It is highly unlikely that they >are father - son. I disagree. Here is the proof: Alvaro Gibbens says (my summary from p. 119 of his book): Samuel Butcher, Sr. is listed in Capt. Cook's Co, of 13 Jul 1756 and at age 24 enlisted on 10 Jan 1755 in Amelia Co, VA . Born 1732, near Lancaster, PA sons John Sr, and Samuel Jr, migrated to near Bloomsfield in Loudoun Co. This would make his birth date c. 1732 according to Gibben's enlistment record. I have proof that 1732 was not Samuel's birth date and that the Samuel Butcher who died in Loudoun Co, VA in 1778 was the son of John who d. 1707: Philadelphia Co., PA Deed Book J. 10, p. 178 Deed dated 17 Apr 1761 Samuel Butcher of Loudoun Co., VA and Susannah his wife to David Marple of Philadelphia Co., PA, 40 pounds, a lot with a log tenement in Moorland, bounded by Thomas Austin, road leading from Thomas Austin's Mill, 7.5 A. it being part of three hundred and fifty acres of land which John Holms of West New Jersey Gent bought by deed dated 20 May 1702 from "....John Butcher father of the above mentioned Samuel Butcher...in and by his last Will & Testament in writing duly executed under his hand & seal bearing the date the twenty fifth day of June in the year of Our Lord One Thousand seven hudred and seven devised the said Tract of three hundred and fifty acres of and and appurtneances unto his son Samuel Butcher party to these presents..." I think I'll go with this deed rather than with Gibben's assertion that Samuel was born in 1732. Samuel was born considerably before 1732. John's will devises the land to an adult Samuel, so he would have be of age 21 in 1707. The above is quite conclusive naming Samuel, his wife, their whereabouts in Loudoun Co., VA and Samuel's father, John, and the exact date of John's will. There remains no doubt in my mind that I am dealing with the same Samuel, as compared to Gibben's data. >Where did you get the information that John was born in >"1651?" By the way, does the will of John show the name >of his wife? Both birthdates for John and son Samuel are approximate, based on the dates of the will and the number of children they had during their lifetimes. Hannah, the wife of John, is mentioned in his will: Philadelphia Co., PA Will Book C., p. 57-59 "...I will that Hanah Butcher my dear and loving wife be my sole Executor ...." >On Fri, 23 Mar 2001 06:15:24 -0500 (EST) garcher@Bix.Com writes: >> By descending generation: >> >> 1.
