    3. With the Brexit count down done & dusted, the count-down for the switch off of Rootsweb lists continues with 4 weeks to go. For those with Isle of Bute interests, this link is to the Isle of Bute Family Histories Group Facebook page ... https://www.facebook.com/groups/821252321263867/ For those with Isle of Arran interests, this link is to the Isle of Arran Family History & DNA Group Facebook page ... https://www.facebook.com/groups/912668015524487/ I couldn’t find a Family History group for the Cumbraes on Facebook, however there were groups for Old Great Cumbrae & Old Little Cumbrae, however neither seems to have had any activity since being set up. 3. Thank you Peter for all the time over the years that you have sacrificed for us.  You have made a positive difference in my life and many others I am sure.Best wishes for good health and happiness in your retirement. Suggested options mentioned on the List-Owner’s list, are simply ‘fold’, or move either to groups.io or Google as hosts. It seems many of the closed Yahoo groups have gone to groups.io, and a number of Rootsweb lists have already ‘migrated’ there. A smaller number of RootsWeb list owners have opted for Google groups. If someone out there wants to take on the challenge, I can provide limited assistance up until the time all the Rootsweb lists are closed (2nd March 2020) - e.g. access to the subscription list [110], etc. Regards Peter Retiring Mailing List admin Continuing as ButeshireGenWeb website & query board admin _______________________________________________ --------------------------------------------- When replying, please remember to delete the parts of this message that are not relevant to your reply - that includes this footer section, thanks. _______________________________________________ Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/[email protected] Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY  Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community

    1. [BUT] Searching McNeill, Neal and surname variants
    2. Richard MacNeil
    3. Hello all, Is anyone searching the McNeill surname or variants on the Isle of Bute? I am trying to find the origins of my third great grandfather Robert McNeill who was born in Scotland somewhere about 1798, and moved to Nova Scotia, Canada before 1821.  He married Mary Crow that year in Nova Scotia. I am hoping someone out there knows of siblings and/or parents of my ggg grandfather Robert McNeill. Please contact me if you do! I have also done DNA sampling on FamilyTreeDNA, Ancestry and 23andme if anyone wishes to compare. Many thanks to Peter Cook, the Buteshire list admin, for his contributions over the years. Thanks! Rick MacNeil, Toronto, Canada

    3. Ancestry.com have announced that the RootsWeb Mailing Lists will be closed. Here is the announcement ... > Begin forwarded message: > > From: "RootsWeb Administration" <[email protected]> > Subject: [ROOT-LO-ANNOUN] RootsWeb Mailing Lists > Date: 8 January 2020 at 1:35:06 am AWST > To: [email protected] > > Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. > > Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. > > As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. > Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. > > Sincerely, > The RootsWeb team > > _______________________________________________ > > RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community Not an unexpected development, as for a great many of the lists there has been a total decline in posts from subscribers. The ever increasing availability of genealogical data via on-line search sites, has overtaken the relevance of these mailing lists to the Family History / Genealogical community. As noted above, the Bute Message Board will continue to be available at https://www.ancestry.com/boards/localities.britisles.scotland.but.general/mb.ashx Regards Peter ButeshireGenWeb Admin

    3. My wife’s great great grandfather was David Robertson married to Marion Hardie Hutton. We have traced a lot of the family history and have a book written about Marion Hutton Robertson. We have visited the homes they lived in and their grave in Rothesay. We have photos of the bakers shop as it was. It is no longer there. Our research was confined to David Jnr’s progression but Marion’s story in the book gives great insight to them in Rothesay. John Orr
