Indeed, research on the different James Busbys has become confusing. I hope that this posting doesn't add to it. Three James Busby's whose descendants often get mixed up are: James Busby (2 May 1754-18 Jul 1838), son of John Busby m1. Nancy Thomson m2. Elizabeth Shackleford (18 Oct 1774-), 4 Mar 1790 Albemarle Co VA, dau of Roger Shackleford and Nancy Ann Carter Children: Cynthia (c.1795); Martha or Patsey (c.1797-1864; m. Geo A Ritter); Gabriella (c.1804); Sophia (c.1806); Georgia Ann (c.1808); James jr (c.1812); Polly (c.1814); Sarah Jane (c.1816) Siblings: Robert Busby (1759 Hanover Co VA-m. Nancy Foster), William Busby (1760 Henrico Co VA-m. Molly Layne), Edward Busby (-m. Mildred Smith), Raleigh Busby (-m. Polly Okley) Sources: A warrant for 100 acres of land issued to James Busby, heir-in-law of John Busby, the 9th day May 1786. This would indicate that John Busby had three years service in the Virginia line and that James Busby (evidently the son of John Busby) received the warrant as John Busby probably was unable to appear in person. James Busby, Elizabeth, W2995, Cont & VA Line, sol was b 2 May 1754 or 55, sol lived in Goochland Cty. VA at enl, sol appl 25 May 1818 Fayette Cty. KY & in 1835 was living in Bourbon Cty KY, sol m Elizabeth Shackleford in Albermarle Cty VA (m bond was dated 4 Mar 1790 & was signed by Roger Shackleford), sol d 18 or 20 Jul 1838, wid appl 7 Feb 1843 Bourbon Cty KY aged 68 & was still there in 1850, children in 1820 were; Cynthia 25, Patsey 23, gabriella 16, Sophia 14,George Ann 12, James 8, Polly 6 & Sarah Jane ahed 4, sol's bro Robert Busby lived in Bourbon Cty KY in 1839 William Busby aged over 80 living at Portsmouth, Ohio, on September 23, 1941, wrote; "I am the son of Eldridge Busby and Emily Downey. Father had brothers Hiram, Henry and Raleigh Jr. The four of them were sons of Raleigh Sr. who had a brother James, a soldier in the Revolution. My three uncles Hiram Henry, Henry and Raleigh Jr. all moved to Indiana, but have no information regarding any of their descendants".
