My grandmother (Velma Edna Butcher) was the last person in the family to carry the name; she was born 1895 in Greene County, Missouri and died at the U of MO medical center in Columbia, MO in 1963. Her father was Jonas Monroe Butcher, who was born in Jackson Township, Polk County Missouri in 1859. He died in Springfield, Greene Co MO in 1916. His father was William S. Butcher, born in 1818 in North Carolina (probably in Surry County, but unknown for sure). Died 1888 Jackson Township, Polk Co MO. I do not know who his father was. There is a whole passel of Butchers in 1850/Surry Co NC, and the John Butcher who is the oldest person there, born in VA, *may* be his father, but I have no solid evidence of this.
