I was sorting through May's stuff and found a list of one of the Butchers' ancestors which begins with Father: Ransom M. Butcher B 1851 Wright Co. MO; D 1916 Choctaw Nation Grandfather on father's side: David Butcher, B 1835 Kentucky; Mother: Samantha Caroline Spurlock Butcher (Ransom's second wife); B 1868 Boone Co, Ark., D 1903 Choctaw Nation Most of them reside in Oklahoma. Reading through and noting the same names (Edward Butcher, Ronnie Butcher (with a son Aaron), Helen Ruth Butcher, is interesting. I don't know where this list came from, neither does May. It isn't the list of Butcher ancestors I received about 10-15 years ago as they resided on the west coast.

I've been working on my husband's line and it doesn't contain many Butchers, BUT, for those who are interested I have a copy of the Gibbens-Butcher Genealogy, originally published @1895 and would be happy to look up Butchers from Wood Co., WV and their descendants for anyone who is interested - the time period is approx 1770- 1895. It's been awhile.....maybe it's time for everyone to tell about their BUTCHER lines..... Megan "Piglet" Zurawicz, ListPig piglet@rootsweb.com listmaster@rootsweb.com
My grandmother (Velma Edna Butcher) was the last person in the family to carry the name; she was born 1895 in Greene County, Missouri and died at the U of MO medical center in Columbia, MO in 1963. Her father was Jonas Monroe Butcher, who was born in Jackson Township, Polk County Missouri in 1859. He died in Springfield, Greene Co MO in 1916. His father was William S. Butcher, born in 1818 in North Carolina (probably in Surry County, but unknown for sure). Died 1888 Jackson Township, Polk Co MO. I do not know who his father was. There is a whole passel of Butchers in 1850/Surry Co NC, and the John Butcher who is the oldest person there, born in VA, *may* be his father, but I have no solid evidence of this. Does anyone else have a BUTCHER line that seems to be in the area of Surry County, North Carolina around 1850? I've found that there seem to be several NC BUTCHER families that may or may not be connected that run to blacksmiths and am really intrigued. No, I'm sorry. My William Butcher is from Nova Scotia.
Nora, Am Sorry My Butcher Came from TN 1808, before that I have no idea. I have hit a brick wall. My ancestor David did have a son George Mc Clelland Butcher born 1866 in Vigo, County, IN. His grandfather James brn in Tn 1808. James wife was Delila who was from Vi, but they married in Vermillion county, IN in 1833,. Here is a link to look for marriages in IN> Doris Search
Nora, The George Butchers and the four William Butchers I referred to all were in Decatur Co IN in the 1850 census. Decatur Co joins Shelby Co IN. According to probate records the George Butcher had a son and grandson named William Butcher. They were in Clinton Tp in Decatur Co IN and I have been told that this William Butcher family later moved to Howard Co IN. The William Butcher I am most interested in is my GrGrGrandfather who was in Fugit Tp, Decatur Co. The census shows that he was born in VA. He, too, had a son named William in that 1850 census. My William Butcher's daughter Margaret R. Butcher married James Harvey Ray, my Great Grandparents, also of Fugit Tp and they homesteaded in Bourbon Co KS. Margaret applied for a widow's pension from her third husband's service in the Civil War, and her application states her parents were William S. Butcher and Christena Hildebrand. We have found a marriage record in Switzerland Co IN for a William Butcher and Christena Abernathy, so it is my theory that Christena had a first marriage to an Abernathy, and second to our William Butcher, as I had seen a reference to a Phoebe Abernathe in court records giving William Butcher payment for expenses. Researchers for the Clinton Tp. Decatur Co William tell me that their William definitely was not married to an Abernathy. My Wm. had a daughter Catherine who married George Miller in Decatur Co IN. The History of Decatur Co IN states that both my William Butcher and Henry Miller, father of George were in the Battle of River Raisin, which would have been in the War of 1812, and most of those troops were from Kentucky, which could be a natural move from Virginia. I, too, have found probate records in Virginia for a William Butcher with a son William, but I have no way of determining whether they could me mine! Any help appreciated. Marian
