LOOKING FOR ANY INFORMATION ON SARA LULU BUTCHER. MARRIED TO JOHN E. TONKINSON. LIVED IN OK. IN THE EARLY 1900.
I would like to hear from any British list members that are researching in Essex County, England. I just found out that my ggrandfather, Henry Butcher, was born in Castle Hedringham, Essex, England in 1843. The obituary stated that he spent his boyhood days on his father's stock farm. He then took the professional course at London Veterinary College, married and practiced his profession in London for a few years. My grandfather, Charles B. Butcher was born in London in 1867. They immigrated to Canada in the early 1870's, and my grandfather and another brother eventually immigrated to the States. I interested in finding what part of Essex county this Castle Hedringham was located and if any of it still exists. Also, am wondering if this London Veterinary College still exists in London. I can be contacted at my e-mail address. Pat Grieve pgrieve@thevision.net
Could Susan Butcher be Susanah Butcher, daughter of Harrison and Fannie Butcher?, If the same she was born abt. 1863. The sister of my grandfather Lafayette J. Butcher he was born in Preston Co. Va. Alicia, Gabriel Butcher b. 1627 in England. He married Ann (?) b. 1631 in England. Their daughter Francis Butcher was born in 1659 in Biddlesden,Buckinghamshire, England; d. 1719 in Northampton Township, NJ. She married John Antrim in Burlington in 1682. Our Butcher bus seems to stop here. The area of Biddlesden, is about an hour outside of London near Salisbury also of Stonehenge fame. Not far from Princess Di's ancestral estate. Also near George Washington's ancestral home. You know what, mothers are usually right!! In answer to the Georg Valentin Metzger becoming Valentine Butcher in several queries. The research of two of my cousins, Jeff Carr and David Armstrong - revealed that "the German name of Metzger evolved into Butcher in an English translation. Occupation of a butcher was known as a fleischer, schlacter and metzger. When Anglicized, these names became flesher, slaughter and metzger." It had nothing to do with emigration. Also the name of Metzger would be misspelled so many different ways and phonetically from Mitcher, Mitscaw, Matzger, Mischarles and Mitchkar. Some records showed our Valentine "Melchoir" Butcher of Augusta Co., was really George Valentin Metzger. He came from Niederlinxweiler, Germany, which is between St. Wendell and Ottweiler, some 15 km ne from Saarbrucken. (Southwestern Germany - Saarland area.) Georg Valentin Metzger settled in Frederick Co., MD with his wife and two daughters. He is named in a court case in the June 1750 court of that county. Records at the Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fred. Co.,MD, - they had a son, Bathasar Metzger, b.26 Jan 1753. The child's named sponsors were Balthasar Bach and the "single daughter Maria Elisabeth Fautin". This son turned out to be Paulser Butcher. Balser and Paulser were nicknames for the more formal Balthasar. In German, the "b's" and "p's" have the same pronunciation. David Armstrong documented that Paulser was referred to as "Balser Butcher" in several reports. Hello All, In any of your Butcher's was any of them Coopers(Barrell Makers). My James M. Butcher born In Tenn abt 1808 was a cooper. He was in ID by 1833 he married Delila Rush. I am thinking That his father might be Issac. I have been looking in vain for any connection for him. His wife was from VI b abt 1814. There was a Elizabeth Butcher who married a Rush also in IN, maybe this was his sister. The family than moved to Ill for a short time then on to Woodbine, IA Doris Waddell P.S. I started this whole thing to find out what nationalitity my husband was. And I have been doing this ever since.
To Butcher couisn I looking for The Tennessee Butcher. They all lived in Graniger and Union Co Tenn. If there is any information on they I would appreicate the help . my Email is Kevans2288@aol.com . The Butcher married into the Evans family . Karen Carter Evans
No, there is no connection that I have been able to find that the John, Francis, Mary or Gabriel Butcher who came into NJ early and were English Quakers. Back when I started researching in 1976, I thought they had to be as the 'family story' was "descended from the early English settlers in to the Valley of Virginia." I kept telling them all that no way - with the first names that were given to the children of Paulser, that they had to be German. Two cousins broke the line for the rest of us and that was that. There is no connection between the German and English Butchers - remember the original name was Metzger which means "a butcher" in German. Bette, I find this German part of the Butcher family very interesting. I came from John, then Gabriel Butcher, a Quaker from England. To your knowledge is there any connection between the German Butchers and the English Butchers? It might have been just a name that was easy to acquire. Just curious? Thanks!
