It seems as if the Bushells did spread acros Norfolk. Regards JOHN
Hi All I have just found out that my G Grandmother was Lavinia Bushell. She was married 23 February 1895, aged 23, to William John Hodgson in the Wesley Chapel in York, England. I always knew her first name was Lavinia and that she was born 3 February 1875, but until I got her marriage certificate from the GRO I didn't know what her maiden name was. The marriage certificate lists her father as Harry Bushell, Agricultural Implement Maker. I cannot find Lavinia Bushell in the St Catherine's House index of BMD for the first or second quarter of 1875. I also have a problem in that I cannot find Lavinia Bushell in the 1881 census when she should have been aged 6. There is one Bushell family in York in 1881 but this Bushell family appears to have a Lavinia in it already . Here are the details:- Dwelling: The Mount Census Place: York St Mary Bishopshill Jnr, York, England Source: FHL Film 1342141 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 4719 Folio 123 Page 8 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Henry BUSHELL M 52 M Banbury, Oxford, England Rel: Head Occ: Agr Implement Maker Mary BUSHELL M 52 F Banbury, Oxford, England Rel: Wife Harry BUSHELL U 23 M York, York, England Rel: Son Occ: Agr Imp Maker James BUSHELL U 18 M York, York, England Rel: Son Occ: Agr Imp Maker Edward BUSHELL U 13 M York, York, England Rel: Son Mary Ann BUSHELL U 11 F York, York, England Rel: Daughter Florentine BUSHELL U 9 F York, York, England Rel: Daughter Alethra BUSHELL U 4 F York, York, England Rel: Daughter Annie E. I am making this assumption as they are the only Bushells in the 1881 census to be born in York. Lavinia, age 21 ( the only Lavinia Bushell in the 1881 census index), Cassandra age 16 and Bernhard age 14. Is anyone else researching this family? Any help with this would be appreciated. HI everyone, I'm new to the list. Seems like this surname would be pretty rare - I had not heard of it until I was given this family history info. Can anyone tell me the origins of this surname ?? Specifically, looking for the parents and siblings of Margaret Bushell, she was born abt 1686 , she was 'of ' Billings, Lancashire, England, she married James Harrison in 1707, they had 6 children in Lancashire England. 2 of the children were christened in 'Sutton Prescot', while 4 of the children were christened in 'Prescot St Helens'. 'Prescot St Helens' sounds like a Church to me, while 'Sutton Prescot' sounds like a town. Is that right, or are they both churches ?? or both towns ?? thanks, Mary McCashland ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I went on a guided trip to France in July 1999 and our guide was a historian. She said "Bushell" is a Norman name and there was a "Bushell" on the 1066 invasion force. Cool eh ? Thought I was an Aussie - but I'm a NORMAN !

All your names are so familiar with the names of our Bushells, I can't believe how many Johns and Patricks there were, and Bridgets, Mary, Marg and Catherines. My line came from County Clare, with Patrick married to Margaret Burke. I am not sure where they ended up, but there son came to Australia in 1857(Martin), I follow on from his line. I am still trying to find where Patrick and Margaret went, if they ever left Ireland. Good luck, and I am sure you will find your lot are from County Clare as well. Regards Kim
Amazing news for family history researchers of ancestors born or living in England and Wales when the 1901 Census was taken. The Index is free and contains 32 million individuals. Take the guided tour for more details. We also had a few Bridgets in our family, so that makes me think there is a connection somewhere, they always seem to have the same names. Kind Regards Kim

It is interesting to know that the name goes back to Anglo Saxon days. Has the spelling changed over time, and do you happen to know what the meaning of the Bushell name is, i.e Smith was a blacksmith, Baker a bread baker, etc? Thank You Gordon
