    3. Bette, I find this German part of the Butcher family very interesting. I came from John, then Gabriel Butcher, a Quaker from England. To your knowledge is there any connection between the German Butchers and the English Butchers? It might have been just a name that was easy to acquire. Just curious? Thanks! 3. Hi Mary, Some of my Butcher cousins and I have had this conversation many times. What we have found is that the surname "METZGER" is German for Butcher. To our knowledge there is no connection between the German and English Butchers. I have a two-fold interest in the surname Butcher as that is my husbands surname and also I have a Butcher that popped up in my Ingram line. Also I would like to say hi to Bette. Long time since I've heard from you also. Haven't found anything new on the our Butcher line in a long time. Great web page. Take care and have a great Easter. Diane M. 3. No, there is no connection that I have been able to find that the John, Francis, Mary or Gabriel Butcher who came into NJ early and were English Quakers. Back when I started researching in 1976, I thought they had to be as the 'family story' was "descended from the early English settlers in to the Valley of Virginia." I kept telling them all that no way - with the first names that were given to the children of Paulser, that they had to be German. Two cousins broke the line for the rest of us and that was that. There is no connection between the German and English Butchers - remember the original name was Metzger which means "a butcher" in German.
