Hi Mary, Some of my Butcher cousins and I have had this conversation many times. What we have found is that the surname "METZGER" is German for Butcher. To our knowledge there is no connection between the German and English Butchers. I have a two-fold interest in the surname Butcher as that is my husbands surname and also I have a Butcher that popped up in my Ingram line. Also I would like to say hi to Bette. Long time since I've heard from you also. Haven't found anything new on the our Butcher line in a long time. Great web page. Take care and have a great Easter. Diane M. Sorry list, I replied to a private email from my cousin, and inadvertently sent it right to the list. Excuse it please. Bette
Well, how are you? It has been a long time, since have heard from you. How is your research going for you? I get on the lists and then get tired of all the mail and drop off again. I noticed that a bunch of the "old gang" dropped off the Hacker's Creek list after a while. I got so sick of hearing them rave about ramps, that I thought I would scream. And really got nothing worthwhile from it. I hear from Joy every now and then. I don't know who is all on this Butcher list anymore. Have a great Easter. Are your folks around right now? Jim generally tells me when they leave for the Islands and I haven't heard from him in some time, come to think of it. According to material that I myself did not reseach there was a Lewallen Butcher who was born December 3,1860 and died May 19,1953. However, according to this material he was both born and died in Wright County Missouri. But his father Prior Butcher was born in Anderson County Tennesse March 9, 1831 and died in Wright County Missouri November 25, 1880. He would have been my Grandfathers first cousin as his father and my great-grandfather were brothers. Could this be the same man you were asking about? Don Butcher

Alicia, No, but I think that the best informant would be George Archer since he is a direct descendant of Samuel who "went to Loudoun from Pennsylvania". Alicia, I would love to learn more about William's roots. There was no name "William" in the John Boucher/Boutcher family in Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary war. The names they used for generations were John, Benjamin, Samuel, Joseph, and Enos. Enos, who married Eleanor Vandergrift, named his son, "William," in honor of his father-in-law William Bloomfield Vandergrift. (Source: History of Bucks Co. PA by Davis (look for Benjamin Boutcher and William Bloomfield Vandergrift). William Bloomfield Vandergrift's grandson was a Democratic senator for Pennsylvania. Incidentally, Samuel lived in a town called "Bloomfield." Samuel, who went to Loudoun County, Virginia, was the only member in the family whose surname was spelled as Butcher (deed paper). (It is a blessing in disguise, so to speak, that he dropped "o" from the surname Boutcher so as to help researchers distinguish Samuel Butcher of VA from his nephew, Samuel Boutcher of PA.) One of the Virginia papers shows something like "Sama Bussa" as the name of Samuel of Loudoun. Below "Sama Bussa" is the name of his wife, "Susanna Butcher." Maybe a clerk wrote down exactly what his ear heard Samuel say his full name and what Samuel's wife Susanna say her full name.
