Does anyone know about the Thomas Butcher who was a furniture maker from NJ or Pa. whose piece of furniture was recently appraised on Antique Showcase on PBS? My Thomas Butcher ancestors, I had 3 or 4 of them, were cabinetmakers and in some cases, undertakers around Hamilton Square NJ. Thomas Butcher #/?
Hi, My Burtcher's were also known as Butcher's on and off. Bartholomew, Sebastian, and Michael were German stonemason's that came to Ste. Genevieve County, MO in 1797. Bartholomew was married to Elizabeth (brother to Peter) Bloom who was from MD and died soon after they arrived in MO. Bartholomew died in 1802 at Mine La Motte which is right out of Ste. Genevieve. For Sebastian we have in early 1800's a Benjamin with wife Theodice living in his household. Benjamin and Theodice end up divorcing. There is also another Benjamin Butcher in Ste. Genevieve that marries Jane Preston who was also m. to a John Butcher. I am not sure if these Butcher's are connected to my Burtcher's. For Michael we have wife Margaret Hayden (who is also listed as Margaret Pepin/Haydel) who he divorces and he died in Kaskaskia Randolph Co Ill 1829. Michael's children are Michael Eugene, Margaret Catherine, and Belemus Augustus. Would like to hear from others that are connected in anyway with this line. Or anyone that had early Butcher's that were stonemasons. About a year ago I recieved an email from a man that said the first ILL State Court house was built by a Butcher of Knox Co area IN. This was around early 1820's. Sorry I don't have my notes right in front of me for exact dates. If my line of Burtcher's did not build this statehouse they may be related to the one that did and if they did build it they may have had ties with Butcher/Burtcher's in SW IN. Thanks and more info on this family can be found at http://www.geocities.com/alwysrunnin Theresa Cate Richardson

My John Butcher born ca 1800 was married to Sophia Majors living in Frederick Maryland in 1837 when their son Thomas Henry Butcher was born and baptised at St Johns Episcopal church in Poolesville Montgomery Co Md which is just over the Frederick County line. D ?? He was in the 1860 census and not the 1870 and I am assuming he died in the civil war but haven't been able to find him yet. Thomas Henry Butcher md 13 Dec 1859 Montgomery Co Md to Keziah Frances Oden and they had two sons William Thomas Butcher 1861-1935 and my g grand father Marion Francis Butcher b 1863 Poolesville Montgomery Co Md died 1919. He md Mary Etta Stevens daughter of Rufus W Stevens and had a large family including my grandfather Marion Leslie Butcher b 5 Nov 1890 Laytonsville Mont. Co died 11 Aug 1984 Clarksburg. I do think my Butchers are Englsih and not connected to the German Butchers that apparently lived side by side in Montgomery Co and Fredrick counties are are related to the famous Pulser Butcher. I also think my Buthcers are connected to the Butchers of Anne Arundel County and Baltimore County and the Butchers of the Eastern Shore of Maryland BUT this is only theory at this time. Anyone working on these Butchers ?? Jackie Butcher Kalinauskas in Idaho

Looking at the 1850 census, my William S. Butcher and all the folks around who appear to be brothers/cousins are all blacksmiths. George Butcher, who I haven't tied to that family, but who comes from NC > Springfield MO and marries into another of my lines, was also a blacksmith. I don't know if it has any significance, but I find it interesting. Are you implying that the family trade may have been Blacksmithing? I doubt that you remember me, but I am one of the people who are trying to find the ancestors of Warwick Butcher. He was born around 1819. It's strange that you have mentioned Blacksmith. The only time blacksmith and Warwick were used in the same sentence is his paperwork as a captured rebel. It was listed as his trade. However, we have assumed that he was more a farmer and was just pressed into blacksmithing at the outbreak of the civil war. It would be strange to find out that he had some sort of Carolina connection. Hi Kev, A cousin of mine has completed an extensive tree. To view it, go to www.ancestry.com and type in Warrick Butcher in VA. There are only a couple of listings for him and #1 is the extensive one. Joanne, The problem is with our Butchers in southern WV, we go back so far and it dead ends. My grandfather paid the Mormons to trace the tree several years ago and the said the last name was changed from Gatewood to Butcher during the civil war, but we can't find out anything else. Someone else I met who is in the family heard the same thing. We go back as far as Warrick Butcher then it just dies. My Butcher line is in the Cabell/Lincoln Co. Va(WV) and Lawrence Co. OH area's. I am looking for more information on William, William Jr., Samuel, Reuben, Thomas Jefferson, and James Butcher who can be found on the Cabell tax lists from 1817 - 1830's, such as where they were prior to coming into Cabell County. My direct line is Matthew Hamilton Butcher (1812 - 1882), Thomas Jefferson Butcher (1833-1910), Benjamin Louis Butcher (1864 - 1946),Jesse Eugene Butcher (1900- 1966), Baxter Elmo Butcher (1926 - 1999) to my sister (Carla) and I (Patty) who are both researching this line. It is my belief that one of the above in Cabell County is either the father/grandfather of Matthew. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Patty
