I have enjoyed reading the BUSBY list for some time. I'd like to present my family info, and ask for more help with these Busbys. My genealogy: GGGGrandfather--Robert Busby, b. perhaps Lexington District SC?, appx. l8l5-l820 GGGrandfather---Harrison Michael Busby, b. l84l Alabama, d. l9l9 Jacksonville, AL, m. Mary Clementine Stephenson b. l841 GGrandfather--Robert F. Busby, b. l862, d. l952 Chattanooga TN, m. Mary Jane Gowens b.l866 Rock Run, AL, d. 1919 Grandfather---Fred Busby, b. l889, d. l926 Leeds AL, m. Nora Mae Murphy in l9ll Piedmont AL Mother---Lucile Busby, b. l9l9 Aragon GA, d. April l986 Oxford AL, m. Grover V. Carpenter l943 in GA, lived in Oxford AL Me---Carolyn Carpenter, b. l950 Oxford AL, m. Gene Funderburk l975 Through research I believe the Busbys MAY have Indian blood, or married into it. I think Harrison's wife Mary Clementine Stephenson is Indian, possibly Cherokee. The Gowen name (of Robert's wife Mary Jane), also spelled Goin/Going/Gowan/Goen/etc., is frequent among the present-day Cherokee and Lumbees of NC. There was a community, now maybe just a crossroads, known as Goinstown in Rockingham County, NC. There is a Gowensville town in northern SC in the same area that a Gowen's Fort stood during the Rev. War, along the Cherokee pathway from Virginia into North and South Carolina and beyond. Does anyone connect to Harrison M. Busby, or his father Robert? Any other Gowen researchers here? Have you all heard of possible Indian heritage? Thank you. Carolyn Funderburk [email protected]
Carolyn, we may be related. My Busby is from the S.C area, and ended up in Tennessee. My line is : Grandmother: Lucille Busby, her father was : Paul Jones Busby and his wife was Alice O Emmert, his father was William M. Busby They were all in the Lawrenceburg, Tennessee area. Hope we are related, and then we can see what all we have together.
