I am Bret Busby. The Busby Y-DNA Project web page is at http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Busby . That web page, at the time of my writing this message, includes information about the project, and about the applicable tests, including the costs and procedure. The submission and analysis of DNA samples for determining the probability of linkage to Busby male lines (the Y-DNA analysis) is generally useful for only males with the Busby family name, who, in their genealogical research, show an unbroken male Busby line (eg, my family name is Busby, my father's family name is Busby, my father's father's family name is Busby, my father's father's father's family name is Busby, and so on), as far back as the research records go. In the preceding paragraph, where I have used the name Busby, it is inclusive of its spelling variants (Buzby, Busbee, Bushby, Busbice, etc). As the signature in the message above "No truth without proof", refers to a need for absolute evidence, I remind everyone, including the enquirer, that DNA analysis is probabilistic, and not absolute - it results in a determination of only the probability of a relationship, not absolute proof of a definite relationship. How people interpret the probability, is up to the individual. The Y-DNA analysis, as used in the Busby name Y-DNA Project, is a useful assistance, but is not as absolute as written records, such as those found in Parish Registers, and the records of Births, Deaths and Marriages. I hope that this information is helpful. -- Bret Busby Armadale West Australia .............. 2. Hi Cousin Terri, I have seen info re Zachariah and I remember that he was a descendant of Benjamin Buzbee (Busby) but I have displaced a lot of records since I resigned as coordinator of the Busby Y DNA project. However, the new coordinator for the project is Bret Busby. He can be reached by email on _-Busby@rootsweb.com_ (mailto:-Busby@rootsweb.com) . or _bret@busby.net_ (mailto:bret@busby.net) He may be able to help you. It is said he is the son of Benjamin Busby born 1699 in Maryland and wife Susannah (????) - however that would have made Ben 69 when he fathered him. Although I do not have a date for her birth I have seen some say she was born 1750. But if that is the case, then the 6 other brothers had to have been from another woman...... I was told you are the authority since you have done so much research. Any ideas here?? Thank you. Terri

    3. There is one line of Busby/Busbee/Busbice... whose paternal Y-DNA results are an EXACT match to those of one line of Ivey/Ivie/Ivy. The Haplogroup is E1b1a indicating an African ancestry, probably in the mid to late 1600s in Virginia/Maryland. Some of the Ivey/Ivie/Ivys in early Virginia were active in the slave trade. 1. [BUSBY] Can Anyone Connect These Two Jones Men or The Following Surnames?
    2. TOM F DUNKLIN
    3. I really need input on the following as my head is spinning: Wilson Jones, born ca 1788 VA; died ca 1869 Lincoln Co KY and Levi Jones, born ca 1786 (maybe in Bedford Co VA); died ca 1863 Adair Co KY. Any connection between the two? I've got Jones; Winfrey; Drake; Hill; Atkinson; and Banks families that I think all have some kind of connection down thru the 1700-1800's from VA to KY. Areas seem to be Adair Co KY and Lincoln Co KY. Right now the names are coming fast and furious in my Busby line but I can't straighten them out. Appears that Phillip Winfrey/Martha Northcutt's son, Elisha T. was married to a Sarah "Sally" Drake. Elisha T died ca 1817 and according to Adair Co marriage records, she married Matthew Busby in 1821 Adair Co. Wasn't Sarah "Sally" Drake Winfrey the d/o Joel Drake & Amey Hall? Was the Annie Winfrey who married Levi Jones also d/o Phillip & Martha? Then you have the 2 daughters of Elisha T. Winfrey & Sarah "Sally" Drake, Caroline & Nancy Winfrey, who seemed to have married 2 Jones brothers, Green William & Phillip F Jones. Any connection to Wilson or Levi? To confuse things more, my Matthew had a daughter by 3rd wife, Mary Polly Fair named Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Busby and she married a Major Samuel Jones. The lived in Lincoln Co KY. One of their daughters, Nancy Belle Jones, married Winfred Bailey Hill.  Any Hill connection to the daughter of William Atkinson's daughter, Frances Hill Atkinson? Then I have a Banks-Atkinson connection when William C Atkinson & Sally Drake Hill's daughter, Frances Hill Atkinson married James Austin Banks. James was s/o Jacob Banks and Rebecca Davis. Jacob was the s/o Vandiver Banks and Elizabeth Wolford. I'm swimming in surnames that probably have a connection, some probably close and some probably distant, and I can't get my head around it all. Would love to hear from those who can furnish me family info on these surnames that will help put this all together. Paula

    2. TOM F DUNKLIN
    3. Carolyn, I agree with you.  Around 1850, some of Mary Margaret's aunt/uncles went into Carroll Co MO, Washington Co KY, Lincoln Co KY, as well as Texas. Family lore has always said that my Matthew Busby's parents were John Busby and Margaret Patterson of Hampshire Co VA but there is no documented proof. This is my biggest brick wall and it may never be knocked down unless someone can help. My Matthew was born ca 1770-1780, unknown where. Parents/siblings, unknown. First known fact is that he married Saluda Tinsley of Amherst Co VA in 1803. Around 1815 or so, Matthew moved his family to KY and settled on or near the Green River in Adair Co. He died ca 1843 in KY. He was married 3 times.....first to Saluda Tinsley; in 1821 to Sarah "Sally" Drake Winfrey (widow of Elisha Winfrey) and 3rd to Mary "Polly" Fair of Lincoln Co KY. His children were as follows: Milton, born ca 1804 born VA Tilford, born ca 1805 "  VA David T, born 1807  "    VA (daughter, Margaret Jane Busby Price of Falls Co TX always told that her gparents were John & Margaret Busby..but no proof) Paulina born 1812   " VA or KY Nancy T born 1815  " KY Matilda born " ca 1817  KY Edward born 1818   KY There may have been a son named William D. Busby from this marriage; born ca 1821. Saluda died sometime around this time frame. If Saluda is not William's mother, then Matthew's 2nd wife, Sarah Drake, was William's mother. There also may have been a daughter born to Matthew & Sarah; name Permelia. This has not been proven. 3rd marriage to Mary "Polly" Fair produced a daughter, born in 1843, named Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Busby. This is proven. Matthew died about this time.  Matthew's children married into the following families: Graves Thomas Hardwick Sweeney Tucker Drake Banks Hall.....Winfrey Jones Like you, I think a lot of KY and MO Busbys are related and would love to hear from anyone who might connect to any of the above people. 3. Hi, Cindy. I'm not sure who owns the cemetery. The land was donated back in the 1800's for that use and I know that people who have family buried there can be buried there without having to purchase a plot. Or, at least it was that way when I was growing up. Unless things have changed, there was no charge for keeping the graves nice or mowing, but, I guess that could have changed, as well. Your suggestion sounds "right on" and makes sense to me. I never thought about it, but I guess someone/some organization has to pay taxes on it. Sadly, back then a lot of people didn't keep good records and I've been told that many times the family just took their loved ones to the cemetery, dug a hole and buried them. So....makes things harder to solve but the court house would be a good place to start. Next time I go home, I'll have to make a trip to the Courthouse and see what I can find. Thanks so much for the thoughts. 3. Mary Margaret Banks Manning was the d/o Matilda Busby Banks and Martin W Banks of Adair Co KY. She came to Freestone Co TX with her mother and her Uncles ca 1850 after Martin Bank's death ca 1843.  While in KY, Matilda & Mary Margaret lived in the home of Matilda's brother, Milton Busby. Another of Matilda's brothers, David T. Busby, also left KY ca 1850 and settled in Freestone Co, TX.  David T Busby later moved to Falls Co TX. His wife had also died earlier, in KY. In 1851, he married Sarah L Gray Seeley, widow of Dr. David Seeley in Falls Co TX. David T purchased land there and some of the descendants still live on that land today. Mary Margaret married Reuben Manning, JR in 1855. She was only 13 yrs old but family story is that after her mother married a 2nd time, she wouldn't live in the home of her new step-father. Reuben & Mary Margaret lived in Freestone Co TX all of their lives. Reuben died in Freestone Co in 1900 and Mary Margaret died ca 1919. I've never been able to find an exact date of death for her. They are both buried in Cotton Gin Cemetery just outside Teague, Freestone Co, TX. However, their graves were unmarked due to finances, and sometime in the early 1960's, a headstone for a Samuel N Archibald was placed where all of my relatives say Reuben & Mary Margaret were buried. We've never been able to find who ordered this stone or how to prove this is my Manning's gravesite. My uncle, who was born in 1909, told me he remembered going to his grandmother's funeral and burial at Cotton Gin and that he knew the Archibald headstone was placed in the wrong spot. He died in 2003 and died saying that the headstone was wrong. I've tried to find out who ordered the stone and what company placed it there, but have had no luck in solving this mystery. To make matters more difficult, Samuel N Archibald lived at one time in Reuben Manning's home; so there was some kind of connection there. Archibald has family in a cemetery a couple of miles down the road from Cotton Gin Cemetery, and I believe that he is really buried there and the stone should have been erected there, not Cotton Gin. But, again, no proof. If I could prove this and get his stone moved to the correct burial site, then I could get a CSA marker put up for Reuben as he served in that war. If anyone has any information on any of the people mentioned in this post, please contact me. I have lots more Busby info to share. Paula
