Howard, I saw you post and thought I might be of help. There was a BUZBIEVILLE (or BUZBEEVILLE) listed on the 1860 Coffee Co, AL census (film # 0,803,005) page 873. This is where my relatives migrated from on their way to Walton CO., FL. Originally from SC. I also saw the BUSBY name on an old map of SC but let it get away from me. I thought I had it saved on disk but just can't seem to fine it, I found it originally on the internet. Thanks for your interesting posting of your trip to GB. My grandfather and father were named William H. For the longest time I thought the surname Busby was relatively unknown and its membership very small. I was amazed at the number of people with that name cropping up on email daily. Just the other day, out of curiosity, I counted the number of William Busbys on the Social Security death index and came across 122 William Busbys that had died between 1965 and 1995. While that may be small in comparison to the Smiths and Wongs of the world, it is still a large number considering my previous assumptions. By the way, my grandfather and father were both from Mississippi as well. Howard

Michael Busby(AL) thanks for the interesting info on our BUSBY name. Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas and a glorious New Year. Dottie
Gaila: There is a Charity Busby in the early 1800 census records of AL - since so many Busby's migrated to the Mississippi Territory - wonder if you can follow her trail in that area? Dottie

According to Univ. of Penn., the Britsh military headgear mentioned was named "Busby" due to the fact that it was first manufactured by Busby of London. http://nisc5.upenn.edu/~fbl/dtferrier.html this will give you a picture of a busby and what this one was made of . Then go to the glossary at the bottom of page. Scroll to Busby. >From Vol.1, Surnames of the United Kingdom: A Concise Etymological Dictionary, by Henry Harrison, BUSBY(Scand.) Belonging to Busby-The BUSH-SETTLEMENT. (Scand. busk {Scot.bus}, a bush, schrub, thicket + by, a settlement, village) Their is a township of Great Busby in the parish of Stokesley, N. Ridings, Yorks. This would also be located in the original Danegeld (Viking territory on the English east coast). Michael Lee Busby (AL)
> I have read somewhere the Buzby name derived from Hungary.I believe the >name means bear(Hungarian),hence the headgear the English guards wear are >called buzby's,made of bearskin. Interesting question and I hope someone can answer this :) But I have a little bit of trivia. Has anyone's Busby ancestors been bee keepers? My grandfather, Thomas Busby Jr. was a bee keeper and a farmer. Can you imagine... people talking about Busby's bees :))) But it was the best honey around! :) Lonna
This is an excerpt from an email sent to me by one of my cousins. They (James and Liza Jane) lived near Louisville when David and a couple of other children were born. Did you know the family had lived in Owen Co. IN (and had several children) before they moved back to KY? Evidently, our Busby's couldn't make up their minds whether they wanted to live in KY or IN! Here's what I have from the 1850 Owen Co. IN census: James Busby 38 b: abt 1811 farmer KY Eliza 32 b: " 1817 KY 1. Hector 11 b: " 1839 KY 2. Valentine 9 b: " 1841 IN (male--called "Volley") 3. John F. 3 b: " 1847 IN 4. Henry Charles 1 b: " 1849 IN d: 11 Aug 1911-IN They must have moved back to KY shortly after 1850. I haven't located them in KY, because I can't find an 1860 census for Jefferson Co. KY (Louisville). I'm not even positive that's where they lived, but Aunt Velma's daughters found this info somewhere. Here's the Busby children that are listed as born in KY: 5. Susan Elizabeth b: 31 Mar 1853 KY d: abt 1932-IN 6. Amy? (not certain) b: abt 1856 KY 7. Julia (unknown birthdate--died young) KY 8. Gabriella b: abt 1859 KY (called "Aunt Gabe") 9. David Taylor b: 3 Aug 1861 KY d: 23 Dec 1951-IN 10. Anne (or Anna) E. b: abt 1862 KY James and Eliza supposedly had 12 children, and I'm not sure that one was named Amy. I'm fairly sure of the rest, although I don't know Julia's birth or death date. If this information sounds familiar to anyone please let me know. We cannot find any information before James and Eliza. Thanks. Carolyn
Hello, Can anyone tell me if this information given to me may possibly true as to the definition, etc. Thanks, Lea Simitz Buzby I have read somewhere the Buzby name derived from Hungary.I believe the name means bear(Hungarian),hence the headgear the English guards wear are called buzby's,made of bearskin. -
Merry Christmas Bill Busby, you have the same name as my Grandpa Bill. His given name was William Alvin Busby. A barber from Greene Co. Indiana. Loved his rabbit dogs and was not very tall. Probably 5'9" and like most barbers, he was bald on top. Lonna, Sorry to say we do not connect. My Balaam Buzbee\Busby starts in 1790 SC. Moved thence to Campbell Co. KY, then to Schuyler Co. IL, then to Jefferson Co. KS.. All early records (deeds, marriages & wills) the spelling is Buzbee, with a few Busbee's thrown in. Patrick H.
