Nora, The George Butchers and the four William Butchers I referred to all were in Decatur Co IN in the 1850 census. Decatur Co joins Shelby Co IN. According to probate records the George Butcher had a son and grandson named William Butcher. They were in Clinton Tp in Decatur Co IN and I have been told that this William Butcher family later moved to Howard Co IN. The William Butcher I am most interested in is my GrGrGrandfather who was in Fugit Tp, Decatur Co. The census shows that he was born in VA. He, too, had a son named William in that 1850 census. My William Butcher's daughter Margaret R. Butcher married James Harvey Ray, my Great Grandparents, also of Fugit Tp and they homesteaded in Bourbon Co KS. Margaret applied for a widow's pension from her third husband's service in the Civil War, and her application states her parents were William S. Butcher and Christena Hildebrand. We have found a marriage record in Switzerland Co IN for a William Butcher and Christena Abernathy, so it is my theory that Christena had a first marriage to an Abernathy, and second to our William Butcher, as I had seen a reference to a Phoebe Abernathe in court records giving William Butcher payment for expenses. Researchers for the Clinton Tp. Decatur Co William tell me that their William definitely was not married to an Abernathy. My Wm. had a daughter Catherine who married George Miller in Decatur Co IN. The History of Decatur Co IN states that both my William Butcher and Henry Miller, father of George were in the Battle of River Raisin, which would have been in the War of 1812, and most of those troops were from Kentucky, which could be a natural move from Virginia. I, too, have found probate records in Virginia for a William Butcher with a son William, but I have no way of determining whether they could me mine! Any help appreciated. Marian
