I was reading a 2/20 message from Marian Dunlap about Shelby Co., In. She mentioned a George and William Butcher. I am researching a George Butcher (born 1803 in Pittsylvania County, Va.) whose grandfather was named William (born 1750 in Prince William, Va. George and his family moved to Hancock County, Ind and George later moved to Shelby County Illinois. Williams father was John (born about 1705 and died 1778 in Loudon County, Va. I was wondering if this is the same family and if you know any more about John. Thanks, Nora Crauthers

Posted on: BUTCHER Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/b/u/BUTCHER/queries/10048 Surname: ------------------------- I am looking for Helen Mae Butcher, b. abt. 1865 in Pass Christian, Miss. to Will Butcher and Mary Clayton. I know about Wil and little about Mary. I have a picture of her that was taken in Starkville,Miss. I believe she was born abt.1847. Helen Mae married J.Jones abt.1900 and had 2 sons, Wallace Boone Jones and Douglas Snedecor Jones. She married again to J. Wason. Helen Mae lived the last 24 years in Galveston Co. Tx. where she died in 1944. She may have been married before she married J. Jones. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Alicia, I agree that your William Butcher (of Clinton Tp, Decatur Co IN) is descended from the George Butcher whose probate was in Decatur Co IN. I don't know anything about the George Butcher you say you correspond with. Do you think he might know about the two children Samuel and Hannah Butcher who belong to your younger William Butcher and my Deborah Jane Ray? Deborah is in the 1860 mortality schedule for Decatur Co IN which says she died with the ague, and your young William Butcher is listed with no wife and the two young children. Deborah was the younger sister of my James H. Ray who married MY William Butcher's (Fugit Tp Decatur Co IN) daughter Margaret R. Butcher in Decatur Co IN. Sure gets complicated, doesn't it? Nothing like finding four William Butcher's in the same county in the census! Marian
Marian: Remember, my lineage: Sadona Hancock (KY) m 1. John Brown in Bartholemew Co, IN 1838 1 child Martha Brown b 1839. He died right afterwards..haven't seen his obit yet. m2. 1840 Decatur Co William Butcher (1804 VA- 1868 IN) -m 1. 1825 Sarah Love: she died . They had 5 sons ) My great grand fatherJohn Bryant Butcher was b 1843, 2 other brothers. They moved to Kokomo, in 1850.where my family is from.. Haven't we talked, I think that I think I'm from a George Butcher line.? You do corresp with Col George Butcher USAF in TX, don't you? He knows a lot . The other lady is a Ray desc but she isn't one of those whom you mentioned. I'll get back to you on this. Aliclia
Alicia, I went back to my file to see what I could find on the Shelby Co IN connection. It was for the RAY family, and not the Butcher family. If the lady you have reference to was descended from either Samuel or Hannah Butcher, Samuel's name would be Butcher and Hannah's would be who knows what! The lady I wrote in Shelby Co Indiana was Mrs. Dorothy Plymate, and there was a reference to her in a DAR magazine I had found at our library. I think it was a write-up of the dedication of a DAR marker for Thomas Ray, her ancestor. It was she who then gave my letter to Mr. Steven Ray who lived at Shelbyville. I found another Ray descendant from my Margaret R. Butcher who married James H. Ray in Decatur Co IN. He had a lady helping him with some research and it turned out that she had found where Margaret had applied for a widow's pension from her third husband who had served in the Civil War! She sent me a copy of it, and Margaret names her parents as William S. Butcher and Christena Hildebrand. She also named and gave dates for her siblings, which included the Moses Butcher I had found a Civil War Pension application for, but had not proved he belonged. In Decatur Co IN I had found marriages for two more Butcher girls older than Margaret R., who didn't seem to fit the George Butcher family, and had believed they no doubt were older children of my William Butcher, Sr. That leaves those two ladies unidentified! Unless my William had been married before and they were his from an earlier marriage and Margaret didn't name them! There are always more questions when we find a few answers, aren't there? There is no hurry--it will take you a while to get situated if you are as slow as I am about these things! Thanks. Marian

Marian: I thought the lady said she was one of the children's desc..or was that you? She was president of a DAR chapter... I am moving into my new ly-restored (2 1/2 years work) 1910 house and all the files are over at "My Old House"...in the butcher listing and when I get to them next month I'll see. Ok? Alicia
Alicia, Early on I had made a connection with a Ray family in Shelby Co IN I had found in the DAR magazine, but who said they weren't our line, and she passed it on to another Ray line in the county and he also said they didn't belong to us. Dear Tom, Here are the marriage records of your ancestors. John Bessonet was unquestionably related to your ancestor Anne Bessonette. Perhaps it might be possible that Jonathan Butcher was connected with your Thomas? Please see more information in my following email. Alicia, If you get any response on your query about your Wm. Butcher's son William Butcher who married (1) Deborah Jane Ray and was in the 1860 census still in Decatur Co IN with children Samuel and Hannah I hope you will let me know. I have never had a clue as to what happened to the two children after that census. Just that you thought they all moved to Howard Co. The Deborah Jane Ray Butcher was in the Mortality Schedule for 1860 and it said she died of ague. Deborah was the youngest sister of my GrGrandfather James Harvey Ray. Marian
