Author: gbussey61 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bussey/453.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Cousins! My grandfather too is Alex W. Bussey of Edgefield, SC. My dad is Marron's half-brother through Alex's 2nd marriage to Mattie. Marron was quite a bit older than the 6 kids from my Dad's group. Alex actually had 9 kids: a daughter named Helen - out of wedlock I believe; then Marron and Leon (born 1911 and 1913); then the 6 kids of which my dad is a part of. Alex was the oldest of a large number of kids. He was born in 1887. Lots of names I can't even remember. I visited Marron while he was living in Belvedere when I was 5 or 6 years old, many years ago. He was such a great uncle and I really enjoyed him. I remember his wife Hope, whom he was married to when he passed. Alex founded and pastored New Canaan Baptist in NE DC, not Abyssinia. The church is still thriving in a newer building. He still has a half sister living in DC - Helen - 94 years old. Alex's parents are buried in or near the China Grove Baptist Church in Edgefield. I forget their names though. My dad talks to Marlene pretty frequently and I saw her a few years ago in Richmond, VA. Great sharing with you and hope to hear your story. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: louisegibbs2744 Surnames: Bussey, Gibbs Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bussey/461/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Philip Gibbs married Phebe (Bussey?) Can anyone share info on this couple and/or family? Another preacher, of the name of Philip Gibbs, lived, if I mistake not, in Hancock Co. (Geo.) He is described as a most excellent man, and withal, of somewhat an eccentric turn of disposition. Br. A. Greene, of Green Hill, and his lady, were personally acquainted with the old man, and I believe, have heard him preach. He died 26 years ago. He, too, was a Calvinistic Universalist. The following anecdote, the old gentleman used to tell of himself, and his own father-in-law, of the name of Bussey. Mr. Bussey was a Baptist preacher, and was in the habit of buying corn on credit from a man of the name of Moses. Mr. Gibbs was once sent on the same errand, but was refused the corn until his father-in-law had squared up former accounts. On his return, he repaired to the place of meeting, where Mr. Bussey was preaching from some one of the declarations of Moses, as found in the Bible. During the discourse, Mr. B. happened to ask the question several limes-"And what does Moses say?" ! for the purpose of impressing the matter upon the attention of the "congregation. This inquiry, so struck the odd fancy of Mr. Gibbs, that he rose gravely in his place, and audibly replied, " Before God, he says, he will let you have no more corn, until you have paid him for what you have got.'" So ludicrous an interruption, so disconcerted the preacher, and excited the risibility of the people, that the meeting broke up in confusion.
