According to the powers to be, this virus is not infecting the list. It is generated by your own computer. I just finished running mine through a virus checker and came out clean. I am hoping this one is not like the last one Happy99 which I received everyday just about. Just want to let you guys know that the list itself is not infected and it is safe to recieve and post to it. Barbie PS: Might be a good idea to check your computers. 8*) At 05:00 PM 1/21/00 -0600, you wrote: >-----Original Message----- >From: Lonna Poland <lonna@granbury.com> >To: BUSBY-L@rootsweb.com <BUSBY-L@rootsweb.com> >Date: Friday, January 21, 2000 12:55 PM >Subject: Re: Exe files > > > >Yes, I got hit with this one too. I just received an email with the Happy 99 but not as attachment just a lot of weird things like xgaslkdjhdasklFH'udr[ 39er813erlkn.asercb[ 239048]1-348 ] wuj c go 2yidworur0t=====\\\\\\\\=40=- 2340=-2304-2304-23dgjkfdka io so does this mean I now have the virus in my computer? Joyce
Don't beat yourself up about it. Those of us who have been around a long time, are always leery of any files that end in .exe. My rule of thumb is: If I am not absolutely sure of the sender, I don't open it or forward it on. There are some crafty people who get their kicks by causing others problems. The one that I got was attached to an email subject header that I had sent a couple of weeks back. It appeared harmless. I just deleted it without opening it. Guess it keeps us on our toes :) Love to all Carolyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy B. Check it out ! Dear all, It looks like someone on the list has a virus. This is a typical message from one of recent 'Email' viruses which works a bit like this (I'm not at work so I can't tell you the exact details)- or it's name. Someone receives an email with content as described in Lonna's message, and unlike Lonna they click on the attachment. This triggers the virus which Picks an address randomly from the users incoming email Picks the subject line from that message Sends emails carrying the above text and an attachment (with a name selected from a list of about 20) using the address 'Stolen' from the incoming mail and the subject line - plus the word 'Amended' (or similar) To Everyone on the users address list. So The message appears to come from a recognised source, with a believable subject line. This virus (afaik) only affects contributors to the Gates fortune - mainly Outlook Express & possibly Outlook '98 Rootsweb - as you all know - does not distribute attachments, so you can rest easy knowing that it has not come from the list. Hope this clarifies things Regards from the UK Dave (Occasional Computer Whiz) Rossiter
Hi Glenn, Which Buzbee line in Coosa Co. are you related to? My husband's line goes back to Mary Buzbee who married Aaron Carlton, who later moved to Arkansas. Mary died in Arkansas and Aaron went on to Oklahoma. Mary's father was Jeremiah, son of Jacob, I think, (without looking). Is there a connection here? I don't remember you posting before but then I have been on again off again. Will be glad to share any information I have. LaJuana Knott

All said and done. RootWeb is fixing the problem, we are not the only list hit. This guy was good and I do mean good. For those of you who are new, I am the old warhorse who runs this list but only the techie stuff. This list is for you to make contact with cousins, relatives, complain, moan and groan. We try to keep it to research only, if you want to pass the time with each other, please take it private. How many times you went to the bathroom and the like is just a bit more than I want to know and I am sure there are other who feel the same way. I am here to help you in any way I can, this is your list, and I only have one thing that really will get me going and that is flaming and being a horse's petunia. If you must be this way, please take it private, otherwise I step in and I am, sorry to say, not going to be a nice person. For those of you who have wondered where I have been these last two months, my health has not been the greatest and I just returned Wednesday home from having surgery. Nothing serious and life threatening, just a pain. I will be having it done one more time in the near future, but that is iffy. I am going to try to catch up with everything and see if I can't get back on track. Later Barbie (the grump today 8*) )
I don't think you understood the scope of the problem. I have been in contact with Barbie and she understands the problem. I did not intend to offend. There are a lot of virus' that are sent in emails. The one I was referring to was sent to rootsweb as an executable file. That is a BIG No No! You should stop to consider that there a lot of people out there who prey on the less experienced pc users. This is one of the best sites I have found for Busby research. We are all responsible for making sure that the information is appropriate for the site! Jokes and poems and any other material which is not "relative", should be left to other sites. Barbie knows that I was not bashing her or the site. Just the facts mam :) ----- Original Message ----- From: <DGuil39665@aol.com> To: <BUSBY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 21, 2000 9:21 AM Subject: Re: exe files > I can not belive the words CJ wrote. I'm try to locate information on my grandfather's parents. My grandfather is James Monroe Busbee, born in 1895, Alabama. His father, Pinkney Busbee, was born 1868 in Georgia. Pinkey married Martha (Mattie) J. Turner, born 1872 in Georgia. I believe Pinkey and Martha settled somewhere in or near Wood County, Texas. The only information I have beyond this point is that Pinkney's parents were born in South Carolina and Martha's parents were born in Georgia. Some of the other children of Pinkney and Martha were Joseph C., John P., Floyd D., Liddie, Estelle, Noreen, Clara Mae, Lawrence. Any help would be appreciated. Donna
Did anyone else receive an email with the following header: From: BUSBY-L@rootsweb.com=20 > To: earle@ncci.net=20 > Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2000 8:34 PM > Subject: James Busby from Kentucky (Revised) I didn't as of yet. We have been getting spammed the last couple of days real bad and as far as I can see none of it had made any of the list but they do come to me showing that Rootsweb's filters had caught them. I am going to foward it on to the powers to be, in the meantime if any of you have received it please let me know so they can fix it. Barbie
Guys my email address is attached to every email you get from the list. If you have a problem or need help just click on the email address and it will get to me. This is the first mailbox I check every morning come rain or shine. I keep a copy of every email that comes across unless it is chatter. And if I don't have the answer, I'll try my darnest to find the answer. Barbie
CJ - want to fill me in on what has been happening to you. I do not seem to recall an exe file coming across the list. I double checked my Busby box and found nothing there.
