in general by the inhabitants. Persons who have come to maturity understand commonly the Gaelic language; but its use has much decreased within the last 40 years and is now chiefly confined to the aged, among the natives of the parish." In the First Statistical Account for Rothesay (1790s) the Rev Arcibald McLea writes: "The language principally spoken in the parish is the Gaelic; the names of the places seem, in general, to be derived from it ...." In 1840 the Rev Robert Craig wrote of Rothesay:" The English language is generally spoken by the natives and the Gaelic has rapidly fallen into disuse in the last 40 years. Scarcely any of the children now learn or understand it." Madeleine In a message dated 2/17/01 9:34:39 PM GMT Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << I did not realize that there was a large group of incoming Lowlanders & British in Bute. Could you provide more information about that to a descendant in the U.S. >>
Betty, Sorry but I can't tell you anything about Mount Pleasant House but a certain amount about the neighbourhood may be inferred from the census. The enumerator in district 19 seems to have travelled up Castle street, done Bishop street then Mount pleasant road then Bishop terrace. The majority of Castle street heads-of-households were self employed merchants, sea captains etc while Mount Pleasant Road/ Bishop terrace had more white collar workers. Within a few houses there was John Gillies, the town clerk(Lily Bank House), the Revd. Robert Craig's manse,(Free Church minister), a banker, a writer(solicitor) and a bunch of clerical workers. On the strength of that I think it reasonable to presume it was a comfortable, middle class neighbourhood - well that's the way it appears to me, I could be way off beam. Bill

Dear Madeleine, Black, in "Surnames of Scotland" confirms your hypothesis of the anglicisation of Mac Donnchaidh to (son of) Duncan. This must have been a very ancient name in the Gaelic world as the name DONNCHAD appears early in Ireland as well; the name later became DENIS, in some cases. In 717 AD, the abbott of Iona (then called 'Hii'), DUNCHAD died. Black cites "Adamnan" p.379. as his source. My own family were the Mac Camelynes of Bute, Kames Castle was their home. The name became Bannantyne>Bannatyne>Ballantine over the next 800 years (as well as other variant sp.s). I suspect that the fact Bute came to be split between the Campbell and Stewart Clans led to the Chiefs' spending more time currying favor in the the Lowland Capital. As a result, Lowlander and English speech were valued by these powerful politically motivated Clans. I agree with your ideas but feel that internal motives were also at work. I have Black's "Surnames of Scotland". It is great for historical purposes but not very helpful in searching individual families. Will do look-ups as I have for other Lists unless the requests become overwhelming. Scots were great travellers and many left home for greener pastures. I did not realize that there was a large group of incoming Lowlanders & British in Bute. Could you provide more information about that to a descendant in the U.S. with the usual misleading "historical" education? I would be very grateful for this. BTW, anyone have any Bannatyne/Ballantyne/Ballantine ancestors in Bute, Glasgow or Ayr, ca. 1600-50, esp. William B's? Mine was a cooper who misled the good Puritans in Boston, Mass. Bay Colony, when he arrived there and married the daughter, Hannah, of a prominent citizen. Her father was English, a shoemaker, named Angell Hollard. Wm's family had been, historically, a Sept of the Campbells. Turns out he was not from Ayr, according to his Colonial compatriots who thought he may have been an agent of the Clan Stewart, e.g. a secret Catholic!!! In Puritan Boston! Never proven, tho. Daphne Jacob Hello everyone, Anglicisation of surnames was linked to the decline of Gaelic and an influx of English-speakers to Bute, I believe. People without Gaelic found the names difficult to pronounce. Officials - teachers, registrars etc - anglicised the names perhaps. I think the names were either turned into a form easier for an English speaker to get their tongue round or possibly they were translated. For example, according to Angus Martin, writing about Kintyre - just across the water from Bute - Duncan represents Mac Dhonnchaidh (MacConnochie) "son of Duncan". Possibly The Surnames of Scotland by G F Black would tells us more. Does anyone have access to a copy? Angus Martin has the following to say on anlicisation of surnames in Kintyre. "There is no doubt that for many an ambitious person .... intent on social advancement, the Gaelic stamp on his character was reckoned a misfortune and a handicap. A vernacular manner of speech anbd the ingrained traits upbringing may be eradicated .... but what would one do with such a name as Brolachan or Loynachan? The answer of course is that one would change it." But he says motives of self-advancement don't explain the rash of surname changes which took hold in the eighteenth century. "In a society which - in south Kintyre at any rate - was increasingly succumbing to Lowland ways and in which the Lowland model increasing represented advancement in that society, Gaelic and the outward marks of the Gaelic character were becoming unavoidably declasse. The reasoning, whether conscious or otherwise, may be expressed thus - if one's surname was being torn out of its Gaelic mould and hammered into something more resembling a Scotch or English form, then why resist? The greater number of name changes were, therefore, simply the product of a long process of trasmutation on the lips of people and at the hands of scribes who were ignorant of Gaelic orthography." >From "Kintyre The Hidden Past" by Angus Martin Bill - many thanks for doing all the look-ups and posting the census info to the list, Madeleine ==== ButeshireGenWeb Mailing List ====

I would like to thank Bill McKinlay for his success in finding the 1851 census information for Robert McBride and family. The census data helps round out what we had already determined with the help of at least one other list member. Thanks for the help. Please note - I can only let you have details of the volume and page where these records are held. If this is of interest, please e-mail me directly with your requests. I am currently transcribing MARRIAGES - 1898 - OCT/NOV/DEC - Surnames Dy-Ell Hope I can help someone Wendy Morton Christchurch, NZ
