In the early days, before households were numbered in the order they were visited, were the people listed living next door to each other? In 1810-20-30-40 records, just people's names were shown. In Adair Co KY, my Matthew Busby was listed just after or just before Robert Busby. Does this mean they lived very close together? Thanks, Paula
Unless the census has been rearranged by the enumerator to be in alphabetical order, the census was supposed to be taken in order of residence. The census taker was a sworn assistant U.S. Marshall and thereby under oath. But, we know there was hanky panky in that some people were counted that did not exist or children listed that did not exist or families listed twice or more (where there was not movement of the family to a new location).. The 1820 census of Adair Co. KY looks to be in order of residence. I don't see a Robert in the 1830 or 1840 census of Adair Co. So, yes, in the 1820 they either lived next door to each other or they could have lived in the same house just, two heads of families.... Does anyone know how many Matthews there were in that time period? My Matthew is the one that leads down to William D. ________________________________ From: TOM F DUNKLIN <dunk1432@verizon.net> To: busby@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, May 16, 2009 6:34:50 PM Subject: [BUSBY] Early Census Records In the early days, before households were numbered in the order they were visited, were the people listed living next door to each other?
