    1. Re: [BUT] Buteshire names
    2. Bill McKinlay
    3. Sharon, I should have mentioned in my previous note that Breckoch no longer exists! The cottage was abandoned in the mid 1800s but was located near the north-east corner of Greenan Loch about where the road (B878) has a right-angle bend. I believe the road in that vicinity is still called Breckoch Brae. Bill.

    1. [BUT] Buteshire names
    2. Bill McKinlay
    3. Hi Sharon, A couple of possibilities with the names. There is a Breckoch within the parish. There is also Breakouch or Breakough as I believe it is now spelt. This latter one is actually on the island of Great Cumbrae, within the county but not in the parish. The other perhaps either Drumachloy or, less likely, Drumreoch. Spelling was pretty variable at the time, many of the rural dwellers still spoke Gaelic and the session clerks who wrote the parish records seem to have had a bit of trouble at times!!! ( Breckoch in Gaelic is Tigha-Breachdaich, if you can figure how to get from one to the other, you are doing better than I am.) Cheers Bill

    3. Hi all, On certain sections of the Bute OPR film I found the handwriting difficult. In 1828 and 1830, my ancestors is stated to be a labourer in Rothesay parish at a place that looks like Brechask Or Breckech. Can anyone confirm the correct spelling of this place. In 1836 and 1838, he is listed as a farmer at something that looks like Drumchanag again in Rothesay parish. Any ideas. Fortunately the rest of the children are christened at Ardscalpsie and other places I can make out with some squinting. Help would be most appreciated. Cheers, Sharon

Surnames: Murchie/Blundell/Cook/Kennedy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SeC.2ACI/513.1 Message Board Post: Hello Jane: I have been researching the Murchie Family for a number of years, as I am a descendant of Peter Murchie, brother to Donald Murchie who married Janet McBride. The emigrated to northern New Brunswick in the early 1830s from the Isle of Arran, Scotland. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Murchie was born 5 May 1868 in Doyleville, NB and married Charles H. French, son of Charles French and Lois Wing in Bathurst Village, NB on 15 Aug 1891 (Provincial Returns of Marriages, No. 1731, Microfilm No. F13658, Provincial Archives of NB). They had daughters Elizabeth Louise born 12 Feb 1893 in Saint John NB, Amelia and your Lulu Irene (whom I do not have). I have located the birth record for Elizabeth Louise in the Vital Statistics Office in Fredericton NB. Information on Amelia was received from Tia Murchie-Beyma who lives in the US. It appears that Elizabeth married Walter Anderson and had two daughters. Amelia French married a Vendshus and had one child. I have had no contact with an! yone in this line so have scanty information on them, although I do have information on other siblings of Lizzie. If you are interested, I will forward what I have. 2. Mike Morrison
    3. Shauna, I don't have the answer to your question about photographs of Police personnel from Rothesay/Bute, but I may have a clue. My gr-gr-grandfather, Daniel Morrison, was a Police Sergeant in Rothesay around the turn of the last century and I would dearly love to find a photograph. The police station in Rothesay is now a substation of the Strathclyde Division. I was in Rothesay for the first time last June and didn't have time to drop by, although it was on my agenda. The Strathclyde Division has a website, which I will have to tap one of these days, but perhaps you can beat me to it! The word I heard from the local historians was that they felt the old records had been collected by the Strathclyde HQ. If you get to them before me, let me know and I'll do likewise.
