I enjoyed your genealogy lesson....that is why I'm trying to ask others if they have certain proof to connect certain people I "think" may be the parents of a definite ancestor :) A quick question.... I have an elusive gr grandfather in another part of my family line. I know his name because other family members knew it, and the approximate area they lived, but he died just before or just after my grandfather was born and the boy's mother remarried. Then she died and the step father remarried. To complicate things they moved from Indiana to Illinois; this all happened between censuses and the surname spelling was changed in this generation. I'm up a creek without a paddle! I know the date and place my grandfather was born, but there were no birth certificates in Indiana at this time (1871). There is no family Bible, only the names and dates as older family members recall. If you can give me some advice and post it to the list....I'm sure we all could benefit. If I can't get my grandfather's birth certificate, how can I prove his parent's names and get dates for them? I have his death certificate and parent's names from that, but it's only names. No one knew where they were born to fill it in properly. It's actually easier to get birth dates in Britain because they all recorded things in parish churches and the LDS recorded much on microfilm. Researching in the U.S. can be much more difficult - either that or I just don't have the hang of it :) Any help and advice would be appreciated :) Lonna Searching for: FURLONG, MAISE, RAMSEY, BUSBY, POLAND, PENN, KENNA, MORBY, NEALE My Genealogy: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lpoland Furlongs of Pembrokeshire, Wales: http://members.xoom.com/furlongs Lonna's House (Christian site): http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4299 Lightning Web Designs: http://www.lightningwebdesigns.com
Hi Howard, This is your 2 e-mails in one!! First, do you have an abstract (typed in computer)of the will that you could send to me, please?? Second-I checked the marriage index for Mobile County and I see a Simeon Wheeler married a Rebecca Maples on July 16, 1850 (Book 11;Page 74). The following was gleaned from newspaper articles in the Mobile Register (circa 1890-1905), and other documents/sources. Wheelerville, Alabama Simian (Simeon) Wheeler established the legal precinct of Wheelerville in 1828. Wheelerville ran west on Old Shell Road/Tanner-Williams Road from what is now the University of South Alabama to the vicinity of Big Creek Lake reservoir. It soon gained the the reputation of "the murder capital of Alabama." In the late 1830s, a teen-age outlaw, James Copeland, born near Pascagoula, Mississippi in 1823, joined the wages Clan, dominated by Gale Wages and Charles McGrath. The clan used Wheelerville as one of its staging areas, and from there "spread terror through a wide area of the middle Gulf Coast in general and Mobile in particular." In 1839, Copeland and his associates, with key members employed as Mobile city guards, started a fire in the Mobile shopping district, looted most of the stores and burned down the entire downtown business area. Copeland went on to form his own gang and engaged in the robbery of slaves, livestock and even flatboats, accompanied by numerous shootings and murders until his arrest in the vicinity of Mobile in 1849. After four years in the Alabama Penitentiary, he was released, only to be arrested by Mississippi authorities. He was tired and convicted of murder. On October 30, 1857, the 34-year-old outlaw was hanged in Augusta, Mississippi. His body was not claimed, so he was buried in a pauper's grave in Perry county, Miss. Three days later his body was secretly dug up and disappeared. A story (undocumented oral tradition) has persisted for more than 140 years in the Wheelerville community that Copeland's remains were brought back and buried in the old Wheelerville cemetery (now New Hope Gardens) in the heart of the area that was the rendezvous and hideout for his clan. The woods near the New Hope gardens cemetery were the headquarters of the Copeland gang. A list of the Copeland and Wages clan was given in 1857 by Copeland to Mississippi sheriff J.R.S. Pitts, who recorded it in his 1858 book, The Life and Confession of the Noted Outlaw James Copeland. On January 7, 1875, Thomas Fincher, a deputy sheriff who had a warrant for his arrest on a charge of forgery, shot John E. Allen. A posse was collected and at Fincher's home when Allen walked into the room with a musket on his shoulder, and defied them to arrest him. Fincher closed with him and took the gun away. Allen seized another gun and turned to fire. Fincher fired at Allen hitting him in the left side, killing him. The body was brought in and placed in the jail by Fincher, who gave himself up to wait the result of the inquest. In 1868, Tom Fincher assassinated Simon Wheeler. This started the beginning of the feud and "general acceptance of the doctrine of vengeance by the old families of Wheelerville." Wheelerville, according to a 1905 Mobile Register article, is famed as the only feud center in Alabama. Fincher was convicted, but after a series of appeals and reversals, the case was dropped by the State. Fincher, supposedly, went on to murder again, but was later shot from ambush and the killer was never discovered. Both Wheeler and Fincher are buried in the Wheelerville cemetery, which, before 1828, was known as Mount Mariah. "Jabe, Thanks. This is some kind of proof for me. Now, how about Elizabeth's parents? Was she related to Simeon Wheeler, the purported founder of Wheelerville? Hi there, I have a reference to A William Henry Busby (b. 1805), son of unknown and Zachariah Busby (b.1768). Zachariah was son of Benjamin Busby (b.1699, d.1815) and Susannah. There is some doubt/wonder about whether Zachariah was son of Benjamin due to the age of Benjamin at Zachariah's birth. I have a lot of Busby information from the Mobile, AL/ Miss area. Likely, there is no connection, but your ggf story sounds like mine. Mine was Algernon Wilkins Buzby, born in PA 1869, but no birth cert. He died in 1905, five years after his son (my gf) Jason Buzby was born in Phila. He also had another son in 1902, named Dudley, but wife Elizabeth thought someone else might be the father. At any rate, as a widow, she remarried a Mr. Petrie, and moved to Indiana-I guess he, being a military man, was stationed there or something. They had a son named Bliss, and some one of them moved to TX. Oh, to find living ancestors! Melanye Buzby Winterbottom

I have been observing the postings real close. While the older members know to post their source a lot of the newer members don't. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with speculation but if you are going to post the data as your direct line, you also need to include the source of the data that proves it. Unless the source is posted, it is mere speculation and guess work. If you don't want to do that much typing then put at bottom sources available on request. Never accept what you pick up on a list as the gospel, always prove it out by obtaining a photocopy or printout of the document or the document its self. It will sure cut down on the wild goose chases and hitting dead ends. "Twinkles" email address may be a source but not documentation that proves the line. And in order to claim direct descent you must prove the line with birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates, bible records, wills and etc. (letters, announcements, census, directories) In the future, a lot of you will want to join a group like DAR or the like, and without this documentation you will be rejected. Or you may want to write a book, no documentation means no sales. So please include your source so that others may obtain the documents necessary to prove the line. Class over. 8*) Barbie
