Alicia, I would love to learn more about William's roots. There was no name "William" in the John Boucher/Boutcher family in Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary war. The names they used for generations were John, Benjamin, Samuel, Joseph, and Enos. Enos, who married Eleanor Vandergrift, named his son, "William," in honor of his father-in-law William Bloomfield Vandergrift. (Source: History of Bucks Co. PA by Davis (look for Benjamin Boutcher and William Bloomfield Vandergrift). William Bloomfield Vandergrift's grandson was a Democratic senator for Pennsylvania. Incidentally, Samuel lived in a town called "Bloomfield." Samuel, who went to Loudoun County, Virginia, was the only member in the family whose surname was spelled as Butcher (deed paper). (It is a blessing in disguise, so to speak, that he dropped "o" from the surname Boutcher so as to help researchers distinguish Samuel Butcher of VA from his nephew, Samuel Boutcher of PA.) One of the Virginia papers shows something like "Sama Bussa" as the name of Samuel of Loudoun. Below "Sama Bussa" is the name of his wife, "Susanna Butcher." Maybe a clerk wrote down exactly what his ear heard Samuel say his full name and what Samuel's wife Susanna say her full name.
