Marian: I thought the lady said she was one of the children's desc..or was that you? She was president of a DAR chapter... I am moving into my new ly-restored (2 1/2 years work) 1910 house and all the files are over at "My Old House"...in the butcher listing and when I get to them next month I'll see. Ok? Alicia
Alicia, I went back to my file to see what I could find on the Shelby Co IN connection. It was for the RAY family, and not the Butcher family. If the lady you have reference to was descended from either Samuel or Hannah Butcher, Samuel's name would be Butcher and Hannah's would be who knows what! The lady I wrote in Shelby Co Indiana was Mrs. Dorothy Plymate, and there was a reference to her in a DAR magazine I had found at our library. I think it was a write-up of the dedication of a DAR marker for Thomas Ray, her ancestor. It was she who then gave my letter to Mr. Steven Ray who lived at Shelbyville. I found another Ray descendant from my Margaret R. Butcher who married James H. Ray in Decatur Co IN. He had a lady helping him with some research and it turned out that she had found where Margaret had applied for a widow's pension from her third husband who had served in the Civil War! She sent me a copy of it, and Margaret names her parents as William S. Butcher and Christena Hildebrand. She also named and gave dates for her siblings, which included the Moses Butcher I had found a Civil War Pension application for, but had not proved he belonged. In Decatur Co IN I had found marriages for two more Butcher girls older than Margaret R., who didn't seem to fit the George Butcher family, and had believed they no doubt were older children of my William Butcher, Sr. That leaves those two ladies unidentified! Unless my William had been married before and they were his from an earlier marriage and Margaret didn't name them! There are always more questions when we find a few answers, aren't there? There is no hurry--it will take you a while to get situated if you are as slow as I am about these things! Thanks. Marian
