Elizabeth Busby/Busbey is my 4th great grandmother. > I am looking for the family of my 3d-great-grandmother, >Elizabeth Busbey, who was married in Hampshire Co., >WVA to John Wheeler Meredith on 18 Apr 1793. I have >indications that she is the daughter of Rev. Elijah Busbey >and Mary E. Hite, but no proof. I have her parents as John Busby and Margaret Patterson. My sources seem to bear this out although it's not quite "proof:" < The Busbeys in America are descendents of the Busbeys of Staffordshire and Yorkshire, England. John Busby was born in County Antrim, Ireland about 1747 and in 1765 married Margaret Patterson. In Jan 1776, soon after the birth of their first child, they emigrated to Virginia. with them went his 3 brothers, James, Robert, and William. All 4 of the brothers served in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia Line. James, Robert, and William later received pensions. the children of John and Margaret were: elizabeth, Matthew, Samuel, John, Benjamin, and Hamilton. ... [Copied 18 Feb 1963 from "Busby Family Genealogy" by Harry E. Rice, Washington, DC; appearing on CD-ROM produced by United Ancestries.] John sold 9 pieces of land in Hampshire County, VA between 1799 and 180?. One sale was witnessed by John W. Meredith and John Busby Jr. The 1810 Federal Census for Hampshire County, VA listed a John Busbey as head of household consisting of 4 males and 1 female. His will was written 15 Mar 1808 and probated 19 Nov 1810. He left a widow Margaret and seven children: Elizabeth Meredith; to William, a lot in Romney; to matthew, $20; to John, $1; to Samuel, land; Benjamin and Hamilton, minors. Executors were Samuel Busbey, John Candy, Daniel Carmichael. Witnesses were Adam Brown, John and Joseph Martin.> I'm curious as to what info you may have on John Wheeler's parentage. I have stopped his line because I have had two different persons named as his father. I have yet to find any info to support either one. I have a web site but I haven't updated it yet with the above Busby data. If you'd care to check it out, it's address is: http://pages.prodigy.net/genehanson/dye/d0/i0000318.htm#i317 That will get you to where John Wheeler and Elizabeth is mentioned. Gene *************** Carla, he wrote back and amended his emigration date for John to 1766. This data he gave me fits very solidly with the data I have on Miami Co., OH, Busbys, so I am quite convinced that the above John Busby is my ancestor. I really can't see a match with your John Busby UNLESS my John emigrated sooner than Gene Hanson's estimated date of 1766 and then there was a move TO Hampshire Co., VA (now WVA). Please let me know if you uncover any clues that may point to this possibility. Fun talking to you last night. Patsy
