Jean: I forgot to tell you that I definitely would like to see what you have on Butcher/Bissonette if it is not too much trouble. They are as far back in the family as I can get. Thanks. Tom Butcher
Dear Jean: Thanks for the onfo on how to gather some info on Boutcher, etc. I will give it a shot. I know we had some contact a while back, but I seem to have gotten sidetracked! As a sidelight....I live in Cajun Country in S. Louisiana, which is very French in culture. In fact I have a lot of French heritage and had two grandmothers who barely spoke anything but French. Wouldn't it be something if "Butcher" would actually be "Boutcher" after all. Some of my friends call me "Boucher" which is really French for "butcher," Regards and keep in touch. Tom Butcher

Dear Tom, Great to see you on the List! There are a wealth of information on the Boucher-Boutcher-Butcher family, including your ancestor Bessonnett (more than three variant spellings) in the archives of Boucher-L, Boutcher-L, Huguenot-L, PaBucks-L. Here are the directions for the search in the archives: 1. URL: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cqi-bin/listsearch.p 2. Search List: Type in BOUCHER-L 3. Press SEARCH 4. Type in "John Boutcher", then type "Thomas", and then "Bessonett". I have in my file more information on Thomas Butcher - Anna Bessonett. If interested, I will eliminate all numbers and blocks from each space of three posts obtained from PaBUCKS-L so they can be very readable for you. I am accumulating information about my Philadelphia Butcher ancestors so was interested in your e-mail about a Philadelphia John Butcher. I do have Philadelphia John Butchers' in my background. The first ancestor I have is a John Butcher who was a preacher in the Friends Society from Oxfordshire and London England. He came to America in 1680 and settled as a colonist as a "Propreitor" of West New Jersey (Springfield Township, Burlington County), a settlement on the East side of the Delaware River just North of what was to become Philadelphia. He was one of the major land holders of the area and spent his life farming there. Living near John were his brothers, William and Thomas and a sister, Frances, who married John Antrum (Antrim?). The ancestor John Butcher had five children, Rebecca (became the wife of Job Ridgeway), Damaris (became the wife of Daniel Zelley), Sarah (became the wife of Joseph Ridgeway-a younger brother of Job), William (died unmarried abt 1728), and John Jr. (the eldest of the five and the only child with John's first wife whose name is not known). The other four children were from John's second marriage to Mary Walker (they were married in 1691). I have considerable information about descendants from this ancestor John Butcher. Basically, to get to Philadelphia, John Jr. had a son John III and the line continues: Job Butcher (b 1742, d 1819), Amos Wright Butcher (b 1781, d 1841), Washington Butcher (b 1815, d 1873), Henry Clay Butcher (b 1844, d 1938), Henry Clay Butcher Jr. (b. 1871, d 1918), Henry Clay Butcher III (b 1914, d 1942), Henry Clay Butcher IV (this is me). We may have an ancestral connection but I haven't found all of the children of all of these ancestors yet so I don't have any record of a Samuel in my lineage as yet. However, we may have a connection through the Philadelphia John Butchers. Perhaps some of the other respondants to your e-mail can add to this. By the way, much of this information comes from a very useful newspaper article about the Philadelphia Butchers published in The North American, Philadelphia, Sunday, July 12, 1908. THE PHILADELPHIA OF OUR ANCESTORS, by Frank Willing Leach. Old Philadelphia Families-LVIII-Butcher. Best of luck hunting! Henry (Harry) C. Butcher IV HB6621@aol.com

Hi, I am sorry I don't have any information for your search. I just have to write to say I admire your tackling the Internet at an age most wouldn't even try. My Father has been gone for about 16 years now and I just didn't have enough information to search his family out. All I know was that his name was Ray Orvis Butcher and that his dad was married twice, the second time to my dads mother Katherine Burke Butcher. His dads name was Joseph. They lived in Tacoma Washington and I think Joseph was born in England. I was thinking about how much my dad would have enjoyed the latest technology, the Internet, video cameras and such. He would have been doing the same thing you are doing. Best wishes in finding your missing pieces. Charlotte, from Vancouver Washington

This Butcher came from Philadelphia Co., PA and is named in his father's will as having received his inheritance early and moved to Loudoun Co when the father, John Butcher d. in 1707 near Philadelphia. (PA Co. Wills, C/57-59) Will dated 25 Jun 1707; probated 1707. This is strong internal evidence in this will that John was Samuel's father. I have not traced Saumuel back further. Let me know if you want to exchange more. If you have edvidence of his (English?) origins of this family, I would be intensely interested. Regards, George Archer (garcher@bix.com)

Hello Joanne, I am certainly curious to learn more. While they are of an earlier generation, the Butcher/Wright combination certainly piques my curiosity. Is the Butcher line the only connection we seem to have in common? I don't mean to trivialize that. I have nothing on the Butchers except what is in the brief note I sent earlier. Please continue.
