From: "Ancestory of Max Lavell Draper http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/r/a/Mitchell-L-Draper/ BOOK-0001/0002-0033.html. Max Lavell Draper who prepared above said that John Boutcher was born 1635 ** in ** Hertfordshire, England and died 1679 in New Jersey. He was son of René Boutcher. He married Jeanne Cleves about 1645 in England. Jeanne Cleves was born about 1626 in France. They had children: 1. Ann Martha Boutcher, b. 1650 in Hertfordshire, England. Died Feb. 2, 1736/37 in Piscataway, Middlesex, NJ. Married Vincent Runyon July 17, 1668 in Elizabethtown, NJ 2. Peter Boutcher, born 1648 in England. I am not buying the above information because it is unsourced. There is a missing generation between the Hertfordshire John Boutcher (born 1625) and the Philadelphia John who died in 1707. Mr. Draper showed only two children Ann and Peter. Where are John, father of John, Jr. of Philadelphia and Samuel of Loudoun County? I'm sure most Butcher researchers have found this site but I thought I'd share it with everyone just in case a few have missed it. It appears there were Butchers who emigrated from England but a very large group of Butchers grew in the USA as a result of German emigration. Hope this site helps some of you! Happy Butcher Hunting! I know that Jane Butcher was born in 1796 in Germany which would lead one to believe that Jacob and wife Ann may have been born there as well. The name Butcher in Germany is believed to have been Metzger. I don't know when they immigrated to the US. Thanks, Claudia McCoy
My Jacob Butcher died in Highland Co., Ohio in 1832. He was married to a woman named Ann. They had seven daughters, Jane, Ann, Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret, Kezziah, and Polly. Jane Butcher married William Wilkinson in 1813 in Highland Co. Elizabeth married a Charles van Pelt. Margaret married Samuel Nutt. Kezziah married Thomas McKee and Polly married a vanZant. I have the will of Jacob Butcher in which he names his wife so she was still alive in 1832. To my knowledge he had no sons. Anyway none are named in his will. Does anyone know of this family? Hello Graham and Margaret and other Butcher researchers, I agree this has been a quiet list and I know that there must be a lot of brick walls out there on our BUTCHER lines. Maybe we can all add a little and liven this up. Anyone out there searching Butchers in the state of Maryland? My earliest ancestor is John and Sophis Butcher of Frederick Co Md. Their son Thomas Henry Butcher is my gg grandfather bprn ca 1837 in Frederick Co but chr. in Poolesville Montg. Co Md and married Keziah Francis Oden 13 Dec 1859. He disappeared sometime between 1863 and 1870. As well as Keziah and the two boys William Thomas Butcher 1861-1935 and Marion Francis Butcher 1963-1919 in Laytonsville Montgomery Co(my line) md 9 Jan 1890 Merryetta Stevens. I suspect tthat these Butchers are "English" Butchers and orig. from Anne Arundal and Baltimoe counties and possibly from the Butchers there and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. There is another researcher that has done quite a bit of work on the German Butchers in Montgomery Co that lived around mine and we cant seem to find any connection. But of course I am at the guessing stage. These families were very prolific and I am hoping that there is a "cousin" sonewhere searching these same lines. Hope to here from all the Butcher researchers out there. We need to liven this list up!!! Jackie Butcher Kalinauskas in Boise Idaho
Greatly interested in hearing from anybody who has discovered their BUTCHER family came from Salop / Shropshire. Especially interested in the Ludlow / Hopton Wafers area. [UK]. Looking forward to hearing from you. Michael Thomas - Helston - Cornwall. [UK]
Graham, Yes, this seems to be a quiet list. My only known 'BUTCHER' is at a dead end too. ggrandfather Ernest Noah Wyman STRONG married Florence BUTCHER born June 1865 in Kansas. They were married about 1881, possibly in Jennings, Decatur County,Kansas. Did any of your 'BUTCHER' family emigrate to USA? margaret
I subscribed to this list about a week ago and then went on a course for a week and thought I might see an email or two from this list . No emails were to be seen. This is only the 2nd mailing list I have joined and I wondered who else was on this list and wondered what sort of a resource this list was. My own Butcher line has been at a dead end for years. My ggggg.grandfather John Butcher was buried 12 Nov 1788 in Hernehill, Kent, England and I have no other individual information on him. I have his marriage and his wife's line going back more generations, but nothing else on him. Graham Butcher West Midlands, England
WWI Draft Applications Update Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc.); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them -- in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into -- state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? There are a passel of Butchers in Surry County NC in 1850. Two of them are laborers by profession; the rest are all blacksmiths. My William Butcher who went to Polk Co MO is among them, he and his wife Mary and children living with Oliver Bray and Mary (Butcher) Bray. Does anyone have any information on how these folks interconnect? For example, is Mary Butcher Bray William's sister or cousin? When posting your line (which I encourage, and we all should do) it's a great help to those you're asking if they connect if you put places and at least vague dates with those names, especially with common first names. For example, should you have a line where John Butcher is the father of Henry Butcher.....there are probably a number of times, historically, where that happens. If you specify that you're looking for the ones in Kentucky in 1870's, more or less, it's much easier for folks to tell right quick if it's likely to tie in with theirs (which might be John & Henry from 1920 Texas). Even easier if you're posting something like "John Butcher, 1820-1898, Lexington KY; Henry Butcher 1852-1931, Louisville, KY". (PS-those are made up names and dates, so if I accidentally hit your line---no, it's not in my data.<G>) Megan "Piglet" Zurawicz piglet@rootsweb.com RootsWeb Community Mentor and general dogsbody http://communities.rootsweb.com
