    1. [BUT] List Admin - Virus warning
    2. Peter Cook
    3. You will probably have had a warning direct from your ISP about this one, (I have) but just in case, there is a new mass mailing Worm on the loose named W32/Mimail The worm arrives in an e-mail that may appear to come from Admin @ your Internet Service Provider and has a Subject header: "Your Account- (followed by variable wording)". There is an attachment which should not be opened under any circumstances. There is little point in trying to contact the Sender's address as this will be forged. As usual, no on-list discussion on this topic, thanks. regards Peter

    1. [BUT] Sunday morning musings #208
    2. Peter Cook
    3. Welcome to B & J Mulqueen who have joined this week, and welcome back to Christine Mladen. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** Thanks to Bill for the 1841 update - must make time to get on-line and check things out properly now Kilmory is up! The issue of interpretation of 'weird' entries is one that often appears on lists south of the border. I could fill this page with examples from my wife's side (all Sassenach). The primary rule I have used in interpretation of ambiguous lower case entries is to count the number of vertical strokes, ignoring the horizontal bits and see if they fit the name in question [e.g. Lonlett for Scarlett - once the 'S' is interpreted incorrectly as 'L' (a common error and equally so vice versa), the 'c' has to become 'o' as 'Lc' just doesn't compute - the rest follows suit.] When the household was literate the enumerator had to translate their writing in the same way that we/indexers now interpret the Enumerator's writing - we know the indexers get it wrong on occasion - the enumerators ditto. Where the enumerator only writes the surname once and uses ditto's we have less chance than when it is written on every line. I have a classic case when the ditto was used, but the family spread over two pages - the enumerator took an each way bet and spelt the surname one way on one page and the other on the next - the indexer faithfully recorded the two variants - I wasn't able to confirm the extra family members until I viewed the film. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 1. [BUT] F.M. abbreviation
    2. Bill McKinlay
    3. Hi Graeme, Thanks for your comments, the team has done a great job. My suspicion is that this is possibly an error by the census enumerator and should be F.S. - female servant. (They were, after all, human, and like the rest of us, prone to the occasional error.) The enumerators did have a list of abbreviations that they could use however this wasn't one of them and in all such cases with the transcribing, it is recorded "as is" and left for the researcher to ponder on. Standard abbreviations have been expanded in the database. Grace was the last listing in a household with professional members and it would have been rather uncommon in those circumstances if there was not a domestic employee. While on the subject of the census, Kilmory parish in Arran is now in the database and Kilbride will be available in about 2 days.(Both 1841) Regards Bill Coordinator for Buteshire 1841 FreeCensus Project Link to Home Page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~buteshire1841/index.htm

    1. [BUT] Getting rid of spam
    2. Graeme Fitzpatrick
    3. Hi everyone A while ago, Peter mentioned he was having problems with Spam as the holidays were starting. For several months now, I have been using an anti-Spam program that has been working very well. I hasten to add that I have got nothing to do with this program apart from using it. The program works by checking what is in your email mailbox at your ISP, lets you preview any messages and then delete any that you don't want to read, before they actually reach your inbox on your computer, so you don't have to pay to download lots of garbage. You can also block addresses so that any mail from that sender is automatically deleted. This morning when I logged on, there were a total of 45 messages in my 3 separate email addresses. Within 2 mins, I was able to reduce that to 4 messages that I actually wanted to read. Best thing of all, if you only have 1 email address, the program is totally FREE!!! If you have multiple addresses, you need to buy a more up-market copy of the program but it is still fairly cheap (c $20 US). If you are interested in having a look at it, go to www.mailwasher.net for the free version, or www.firetrust.com for the commercial version. Good luck Graeme

    1. [BUT] Occupations
    2. Graeme Fitzpatrick
    3. Hi all Just been looking at the 1841 census & I'm now more confused than I was before :-). Seriously though, thank you to Bill & all his helpers for the work they've done in getting this census on-line. One question regarding an occupation that's listed. Grace GILLIES is shown, aged 21, at Princes St, with an occupation of F.M. Does anyone have any ideas on what that means? A surgeon, James SIMPSON, is also listed for the same address - could F.M. be linked to surgery somehow? Thank you for any suggestions, Graeme Fitzpatrick Gold Coast Queensland Australia

    1. [BUT] Orr/Pettegrew Family
    2. B & J MULQUEEN
    3. Hello list, I am trying to trace the beginnings of one of my relatives Isabella Hay (nee Orr) Isabellas parents were James Orr and Agnes Pettegrew. From what I can gather the Orr family moved to Maybole, Ayrshire prior to 1841 as they were on the Maybole Census for 1841 but the section for where they were born were all out of the county. Anges Orr 45 William Orr 21 yrs occ seaman Isabella Orr 19 yrs occ Agricultural Labourer Mary Orr 12 yrs James Orr 9 yrs Daniel Orr 6 yrs James Orr does not appear on the census so I assume he has died or living elsewhere. Looking through the LDS site I found this information James Orr b abt 1802 Kilmory Bute Married Agnes Pettegrew 1 Nov 1819 Kilmory Bute Agnes Pettegrew b 1796? Children William Orr b 1821 Isabella Orr b 1823 John Orr b 1827 Mary Orr b 1830 James Orr b 1833 Daniel Orr b 1835 So I suppose the question I am asking does anyone know of this family's history in Kimory, Bute? Also does anyone have details on the parents of James Orr and Agnes Pettegrew, or their siblings? Hope to hear from someone.. Thanks Jenny

Alexander went to Glasgow to work and in 1826 went to England where he married Mary Sanderson. They came to Australia in 1852 and settled in New South Wales. 1. [BUT] Mary Queen Of Scots
    2. Cathy
    3. Hi List, Further to some recent entries on the list re being descendants of Kings of Scotland etc, my family "story" handed down over the years is that we are direct descendants of Mary Queen of Scots! So, I am trying to find if this is possible and if so, which Scottish family it refers to. I have Donald CAMERON, born 1822 near Ballachullish, Argyle, parents Angus CAMERON and Christina MCINTRE (Christina's family goes back to John [of Brecklet] MCINTYRE and John [of Culloden] MCINTYRE). I also have Jane WILSON, born 1828 in Rothesay, Bute, parents Thomas WILSON and Ann FERGUSON (Ann's mother was Catherine STUART). And one more - Dugald CAMPBELL born ca 1812 -17 near Dunoon, possibly Ardintinny or Gle(a)n ferre (a)nt - but as yet I don't know his parentage. Does anyone have any suggestions re which line may have the Mary Queen of Scots connection? Many thanks in advance, Cathy, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. 1. [BUT] 1841 Census
    2. Bill McKinlay
    3. Hi Janet, Work is progressing on putting the 1841 census on-line. The database can be found at; http://freecen.rootsweb.com If you go there you will find on the left-hand side the access to the database. At the time of writing Cumbrae, Kingarth and half of the burgh of Rothesay are on-line and probably within the next 24 hours the second half of the burgh will be added. Work has still to be completed on Arran and the landward part of the Rothesay parish which includes North Bute. Please note that the database is still in its initial setup and there is a phased access to it. You may be able to get on it right away or you will be told how long a delay to expect. Topics such as civil registration & parish registers (or lack of - either/both registers and registration), non conformist churches (and their records), apprenticeships, how census were conducted, why some Buteshire towns/villages/farms prospered (or not), modes of travel , militia/ naval service, activities around the Islands i.e on the water, naming conventions, etc, etc, etc.- the possibilities are almost endless. 2. Bill McKinlay
    3. I'll see if I can find out and let you know. My suspicion is that, because AOL is one of the largest ISPs with so many clients, the organizers are concerned that the system may not yet be able to cope with a massive number of hits on the site at one time. (I am however no expert on the subject.)
