    1. Zachariah BUSBY (1795-1870)
    2. Dear Ray and Fellow Researchers, First I wish to thank the List "Keepers" for a great job that they are doing and also the response from other researchers. Please enlighten me further on my GGGrandfather and his name. I find in many places his name being John Zachariah BUSBY but I have not found the name John in direct connection with Zachariah (1795-1870, Mobile Co., AL. All documents that I have seen, eg: 1850 Census, Jasper Co., MS, pg. 58, dw# 362, fm# 382 1860 Census, Mobile Co., AL, pg. 42, dw# 346, fm# 275 enumerated with Sarah (STREET) and corresponding children, show his name to be Zachariah. The marriage license of his daughter, Matha Ann Caroline BUSBY (1837-1926), recorded in Mobile Co., AL , as William LANE to Caroline BUSBEE, 27 Jan 1863, bonded by William LANE and Zachariah BUSBEE. (both signed with "X"). The death certificate of Martha Ann Caroline LANE, State of AL, Mobile Co., file# 21931, dated 25 Sept 1926, gives her fathers name as Zacharia BUSBY and mothers name as Sarah STREET.(cert. courtesy of Ruth Broadus TUITE, Mobile) 1850 Agriculture Census, Jasper Co., MS, pg. 727, line 11, gives his name as Zachariah. I am not saying that his name is not John Zachariah but I have not seen this in any records except family genealogical reports. Where did it come from? In the early 1980s I corresponded and visited with a cousin, James H. CREEL of Eight Mile, AL, who stated in one of his letters, " I do know that he {Zachariah} was a "hard-shell" (Baptist) minister, and insisted on good treatment of his negroes even before the Emancipation Act. I met a couple, George and Eliza JACKSON, when I was just a small boy,and they told me they were born during the last years of the Civil War, on the plantation where my great-grandfather BUSBY was overseer. They told me that the farm was situated here in Mobile County in an area lying south of Eight Mile Creek, west of U.S.Highway 45, east of Wolf Ridge Hill, and north of Three Mile Creek. This would encompass areas now known as Toulminville, Trinity Gardens, parts of Crichton and parts of Whistler. I even know the location of the overseer's home and the location of the church of the church where he ministered." Alas, I did not find out the location of either. Any information would be greatly appreciated!!! Michael Lee Busby 3237 Six Foot Road Ohatchee, AL 36271-7278 mailto:MBusby3237@aol.com
